Half in the Bag: Doctor Sleep and Parasite

Ойын-сауық

Mike and Jay realize there are no newly released movies worth wasting any amount of air on and discuss some recent-ish movies instead! The Academy Award-showered Doctor Sleep, and the box office bomb that nobody saw, Parasite!

I really liked that the overlook hotel felt smaller in Dr Sleep, it gave me the same feeling of returning to a place I knew as a kid and nothing is as big as you remember it being. As well as making the sets feel a bit more claustrophobic, like the walls of the hotel are closing in. In The Shining the whole idea is that this place is huge and there's everywhere to go but nowhere to hide when everything goes wrong, you could run forever and still be in the hotel. But in Dr Sleep it's a trap, there's nowhere to go, it's a literal dead end where they have to make their stand.

What makes Parasite so great especially to a Western audience is exactly what you guys hit on in this review. In the hands of Hollywood, this movie would have been a cheese fest with stereotypes everywhere. The poor would be good only doing crime to stay alive and the rich would be evil and horrible. This movie with it's incredible depth had so much more realism that highlights the difference so much more accurately, and I'm so glad it won best picture among all the nominees.

To be fair, I would say that parasite is more about the codependent parasitical relationship between classes and not so much a commentary on just how one class looks at the other. Which is good, because we already have enough movies that boil down to rich people evil and poor people good.

  • @lookbovine

@@Y-two-K Sort of... the prevalent depiction Hollywood has is rich people don’t do crimes, whereas the ultra-rich are either driven to ultra-violent crimes or sometimes being crime-fighting vigilantes. Luckily I got to see it in theaters just before the lockdown.

Parasite had an escalation of awfulness, which i hear is kind of a thing in korean cinema, where it started as a somewhat goofy comedy about a family of scammers " parasiting" on a richer but clueless family, ending into a tragedy with an hard hitting social commentary. The scene where the part of town in which the poor family lived gets flooded is one of the better metaphors i've seen in movies in years. It makes you think but it's also a great scene. Almost a perfect movie, imho. It has some issues, but it's the only movie i've seen in theatres in the last 10 years that made me think about it for weeks. The cinematography is great too, the actors are great, just a good movie all around. Is it the best movie ever made? No. Is it leagues better than most of the horrible movies that come out every year? Heck yeah

I don't really know why, but some movies are definitely more "foreigner" than others, maybe because American culture is a lot more similar to my country than from other countries.

@@josemarques2304 Jose Marques While this is true, I think the argument was that outside of english speaking countries, there is no real barrier or annoyance of subtitles, its just the way movies are consumed for the most part. Its not that people are way more into american movies, there just is way more american movies, and in general higher quality because of the amount of money in American cinema. As for the similiarity to America, its the same thing. Most popular media comes from america, which shapes the culture of most of the world

@@makeitbetter659 I think in my country it's a little different because literally anything that's remotely popular gets dubbed in here. Movies, anime, tv shows, video games, etc. So there is some annoyance of subtitles (much less than in the US of course) i would say most people of my country would rather watch something dubbed than watch it in it's original language and with subtitles, if something it's not dubbed here it is less likely to be popular. But in general i think you are right.

Ronin Dave not generally. It might be the case for blockbuster/popular movies because those are sociological events, but people aren’t always the mindless sheep that most reactionaries frame them to be. Sure, it’s easy to control masses, but individually, films like parasite and of lesser popularity weren’t made with the intention of creating drones. It got popular mostly due to its merits. I’d argue that Joker was intended as a strict change in the moral and philosophical landscape, although it is more likely a depiction of such. Besides, no one really takes the Oscars that seriously after a few days it passes. Anyone remembers Moonlight, a so-called woke film (a great one at that)? Any impact it had on the culture of America?

Interesting note about the scene in Doctor Sleep where the True Knot torture the kid: Mike Flanagan on the King Cast pod said that the version they filmed was actually even longer, and when they ran the movie by King, Stephen was basically silent apart from punching the air when he saw the kid's jersey was number 19 (one of many Dark Tower references), and the torture scene. During it, he turned to Flanagan and said "I know why you need (the scene), but that's a little much, isn't it?" Flanagan agreed, and cut it down from the longer version which was even more intense. The edited version is what's in the director's cut and the theatrical, and I don't wanna know what watching the original's like because goddamn, the toned-down version's already fucking hard to watch.

Bong Joon Ho's class politics have always been clear across all his films. Parasite does a great job of pointing out class structure and by avoiding painting the poor people as noble and morally good and the rich as evil, moustache twirling villains the criticism stays leveled at the system. The class structure ends up producing that ending and those people, not some internal moral failings. Good film.

