Half-Life's Radio Mod (Good Memories)

Ойындар

Valve employee Drunken F00l shifted the landscape of early Valve titles when he created AdminOP, which was an admin tool that was a more powerful server management tool than Valve's in house RCON tools. Along side AdminOP, Meta Mod came out and became the chosen admin tools for servers. Meta mod was powerful and also had plugin in support too. The majority of Gold Source Valve titles use admin tools like AMX mod which is a plugin for Meta Mod.
Meta mod's introduction to Valve titles birthed more plugins for the mod; Chicken mod, Ent mod, Monster mod, POD Bot, Hook mod and so many more all running on Meta mod. One of my favorites was Radio mod, made by Drunken F00l.
My introduction to the mod was on TFC servers during the Ent mod craze of the early/mid 2000s. My friend Arnivarez had the plugin enabled on his server in 2003 and my fascination with the mod and its loops were forever sealed.
Here's a complete list of the DF Loops:
whatislove.wav
move.wav
aroundtheworld.wav
phlacid.wav
popcorn.wav
stepup.wav
wipeout.wav
timeisnow.wav
superstar.wav
daloop1.wav
daloop2.wav
daloop3.wav
daloop4.wav
daloop5.wav
daloop6.wav
daloop7.wav
daloop8.wav
daloop9.wav
sgloop21.wav
sgloop14.wav
sgloop4.wav
sgloop29.wav
sgloop30.wav
woohoo.wav
The radio came with a total 25 songs! Due to the nature of copyright law Drunken F00l no longer was distributing the mod with the loops when his work went away from Gold Source development. You had to find the songs independently in the years later. These are not full length songs, but are instead loops. Some of the songs start normally, but then seamlessly transition into a loop toward the end of the .wav file.
There was an extended library of songs you can download here:
www.adminop.net/AdminOP/radiol...
Or downloaded them from my personal site:
vin-ltd.com//downloads/radiolo...
Note that if you download these you will have to edit the \Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\cstrike\addons\RadioMod\DF_radio.txt file to add the new songs.
To add them I'll take oksugar.wav from the downloaded .zip above and show you how it's added. Remember only 64 total songs are supported in Radio Mod.
If you scroll down to the bottom of the DF_radio.txt you will see the last line:
// #24
{
File =woohoo.wav
Name =Woohoo
shortname =woohoo
}
Simply copy any paste from the top curly brace ( { ) to the bottom curly brace ( } ) and add the oksugar.wav like this:
// #25
{
File =oksugar.wav
Name =Ok Sugar
shortname =oksugar
}
Notice how we just changed the naming conventions similarly to the one we copied from. It's as simple as that!
You can pitch songs up and down, add neat effects like colors, lasers, rings and exploding squares! The main console can be stood on, but the speakers are illusionary. You can detonate the radio to get rid of it or just shoot it to destroy it.
I really like this tiny modification for Half-Life and many others enjoyed the mod for a variety of titles, Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life: Death Match, Sven Co-op, The Specialists, Natural Selection, Counter-Strike 1.6 & Condition Zero, Day of Defeat, Opposing Force, Action Half-Life, Brain Bread, Zombie Panic! and Fire Arms.
Here are some notes from my e-mail conversation with Drunken F00l:
"The second-to-last control on the panel is “r007” which is the handle of a friend of mine from the time. The loops with da in the name were made by another friend DarkAngel. Sg was another whose full handle slips my mind at the moment.
I don’t remember fully how the model came to be. I do remember getting a render of a more realistic model from a different friend/acquaintance who eventually decided not to let me use it. That render and r007’s picture are both still laying around unsorted in my “Pictures” folder that I carry around on my Windows PCs.
The original texture files have a modified date of Nov 13, 2001. I’m pretty sure it was r007 that made the textures and then I made the model with a few artisanally placed blocks in Milkshape 3D. I’d have been 14.
There are some dupes in there, but whatever. I remember there was some drama around ownership of these loops and which communities could host the various loops way back in the day with their various music mods, but I don’t really remember details now."
-Drunken F00l
I hope those of you that experienced this mod from long ago and forgot about it have your memories rekindled. My only regret was not including "The Time is Now" song in the project.

    I have never seen anything like this video. The goldsrc aesthetic, the calming voice, the sounds, the nostalgia. Such a soothing experience. Thank you.

