I straighten my daughters hair with one regular boar bristle brush. It works too. It is definitely much better than that straightening comb people use to do the chasing method.

I've just being using a regular boar bristle brush for this purpose for years. It's works well and I can see how this would have added benefit for some.

It's not the brush doing the straightening. It's the blow dryer. You can achieve the same stretch by holding your hair. Who's doing this voice over?

The brush does assist in a way that just pulling the hair taught just won't achieve. The brush seems to keep consistent tension on all the hair strands straight down the hair. I love the tension method but I can see where this is helpful.

I like both, never had a perm in my 58 years. I press, wear it natural. Not an obsession for those I know. I only know one woman that hates her natural hair.
