Halifax Then & Now

In today's video we take a look at the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia "Then & Now". I was able to get some old photos from archives and have tried to highlight the old Halifax streets and buildings against todays Halifax. I visit some of the most popular areas of downtown Halifax, Spring Garden Road, Citadel Hill, Barrington Street and more. The photos range from the 1800s to the 1970s, compared with the current look of Halifax in June of 2021. I tried to set the video to music from the period. Hope you enjoy!

The old bus in the picture of the Lord Nelson is amazing to me because I remember still seeing those type of busses, mind you nearing the end of their service lives, growing up there in the late 90s / early 2000s. These old pictures always seem so far away in time but in reality, they weren't that long ago in the grand scheme of things. Incredible video.

Hello from Halifax England. I love looking at our old architecture in our town , most of which is still standing. Good to see you do the same. Be proud of your city. I certainly am.

I enjoyed this, thank you. It's hard to believe how much Halifax has changed in just a few years ! I went to university there in the early/mid 90s and they were the best days of my life. I see now that I'm going to have to make a point to walk around and see all the new sights whenever I get back for a visit.

Was great to see the old photos of the Paramount!! So many people were disappointed about the closing and destruction of that icon. The inside of the theater was amazing, LOVED going to movies there!! As a young rebel, some of us snuck over there at night and stole some of the intact bricks from the demolition for souvenirs. Ha!!

I would say that they moved the monument because it obstructs the view of the gate. The gate is pretty much a highlight of the gardens. A lot of pictures in front of the gate is the normal thing for prom, grad, travelers, weddings, etc.

When Hurricane Juan struck Halifax in 2003, the Public Gardens were hit hard, and during the restoration process it was deemed appropriate to relocate the bust of Walter Scott to a more protected area I believe. Love those B&W pictures...some of which I could have been in...but that would be dating myself for sure :-) Great work on this video...very much appreciated! Take great care now...Bruce and Otis

Hi Scott, this is Joe writing on Theresa’s post.Good job covering the old city, some of the older buildings were magnificent, shame they tore them down to create less attractive new ones.Lots of good memories of my growing up here.I especially loved the paramount theatre,I saw the first Batman movie there.we lined up for three hours, the line snaked down to lower water street. There we’re no capacity limits at the time and we e end ended sitting double seated, the place went nuts.

That building on the corner of Barrington and Sackville used to be a bank. I've forgotten which one but I used to go there to get my mom's paycheques. It's a Durty Nellies upstairs now.

Having lived in Halifax the past 27 years I really appreciate the old photos of many popular well known places. So sad to see the destruction of so many historic buildings that accelerated in the past 5 years or so. Halifax is turning into a Toronto wannabe with too many concrete and glass towers devoid of personality. Along with this mindless transformation, fueled by greed, comes the unaffordable living places that replaced them. Your videos are an art form in itself, Bravo! 👍👍👍🏆

Thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback. I have heard Halifax is becoming very unaffordable. Too bad, it's a great city with so much natural beauty right on the outskirts.
