    Vince Vaughn saying "you must be part Indian. Let me hear your Indian war cry!" Was his way of saying that the polish guy who threw the knife was "savage". And called him "chief", because his "enthusiasm" with a weapon was prized by the military, & what he'd need to survive.

    He actually saved more than 75. Desmond was very, very humble. The Army estimated he saved more than 100 and Desmond said no more than 50, so they compromised on 75. Desmond's son was very impressed with Garfield and said he felt like his dad was alive again. They did take some liberties with the stories though. There is some interesting documentaries about him out there.

    Definitely. My understanding is the most likely count was 104 but I'm unsure if that includes the Japanese. He was actually in combat for 298 days (if I recall correctly) and Hacksaw Ridge and the men he rescued there are only part of the story (His service ending injury actually occurred later and he spent years in recovery and rehab).

    Interesting fact: A while back I Google Imaged one of the scenes where the soldiers were climbing up the ridge. One soldier who was upright, was about 1/7 the height of this cliff. If we take an even number and say he was 6’ tall, that would make the cliff about 42’ high. *The real Hacksaw Ridge was 450’ high*

    A great actor makes you forget that you are watching an "actor". That it's a performance. This is why I have issues with people who get mad about LGBTQIA actors playing LGBTQIA character/roles or similar. The whole point of becoming an actor is to fully convince the audience that you are the character, that you are coming to every decision as if it was a new thought/decision/process AS its happening. I have yet to hear someone convince me that their "group" deserves to never have a professional actor convincingly play the character of a role correctly and only people of their "group" should play it. Sometimes, a different person who has no idea, can give it a better understanding than people who grew up knowing about these things.

  • @PowerDiva

    @PowerDiva

    @@andidreyes5323 I agree... as someone who is part of the LGBTQ community, I don't necessarily feel that only LGBTQ people can or should play those roles. Part of acting is sinking into the character or role you are given, even if that person is nothing like you. Being a good actor is being able to do that successfully and believably. My only point of concern, would be to make sure that everyone is given a fair opportunity to audition for those roles... as long as that's happening, then may the best actor win the part. Regardless of their sexuality.

    The actual translation in the Bible is “you shall not murder“ often translated “you shall not kill” in modern translations. The reason we know it is murder that is addressed it’s because there are times when men are commanded by God to kill many places in the Bible. That takes nothing away from Desmond’s Believe and absolutely Godly bravery. He behaved as closely as he could to what he believed Christ would do.

    I’m pretty sure it wasn’t actually about what God would do or what Jesus would do-because Christians know no one can measure up to that-rather, it’s about what God has called you to do or become. That’s why Desmond doesn’t condemn war in itself. I think the way Desmond’s life played out showed him that he had the makings of an unrighteously violent person (the incident with his brother, and when he says he killed his father “in his heart,”) and so he consults with God and comes to the decision that he can never touch a gun. Then once he makes that promise, it becomes a matter of keeping his word to God, because his faith and love of God is stronger than his potentially violent nature. It’s a little bit like how the children of addicts often refuse to go near addictive substances because they know they’re more likely to have addictive tendencies. But imagine you had that tendency and so you made a promise to the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON in your life, the one that would be hurt the most by your becoming addicted to something, that you’ll not go near said substance ever. Your love for that person would hopefully help you resist temptation.

    If I was going to recommend anything else for you folks to react to, I would probably say Band of Brothers or The Pacific...at least if we are staying with World War 2. As others have noted, in a lot of ways the true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there was one thing that was changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor in both, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened. Also, in reality Hacksaw Ridge was out of range of naval gunfire...the Japanese chose the location in part to be safe from the fire of the really big guns on the battleships. The History vs Hollywood article on this movie is pretty good, and covers most the of the stuff that they changed or were mistaken about. I strongly recommend checking out History vs Hollywood for after you watch movies based on real history. They are usually the best place to get solid information about historical inaccuracies in a very easy to understand format, when they have an article posted about the film in question.✌✌

    Agreed. I think it's not entirely their fault, though. Men like Desmond Doss weren't exactly 'rare' in those days. They understood and took their responsibilities as men very seriously which led to the instances of 4Fs committing suicide because they couldn't serve. Young men today it seems - to our own detriment - aren't instilled with the same level of honor as they were just 50 years ago. These boys made references to Desmond that irritated the EFF out of me but I think the blame for that lies in their ignorance and youth - as well as the failures of today's society to bolster the value of men like Desmond Doss. At one point one of them mentioned in jest that this movie was an advertisement for veganism - no, it's a monument for honorable men that possess the courage and commitment to hold to their principles and to do what's right in the face of annihilation.

