Halloween Kills: Jamie Lee Curtis, David Gordon Green, Jason Blum on the Sequel

With Halloween Kills opening in theaters this weekend and also streaming for free on Peacock, the other day I got to speak with Jamie Lee Curtis, director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum about making the sequel. During the interview, they talked about what fans would be surprised to learn about the making of Halloween Kills, why shooting the film was an out of body experience for Green, how they all really get along, the massive ambition of the sequel, what it’s really like shooting nights for two months, how they never lie to each other, and more. In addition, Curtis talks about why Laurie Strode would have been happy to have died killing Michael Myers and protecting her family, and her approach to playing the “he’s still not dead” moment in this sequel.
In the sequel, which starts right as the last film ends, we are back in the town of Haddonfield and dealing with the aftermath of the events of 2018's Halloween, which saw Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer), and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) narrowly escaping the clutches of Michael Myers. As they are rushing to the hospital to get Laurie Strode medical treatment, the fire department is rushing to her home to put out the blaze, which leads them to unintentionally set Myers free to continue his rampage. As you can imagine, chaos ensues, and Myers shows no mercy to the people he encounters. Moreover, Halloween Kills brings back several more characters from the iconic franchise - Anthony Michael Hall plays a grown-up Tommy Doyle, and Kyle Richards will reprise her role as Lindsey Wallace from the 1978 film. Nancy Stephens also returns to the franchise as Marion Chambers, former assistant to Dr. Loomis.
Watch what Jamie Lee Curtis, David Gordon Green and Jason Blum had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about followed by the official synopsis. Finally, this was my first in person interview since COVID began and it's so nice to actually talk to people face to face and not on Zoom.
Jamie Lee Curtis, David Gordon Green and Jason Blum
For Jamie Lee Curtis: She has defeated or “killed” Michael Myers a few times in this franchise, how has she had to reevaluate how to play that moment and evolve the character approach to make them unique and how was the approach to the “he’s still not dead” moment in this sequel different?
How everyone gets to have a horror film acting moment.
What would surprise fans to learn about the making of Halloween Kills?
The massive ambition of the sequel.
Curtis on how they have never lied to each other.
Here's the official synopsis:
Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.

I love to see that Jamie still has passion for this character. She was such a beautiful young woman and is now aging gracefully. Loved her in the 2018 movie, looking forward to 10/15!

Enjoyed this film a lot. Probably more then the 2018 version. Both are good films however the 2018 felt more like a thriller with horror elements while this one was more horror. David Gordon Green makes good films and it’s cool that we are getting a Halloween trilogy. Can’t wait for the next one. Let’s hope one day a Friday the 13th or nightmare on elm street project will go into development and have a resurgence of the slasher genre.

I'm sure there will be a new Friday The 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movie coming in the future. However, the resurgence of the slasher genre happened with and after Halloween (2018). It became the most successful slasher movie of all time and made Halloween the biggest slasher franchise in the world. It spawned a trilogy of films. After the two movies, we've got a new Candyman, Scream and Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Aswell as a Child's Play tv-series and two Hellraiser projects. Halloween has redefined an era few times now.

I’m so glad this team put together these films. It was done perfect. The tone, the performances and the score are perfect. If John Carpenter himself has given his approval for it then you know it’s good. And not in that fake publicity or press kind of way like Stephen King has with some of the films made from his novels which he had to know weren’t good.

I see so many people trashing the monologue scene at the end. But why!? That scene is gorgeous; all the shots of Michael, beautifully shot. The music, Jamie's delivery. Like Job Bob Briggs said, "what not to love about this movie?" Easily the best Halloween sequel IMO, watched it 5 times already and seeing it in the theater a 3rd time tonight.