I've heard this observation before, that the overlook hotel doesn't feel grand and large the way it does in The Shining. I actually appreciated this. In The Shining, Danny is a child. Everything would feel huge and expansive. When he returns as an adult, the hotel being scaled down reflects an adult perspective. He is a man now and the overlook is just a hotel. The ghosts are no longer tormenting a vulnerable child, but a powerful adult who has fully grasped his power. Whether these scaled down shots were intentional or not, I appreciated the affect. Besides we still got the epic reveal pulling up to the hotel with that iconic original shining score. I am satisfied.

Jammonstrald the movie was super obvious about its themes of class inequality and class warfare but it was kinda subtle regarding its anti rich and anti capitalist messages. An inferior, less subtle anti rich movie would paint the rich as pure evil and the poor as saints but parasite had enough nuance to paint both of them as morally ambiguous. Some people even missed the fact that the movie was anti capitalist. I’ve seen people erroneously think that the movie was criticizing both the rich and the poor equally. Look at Elon musk, who said parasite was his favorite movie of the year, despite the fact that his life is a captialist’s wet dream. And if anyone is skeptical of the movie being anti cap, the director himself has said in interviews that the movie, along with other movies he has made, are critical of capitalism.

@@rashotcake6945 You can watch anti-capitalist stuff and still think it's an amazing movie/series/show/game. I love capitalism, but i also love cyber punk themed stuff, and they're 90% of the times highly anti-capitalist and most of the times really on your face about it. But i do agree with your opinion, the movie was quite subtle about it's critique on capitalism, which is why i think, along with being South Korean (tons of young people, 30 and lower, highly obsessed with Korean culture, hypocrites who hate on people who even midly like japanese culture) are the reasons for why it got so much love from hollywood. Definitely a good movie, but not as good as to deserve all those awards.

  • @Jammonstrald

@E M One can like the movie without pretending it's something that it is not. It's not subtle, it's over the top; it's not nuanced, it's reductive; it's not revelatory, it's reactionary; it's not clever, it's an appeal to emotion. It's beautifully shot, well paced, and decently performed. But the writing sacrifices character, plot, world building, and internal consistency for the sake of really hammering its metaphor/message, while being unsure of what it really even wants to say about the ideas and people it is upset about. Being an overt, heavy-handed film doesn't make it bad. It just makes it overt and heavy-handed, which Parasite is. One can make the argument whether delivering the message in such a way is necessary, but one cannot argue that it is being delivered in that way. The person I responded to was making the claim "if the movie were what you were saying it is, it would contain things like (examples)", when it in fact does contain things like that. Saying that "those lines aren't actually cheesy though" does nothing to dispute that the movie uses simplistic ideas, language and imagery to tell the audience how they should feel and think. It's the difference between having the rich family in the movie act nice towards the poor family, and letting the audience decipher if and how much that nicety is a product of the family's prosperity through the expression of their character behaviors, versus having a character outright say "this is what is happening and how the filmmaker wants people to interpret this". Parasite does the latter throughout the movie quite pointedly, and it's cheesy.

Subtitles are basically essential for me to watch movies, and I kind of hate it when that isn't an option. There are legit actors who do mumble incoherently, like Sam Elliott and Jeff Bridges, so it can really be a lifesaver. Plus, let's not forget certain films, like Nolan's, when the score is blasted into your eardrums while everyone is basically whispering, and you feel like an old person, wanting them to turn it down just a bit, as well as fast paced thinker movies where the dialogue is absolutely critical and essential too. So, yeah, #teamsubtitles!

It was a purely political based award and had nothing to do with the merits and everything to do with awarding someone simply because they're not a white male. Everyone knows this. You must be blind and deaf if you don't at least sense it. The director should have stood on the principle of meritocracy and refused the the award for Best Picture. "You take away my freedom of speech and claim to know my opinion while my real opinion is ignored." - lol It's not possible to take anything away from anyone unless we were face to face. It could only be done physically, by holding your mouth shut as you tried to speak. That would be taking away your freedom of speech. You have an odd understanding of freedom of speech. (Do i need to end that sentence with "IMO"?) And opinions don't mean squat. You don't have to respect my opinions. Just make sure to respect our ability to formulate, have, hold and express opinions without fear of being punished or silenced by the government/police. That's the important thing. The content of an opinion is irrelevant. Disrespect the content all you want, that's fine. It's even okay to have no respect for me as an individual. Really it's okay. It's not going to paint you in a negative light for not liking someone or their opinions. Argument is healthy so long as it doesn't turn into physical violence. Call it like you see it, always look for the truth (not "your" truth, not "my" truth, THE truth), and always do your very best not to lie. You stick with that and the rest is cakewalk. lol Could it be that you don't live in the US? That would explain a couple of things. You don't have to answer, i was just curious.
