David Gordon Green on Halloween Kills, the Ending, and Halloween Ends

With Halloween Kills now playing in theaters and streaming for free on Peacock, I recently spoke to director David Gordon Green about the making of the sequel. During the wide-ranging interview, he talked about how he made a bet on the set of the first Halloween that if the film made one hundred million dollars he would get his first tattoo (which he shows on camera), if Kenny Powers could take down Michael Myers, why shooting all nights makes it a difficult shoot, if he had any battles with the MPAA over the brutal kill scenes, how they had to restage a sequence on a soundstage and it turned into one of his favorite sequences in the film, the ending, how the Blu-ray will have an extended cut, who gets to keep the mask, and more. In addition, Green talked about the final chapter in his trilogy, Halloween Ends, the status of the script, when the film takes place, how they’re going to start shooting in January, and more.
In Halloween Kills, which starts right as the last film ends, we are back in the town of Haddonfield and dealing with the aftermath of the events of 2018's Halloween, which saw Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer), and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) narrowly escaping the clutches of Michael Myers. As they are rushing to the hospital to get Laurie Strode medical treatment, the fire department is rushing to her home to put out the blaze, which leads them to unintentionally set Myers free to continue his rampage. As you can imagine, chaos ensues, and Myers shows no mercy to the people he encounters. Moreover, Halloween Kills brings back several more characters from the iconic franchise - Anthony Michael Hall plays a grown-up Tommy Doyle, and Kyle Richards will reprise her role as Lindsey Wallace from the 1978 film. Nancy Stephens also returns to the franchise as Marion Chambers, former assistant to Dr. Loomis.

But watch when Ends come out alot of these people saying they hate it, will love it (beside the corny dialouge that'll never get better with age hahah)

I've listened to a few people complain about this movie... Maybe I'm biased to the Halloween movies but I really was intrigued. Was it gory, yes. Some of the dialog was redundant (Evil dies tonight🤦🏻‍♂️) but let's face the facts. It technically is the 12th installment of a 40 year plus franchise. The original was released six years after the Godfather for Christs sake! I was pretty impressed! The flashbacks to the original, Dr. Loomis reincorporated into it, the simple fact that Michael is a very dark presence that disturbs people who can't fathom the idea of a mind thinking so heinous.....For a prelude to the final conclusion....I give it a thumbs up....but that's just me

I like HALLOWEEN 2018 better than HALLOWEEN KILLS. The reason is that in KILLS, the community beats the CRAP out of MICHAEL MYERS, leaving him for dead; however, he comes back to life, and somehow, without being seen, gets into his house and kills LAURIE STRODER's daughter. Can anyone explains that? Can anyone explains that?

For me him being seemingly unkillable makes him less scary (and, ultimately, degrades the film) ... I feel like that aspect was way overdone in this movie and because of that I like this one less than the 2018 entry. I hope Ends is an improvement over this one.

@@jankmedia1985 I'm not necessarily "surprised" but quite disappointed. Especially since DGG has explicitly stated that Michael IS human. But you wouldn't know it by the damage he took and bounced back from. That really took me out off it and I just felt like it was regressing into the same sort of silliness that went on in several of the other Halloween movies (and slasheer films in general). The reason the original '78 and 2018 versions were so good is because that sort of stuff was minimizeed, thereby making the final product work very well, as opposed to Kills. Which I did drewatch last night (in preparation for a livestream I'm doing tonight about it) and my feeling didn't improve. If anything, it got worse.

Ya their was some bad dialogue, and the way most of the legacy characters went out was kinda weak, but all of that got overshadowed for me with how cool this movie actually was to watch from start to finish😁 I came out of it thinking I like it more than 2018, but 2018 is a special film to me since it was my first Halloween movie I ever saw in theaters, plus it reinvigorated the Boogeyman for a new generation. So for that reason I personally like 2018 more, but Kills is one hell of a movie. Some of the best Michael Myers moments ever, it’s a bloody good time🤘🏻

In fact, everything I wanted from the 2018 movie that I didn't get, I got in H. Kills. The only way H18 is better than H. Kills is in its pacing. What really irks me is that most people who are complaining about H. Kills love H20, which is one of my least favorite movies in the franchise. I'm hoping that's the case for the daughter because she was a beast! Loved the movie and thought the flash backs from 1978 were a brilliant edition to the film. We now know that the mask and Michael have some type of mystical bond and also his inner peace he finds from standing in Judith's window. The whole movie was geared towards the town hunting down and killing Michael yet and still, they had no answers for him. I liked the station wagon from the first Halloween movie parked in the back ground from the scene where the kid falls when Micheal walks up on him in the beginning. Dr. Loomis surprised us all with his appearance and they did a great job with the character that played him! That was on point right there

When she is found, she's bloodied up, and I have no idea what went down. Did Michael find her? Then there's the scene with the car. Vanessa just disappears while all the action is going down, before she returns and attempts to shoot Michael. How were some of these inconsistencies missed? I just don't get it.

I will say if you have read the script that is floating around the internet, the “extended ending” (which is really just the original ending) is absolutely jaw-dropping and although I totally trust this team when they say that it would have been inappropriate for the momentum that they wanted to create going into the third movie I do think the decision maybe did result in an ending that wasn’t as good as it could have been. But I’m hoping the end result is that the trilogy as a whole benefits from this slightly changed direction.