    I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic) in Vietnam (3 Tours). I had 4months of basic medical training and two months of combat medical training when I was assigned to the Marines. The army medical training is similar. They don't just say you're a medic. There are not enough men that volunteer to be a medic. Tests are taken while you are in training. If your test shows an aptitude for medicine, then they ask you to volunteer or just send you to school to be a medic. If you are not good at it they send you back to infantry. Most medics that have been in combat can do the job as well as or better than some doctors or nurses. According to the Geneva Conventions medics are not to carry offensive weapons. I never carried a weapon. During times not in combat the medic is supposed give first aid lessons to his whole platoon frequently. So, anyone can take over basic first aid if the medic is killed. They can carry a pistol for their own protection and the protection of the one they are working on. Those two medics in the same fox hole should never be close to each other during combat (That’s one of the first things you learn). One of my tours in Vietnam I was on a ship on the Co Chien River in the Mekong Delta. Me and another corpsman were the only medical personnel on board. Being the only medical person onboard I did everything medical. If you were on a ship or with the Marines, you were called Doc. We were taught that during combat conditions we were to be on opposite ends of the ship. The 2 corpsmen we replaced were together during a fire fight and they both got killed. You never remember all the ones that you have treated but you never forget the ones you can’t save.

Little did they know the cliff they were climbing up had all sorts had tunnels running all through it with several levels. We are all going to die. If you look from Genesis to Revelation God' s plan is to save people from the demonic influences of the Devil. Genesis 3:1-15 reveals what occurred in the Garden of Eden to bring about the Spiritual Battle. "And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." The first prophecy of which there are hundreds in the Old and New Testament, is here in verse 15... thy seed and her seed;." A woman does not have a seed. That comes from the man. This is a prophecy fulfilled in the virgin birth of The Son of God, Jesus Christ. Isaiah 7:14 and Luke 1:34-36. There are still dozens of prophecies to be fulfilled. Time is running out. God is positioning the Nations for the last great Battle of Armageddon. But it will be 7 years of Hell for Billions of the ungodly, and those who reject the free gift of Eternal Life that Jesus Christ offered with His death on the cross. The Resurrection shows that the Son of God and Second Adam, came from Heaven to regain what the first Adam lost in the Garden of Eden. Believe on Jesus Christ and what He did . He takes the sentence of the lawbreakers penalty because of His love for each and every one of us. John 3:16-17...

    Just today I bought myself a pocket sized New Testament, literally made to fit inside of your shirt pocket lol. I really wanted one like Desmond’s, but that particular size is hard to find. Even with how small it is, I looked at a good 30-50 different sizes of bibles at the store, judging by how thick it is, Desmond’s Bible in the movie is definitely a full Canonical Bible, likely the KJV, with all 66 books from Genesis to Revelation. That particular size of Bible is very expensive lol, like $40+ easily plus shipping online. I’m content though with having my full sized Good News Bible I got for free, and this shirt pocket NIV New Testament 😂

    Desmond accomplished what he did through his faith in Jesus Christ. What he accomplished was miraculous and not through his own ability. You can put proof before people's faces and they still won't believe because seeing is not believing which is why the scripture states "without faith it's impossible to please God." God wants your heart. ... that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 10:9‭-‬11 KJV

    @Robert Bretschneider Im gonna gamble that its true. Japan rarely took pows, marines didnt either on an individual basis. Most jap pows came from large group surrenders, given their habit of faking surrender them pulling a grenade when they got close
