Hacking and refilling paint pens...

This video covers how to maintain, refill, and hack your paint pens. (Find me on Instagram @kalaescobar)
The supplies I focus on are Posca and Ironlak pens, but I also talk about a few more brands like Molotov and Montana. Here are a few details about nib sizes, refill paints, and ordering options...
NIBS:
Posca nibs come in a plastic nib design for the 1M size and are made of felt for sizes 3M, 5M, and 8M. This is my favorite source:
www.durablesupply.com/poreti....
Ironlak nibs shown in this video are 1mm and 3mm. I often replace my 3mm Ironlak nibs with Posca nibs because I like the Posca nib texture/shape better. (5M Posca = 3mm Ironlak)
The Molotow High Solid 127 One 4 All Marker uses either the 1mm plastic nib or the 2mm felt tip. Molotow 1mm nibs are essentially the same size and type of nib as a Posca 1M, and Molotow 2mm nibs are essentially the same size and type of nib as a Posca 3M. The Molotow 1.5mm nibs, which are like a blunter version of the Posca 1M with a longer barrel, are another nib choice for the Molotow 127 Marker. I get all my Molotow supplies at ArtPrimo:
artprimo.com/catalog/molotow-r...
REFILLS:
Posca does not make a refill paint, but I buy large (8M or 17M) and use their contents to refill my smaller Poscas. (Note: You can put the 1M Posca nibs in the 3M barrel, which allows you to extend the range of colors in the extra fine tip...they make more colors in the 3M size.) I buy many of my pens locally, but a good online source is:
www.durablesupply.com/pospain...
Ironlak makes a 45ml refill paint that you can find here:
ironlak.com/categories/paint-...
Molotow pens are refillable. Although I haven't used them enough to review the refills, I love the pens, and the paint is good quality and worth exploring:
artprimo.com/catalog/one4all-m...
For watering down acrylic paint to use as a refill, I suggest Golden Airbrush Medium, which you can find in most art stores and on Amazon.
MISC:
You can find a few brands of empty pens here: artprimo.com/catalog/empty-mar...
Metal mixing balls here: artprimo.com/catalog/primo-mix...
And finally you can find Dycem on Amazon with a quick search...

Lol paint pens, it’s where the worlds of crafty soccer, nay orchestra moms, and graffiti artists meet. I know that the Molotow(yes pronounced like “Molotov”, a clever “bombing” reference) paint pens, and it very much looks like the Posca as well, are actually intended by the manufacturer to be refilled, so it’s not exactly a “hack” but OK. Great tips on refilling refillable paint pens though. Also, brands like Montana, Molotow, etc., actually seem to cater to/ are designed for street artists and graphic designers primarily, but they do tend to be some I’ve the highest quality stuff so they are beloved by all consumers. Thanks for the video!

I prefer to use paint that is the right consistency already. Molotow, Ironlak, and Montana brands all make refill paints, or you can open a large Posca and use that to refill the small pens. If I wanted to dilute a paint for a pen, I'd use a medium to thin it rather than water. I like Golden airbrush medium, as it is designed to reduce clogging. Hope that helps! 🙂

They sometimes get paint dried in the threads that allow the tip to unscrew, and occasionally I have had to give up and toss them. You can try using a pair of pliers to get a better grip, especially if you are going to throw it away and have nothing to lose! Good luck!!

I had a Posca shipped from Japan.... This one was actually glued shut. That's actually a thing to take in to consideration among different paint markers. Some are left to unscrew, some are right to unscrew.. if you can't it to go either way then it's glued. In which case figure out which way it's supposed to go based on the brand (I.E your Posca is to the left to unscrew) and keep trying until the glue weakens and opens up.

@The Pop! Artist You can grasp the tip with pliers and yank it out, but you have to be so rough that it's hard not to damage it. Also, there is no way to replace the tip and refilling isn't very feasible because of the design, so I don't think there is much point. Hope that helps! :)