Hello Halloween Fans, I just finished watching Halloween Kills for the second time, and this question should be in all of the fans minds....At the end of the movie when Michael kills several people when they tried to trap him, a few blocks away from his childhood home, there is a scene where the Police, EMT's, Allyson, and Karen all were consoling each other on the porch, of Michael's childhood home, and Karen decides to walk inside the house, and up the stairs and look out of Michael's sisters room - Question - How the hell did Michael go from two blocks and killing several people, to up the stairs of his house (assuming the front door was the only entry to the second floor since built in the 60's), and be in the same room where Karen was standing looking out the window, with sirens and others still outside, and kill her??? And also with Karen screaming, nobody heard her?? Seems like an illusion or Karen just imagined this, why would Michael risk getting caught in his house when the Police were just outside on his lawn. Karen did close her eyes for a moment then opened, then was stabbed by Michael, could she have been dreaming, or was this real?? David Gordan Green - Please explain this to the fans. Thank you. (Looking forward to the Ends movie later this year)

I think Halloween kills is a really good film. Seems to be a lot of negative opinion among film critics. I think they could’ve shaved 10 mins from the middle. The hospital scene was a bit too long but it was a good film looking forward to Halloween ends now. Although it’ll be sad if they actually kill Micheal for good as we won’t get anymore lol

God I loved 2018 and Kills. I heard David Gordon Green say Ends will deal with the pandemic. David, no. Please no. Keep politics and covid out of my goddamn Halloween movie. That said, incredible job thus far, and again, don't even think of writing the words pandemic or covid in the script for Ends. I swear I'll slap somebody. Edit: We've all dealt with covid enough the past 2 years. Let's keep it out of Halloween Ends, shall we?

Well, he pretty much says Myers dies in this last upcoming installment. If he dies, then the character should be left alone and not do another timeline or even pick up from another timeline. It just wouldn't feel like a Halloween movie anymore if he gets killed in Halloween Ends and they picked of from a different timeline or started a new one. Leave the franchise alone if he dies in Ends.

My theory on this whole Halloween saga is that Michael is superhuman. It has nothing to do with his mask and the Shamrock thing. Maybe Judith Myers was playing with an Oujia board and open a gateway for a demon to enter the house and jump into little Michael Myers. Then behold we have a superhuman serial killer.

I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece. Though better than all the other previous films (excluding 2018, 1,2, and 4. So this one ranks 5-6 of all the Halloweens. Where I feel they went south on this one was the Hospital scenes, to unrealistic of events, the chasing of that other inmate which didn’t do anything for the story, some of the dialogue (all the talk of evil, etc, are lines you’d hear Loomis say, but there’s no Loomis. So they just ended up coming out corny), too many previous characters brought back from the original (for example, what was the point of having Nurse Marion come back only to just be slaughtered almost right away), Allyson never told anyone about that the reason Laurie and Michael ended up meeting each other again was because of Sartain, not because he was after her) which would’ve ended that debate. Should’ve focused more on Allyson, and a few other nitpicks. Not a bad film, but not great either. The kills, the first 20 minutes or so, the last 15-20 minutes, the score, and some other bits are what saved it, if at all.

I really enjoyed this interview and I’m very appreciative that we are getting Halloween films with Jamie Lee Curtis in them but I have to say, even though I was so super excited about this movie I never thought I’d be so on the fence with it. Hear me out… For me, Anthony Michael Hall is utterly horrendous in this movie.🤦‍♀️ I watched it multiple times now and it’s so much more enjoyable AFTER I fast forwarded through the way too long Tommy speech at the silly bar with the puppet and ventriloquist.🙄 Such insufferable dialogue.🤦‍♀️ That long, dragged out hospital mixup could have been time given to a Lindsey & Laurie scene at the hospital and a Laurie & Sheriff Bracket scene when she woke up after surgery. Powerful moments that could have been.🤦 There needed to be much more screen time for Lindsey & Marion. Why did it have to be them at a silly bar? Why couldn’t we see each of them in their homes watching the news and then they each rush to the hospital?🤦‍♀️ Was a second fight between Lindsey & Michael cut from the film? I can’t figure out why she was in such worse shape and down near the bridge when they found her. Something is missing. Tommy’s line to Lonnie outside about Laurie “I’m glad she survived “. This is supposed to be Tommy & Laurie. That delivery by him was absolutely awful.🤦‍♀️ HATED what Frank said to Laurie, “it’s not about you”. Am I the only one who remembers Halloween 1978? She saw him stalk her all day. He then killed her friends and put them on display for her. He then repeatedly attacked her. That’s all she knows and has ever been aware of. How could she not always believe that it’s about her? I HATE that line!🤦‍♂️ As for Halloween ENDS, they have until January to whip up half way decent dialogue. I hope they use these next few months wisely.

Was excited to see the follow-up to 2018 film this one felt like a whole new team was working on it though the dialog was absolute trash. The tone went from serious in previous film to feeling like I was watching a cartoon with Elmer Fudd running around screaming "evil dies tonight" in this one. It sucks that Karen died at the end because I was really looking forward to her saying "Gotcha" when she tricks Michael again like last 2 films 🙄. Long story short I hated it and I'm upset that I did because I had such high expectations. It was like getting the opportunity to go down on Scarlett Johansson just to find out that she wipes from back-to-front I'm still gonna eat it I'm just not gonna rush to tell my friends

I hope Laurie doesn't become the default lead after this trilogy, without JLC the character is practically worthless and we could really use A. a break from the constant presence of the character (every damn film for 20+ years and rarely with anything new to do) B. a movie that balances the dual protagonists out a bit again with Loomis (plus he really is important to Myers' character and the series' core). Frankly, even if Ends is amazing, I don't want people to continue this timeline - almost every interesting part in it is used up by the end of Kills and more will follow in Ends.
