Like for example, Black Heritage organization, Hispanic, and or Asian organizations are all usually considered appropriate and celebrated. But White heritage and organization has a significantly deep association with oppression and racism (like nazi, kkk, and slave owners etc) that it’s looked down upon. (except if it’s european heritage that’s usually not associated in that category). Black Pride Hispanic Pride LGBTQ Pride Asian Pride Are all considered good but when someone says “White Pride” it’ll automatically be associated with the groups I mentioned before. Not all white people have negative intentions with that, but majority who are “white pride” certainly do, and it’s case like this, and most what republicans and anglo-saxon christians do in media to further prove that point. Yes it sucks, but it is what it is. It’ll be extremely hard to change that narrative.

I’m not a fan of Disney’s attitude. The main intention of the race swap was obviously to provoke this anger. It’s petty and childish and makes them partly responsible for the harassment Halle Bailey is getting. That being said, letting yourself be provoked and going after the actress or even the company is just as petty and not ok at all, especially once racism gets involved. I do think that having non-white disney princesses is a good idea, because you have all the little children growing up liking the disney princesses, but there are almost none that are "like them" (i dont really know what to put for that). Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana, Moana, Raya, Jasmine, Mirabel. It's not always about race, it's about diversity in culture too. Ariel was from Dutch culture. This recast took that representation from their culture, and also stripped one of the few redheaded princesses from that community too. They could've cast Halle for a live action Princess and the Frog instead. But they had to make a political statement instead.

She’s a wonderful little mermaid and anyone who thinks she isn’t can go straight to you know where.

It’s always really cute seeing kids feel included in movies. I remember seeing videos of kids reacting to Encanto and feeling like they were represented in the movie. It was really wholesome, glad to see it happening again

I love Halle. I’m so excited for the movie

I like the actress she has done good work in what I have seen from her. I wont watch the movie though as I don't like race swaps of any kind and I don't wish to watch any more Disney content as I would rather watch something I would much better enjoy. I like accuracy and immersion in the content I consume. I want the creators to work hard and be purposeful with every detail of the movie or show I decide to watch. As for representation, I wish they just made a black princess instead of following the trend of just taking something or a character and making them black. I will not be satisfied with crumbs an I hate that I keep being called for saying that I want Black stories and characters to not just be an afterthought or for the woke points. While her Danish heritage wasn't focused on and her ancestry isn't widely known. I like to know what is behind stories I enjoy and like to understand the influences on the story and author. I am aware that casual fans of things I really enjoy and know about, are uninformed and uninterested but it is annoying when casuals act as if they have greater knowledge and understanding. Like saying something doesn't matter, why would you not want people to care about the characters and potential inconsistencies? If someone wants to watch the live action movie, then let them watch it how they wish. If you wanna watch a movie in theaters, on streaming, downloaded, on a couch, chair, or bed more power to you. I am perfectly fine with people adjusting the film they watch so that they can better enjoy it. I and many others have used mods for games and plenty of people have a head canon or favorite and that is perfectly fine.

For me it’s not specifically about her being black. If they had made her literally any other race, gender or sexuality, hell, even personality, I would’ve been upset. Also, including black characters in media ADDS representation while making a black character white takes away that representation. thats why people don’t find it that big of a deal because its just adding representation. and her race has no effect on the story whatsoever? I totally understand the people who hate the Disney remakes, they're definitely unnecessary. That being said, there's no way that excuses wishing literal death on someone.

The real issue was never about her skin color, it’s about the fact that Dlsney is being “inclusive” not because they care but because that’s what is making them the most money. That and the fact that if they really cared about being inclusive they would make more ORIGINAL content like Moana and Encanto instead of taking the safe option of piggy backing off of already established stories and turning it into something it originally wasn’t. No actually she was just the better Ariel. They heard her sing and just knew she was the one. Its not like the casting was specifically for black people. It was open to everyone. The director chose her, not disney. And to the comment below… Mulan being Chinese is actually a major factor of the movie… she was also a real historical figure… changing the race of Cinderella wouldnt affect the story… but changing Mulans ethnicity or even Merida’s would.

Its more about changing the character that you are used to. I remember when the Toby Maguier's Spider man came out, people complained that he had blue eyes instead of brown eyes like the original. What is Sci-Fi about Ariel’s story? I’m just curious now. 😂 Actually it depends on what water level they live in. Near the very bottom of the sea, they would probably be translucent. I’m no marine biologist though. Towards the mid level or higher levels, I think their skin tones would reflect what parts of the world they lived in’s climate. Dark skinned in hot, arid places possibly, more pale skinned in cooler climates. This is just for a fun conversation but it would be interesting to see mermaid species evolutions and mutations too from different parts of the world. (One day, I’d love to be a doctor or a biologist though.)

@@tabbycat1980 Neptune & Poseidon are the same person just another name for example Zeus = Jupiter. Greeks called him Zeus while Romans called him Jupiter but names are interchangeable. The Trident 🔱 in movie and myth is a devastating weapon (with no power source) capable of changing society thus a super weapon ….. one person science maybe considered magic to people who don’t understand tech

I haven't seen this movie just yet and I'm a ariel fan for years and years and the problem for some people isn't that shes black the problem is that the memories are what makes the characters shes always been white even in the other versions,it's just the whole race swap like I'm Hispanic light skin but just think about how everyone would feel if they make mulan look Hispanic? no, me being Hispanic I would still be upset of something like that lol I will watch the movie though, nothing but love and respect to the actress and i do hope all the negative energy stops and leave her alone

OMG THE FIXED VERSION IS SO MUCH BETTER

She was an amazing Ariel. People never even gave her a chance to capture her essence. But she did. Makes me sad that someone is sweet as her had to deal with that amount of hate.

I don’t know what world your living in, but black people don’t ONLY complain about lack of original black representation when there’s a race swap. That’s what white people do.

Well if you’re gonna make a live action, then why’d they race swap her? This isn’t something where we have no idea what she looks like, it’s right in front everyone’s face’s yet they decide to race swap. It’s lazy, multibillion dollar companies, are held to high standards, the excuse is from some people, are, “they just wanted to make a black Ariel”, yeah but why, what’s the purpose, you botch the live action when the material that is already there to use. I think it’s hilarious about the reaction of kids seeing a black Ariel, a giant majority of kids don’t care about racial or gender representation, or much less politics. They care about playing with toys, playing video games, watching their favorite tv show or movie, going outside, hanging out with their pets, or friends or family. A majority of them are more than likely rehearsed. A majority of people would rather want an original story, not a lazy race swap of an already made developed character. But overall I agree, no need to boycott the movie, just stop giving Disney money. Stop watching their movies, and they’ll start caring about their entire audience.