    This is one of the best KZread videos I've ever seen. I love subtle ambiance in the background. Additionally, this video acts as a great showcase of the mod. Having a fly by of the model while exploring all its details is such a great touch; a relaxed approach to online media that isn't seen often. The wind chimes are a great touch as well. My favorite CS experiences were mostly playing on a server with retirees on custom levels, many of which are similar to the ones featured here. You have some of the best CS content on KZread, and you fufill your niche wonderfully. I can't wait to see more of your videos.

    Wow thank you much. I really hesitated on trying this style out. I knew it wouldn't perform super well as attention spans are well- they could be better these days haha. To date, however, this is my favorite project! So glad you liked it.

    Dude. Entmod paired with radiomod was such a vibe back in the day. I also remember having some childhood friends who we would spend a lot of time in public tfc entmod servers, same with svencoop entmod. What a melancholic time, and seeing all these classic tfc/cs1.6/the specialists/svencoop maps is driving my nostalgia crazy. Thank you for this video, this hits a very specific niche of kids who grew up in the early 2000's, loving the hell out of our primitive games at the time and making the most of them

    I used to jam to 'The Time Is Now' Half-life remix and Popcorn on the radio back in the day with my childhood friend. I recently set up metamod in my TFC with entmod, hook, AdminOP, and radio mod simply so that I could experience it again.

    Yes! I wanted to include the time is now, but didn't get around to it. The video was getting a little too long. I probably could have talked for an hour about this mod. So cool you mentioned this track!

    Hundreds of hours spent on TFC, some of my earliest memories. AdminOP servers hanging out with chill people, watching them build, doing my own building, and of course the unforgettable radio mod! Thank you so much for making this video, it brought me way back.

    i used to host a rocket crowbar 1.9 server about 8 years ago which had ent mod and radio mod, me and my friends were just blasting tunes while making our own houses and bases, good times as someone who has played hl1 and cs 1.6 a lot during the early 2010s, i've never played on any servers hosting these mods which was a shame, the ent mod maps in particular seem really cozy

    been following since the skins before csgo video-- your content is so unique, not just because of the niche your internet experience allows you to talk about, but because you seem to have the editing style any person who watches lots of similar content on KZread would have. like you love videos, and that makes you better at making them. this departure from your usual style is really nice-- it helps people to experience a certain online world they might have never been a part of. great vid!

    Thank you! It's a Blue Bird SL XLR Cardioid Condenser Microphone I got back in 2014. I then record with FL Studio using Edison. Once I have the recording done with Edison, I select the entire recording and normalize it, then I denoise it by selecting the empty parts to get the background noise. Gather a noise profile and then apply the denoiser to the entire recording twice over. After that I'll add 3 plugins in this order over the voice clips. 1) Fruity parametric EQ 2 and I filter out the 200 hz range and a little bit of the 5,000 hz range too to take away the harsh "S" sounds. I'm kind of lisp-y and my voice on recording is very hard on the ears at the 5,000 hz range. This will be different for your voice. 2) Second is Maximus that I followed this tutorial on: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJ-Tpq1-epi-eKQ.html I'm still playing with the settings on this one. 3) Another final fruity parametric EQ 2 lightly bringing down the 3,000-5,000 hz range so my lip smacking and "S" lisp-y way of talking sounds better. So far this is what works for me, but I'm still tinkering with it every release to figure out the best quality. One other tip when using a filter on your voice is to mute the heat zones where you feel your voice is annoying. Mine is definitely the 5,000 hz range. Also the 200hz range is considered the "amateur'" zone. For some reason once you filter out 200 hz everything sounds more professional in my experience. Hope this helps and I look forward to your uploads!

    Great video, honestly never heard of radio mod, although I knew a mod like this existed somewhere. Btw, this could be just me, but does your music "lazy_morning.wav" sample from the song "Still D.R.E" by Dr. Dre? The 2 notes that go up and the 2 that go down on loop sound alike to the ones in that other song

    I'm glad that sound fidelity appeals to you too! The entity class is called ambient_generic from which sounds are played in the gold source engine. You are only allowed to use .wav files with this entity. To get them to work the .wav file must be a PCM unsigned 8 bit, mono bounce at 11025 Hz. It's crunches all the sound down into that classic Half-Life sound. That's all there is to it! And it sounds so warm and homey. Cheers!

    Eh, as "noschool" guy who played CS only a bit around the Zombie Mods with zm_ice_attack or zm_snowbase, I can't recall seeing that before this video. Still, I'm wondering if current "general mood" would give us again opportunity to relax and spend time like you did, without 'mature' voices from back of the head telling you that you're wasting time, you should grow up and so on. On the other side, maybe youngsters still do something similar but just in a different game and setting?
