Habit You MUST Acquire - Keystone Habit

Most of us want to improve our lives. But for that to happen, we need to adopt certain positive habits.
Fundamentally speaking, habits play a key role in our day to day lives.
But not all habits are created equal. Some can have a much bigger impact than others.
This is why it's important that we learn to identify these habits and develop them.
Charles Duhigg, author of the book "The Power of Habit," calls them "keystone habits."
So what is a keystone habit?

Funny enough, my keystone habit turned out to be playing pool. At first it seemed like a passtime at best, and a complete waste of effort at worst. But then I started playing in tournaments and competing. Then I realized how poor I am at it so I set aside an hour a day to practice. This increased my discipline greatly. My results improved, spurring me on. Then I noticed I play much better when I'm well rested. So I started sleeping better. My results improved further, spurring me on. I made a schedule of "test" sessions once a month so I can track my progress. I soon noticed that, despite my technical progress, I fold under pressure in tournament games. So I read a few psychology books, educated myself and started meditating. My results improved further. The meditation sessions improved other areas of my life. I lose my temper less often than I used to, relaxing my family life. My steadier schedule allowed me to start working out every morning. My strength and health both improved. So did my gameplay. It's been 2 and a half years and I'm very close to breaking into the top tier of players in my country. Most of them have been playing for 10+ years. Keep your focus, keep practising, keep progressing and you can reach the top faster than you expect!

¤ some of my time management recommendations: 1) when you finish a job, start the next job (because today's social media and internet so distractors.) 2) take note of the lesson you learned so you don't make a mistake again. 3) develop methods against today's distractors (only watch your watch later folder videos) I became a Muslim and started praying 1 year ago. Then I quit my bad habits. I enrolled lot of courses. I learned lot of things, languages ,and effective time management(because 5 times praying divides the day pieces). Whatever your story is, use your time well because we live only once friends. stay with love ✌

My keystone habit is going for a jog in the morning. I found that if I haven’t got enough sleep that I choose not to run, so I started to go to bed earlier. I noticed that I began being on schedule for my daily routine instead of procrastinating because getting up going outside for 30 minutes then coming inside to shower and change makes me have to keep moving on a solid morning schedule. Exercising every morning made me look into my eating habits. I can’t run on junk food. So I started to review my meals and the times that I eat. I’m calmer and more clear headed on the days that I run. It really does work.

You are so right about sleep. I notice that whenever I sleep late, it ends up consuming my entire morning plus when I wake up, I have no energy and motivation to do things. Sleeping late = oversleeping = lack of energy and motivation to do things and other habits = laziness = zero success. Sleep is underrated.

I have a habit of giving myself a pep talk before work. I name the same three things I am grateful for every day...my Health, Wealth, and Opportunity...and I elaborate how each ties to the other, and how all work in conjunction with one another. As I drive to work delivering pizza, I say aloud, "I will adopt and maintain a positive upbeat attitude, Let's go make some Money...WooHoo! Yes, I actually literally do all that! And I make the Tips! :D

When I stopped sleeping enough time, I noticed that I had lost all my motivation, my daily cycles went wrong, my willpower is low, I don’t want to read books, do exercises, eat healthy food. And I stopped to sleep enough awarenessly, to check how does this affect me. When I started to sleep normally again, I made sure that I was right - a healthy sleep is the strongest habit that I have to keep!)

I’ve been sleeping poorly ever since coronavirus started affecting us, and I moved back in with my parents. I’d go to sleep each night at 2 for months, and I’ve only scaled it back to 12 recently. I’ll go to sleep having been watching videos on my computer for hours. I’ve been neglecting my studies, I’ve fallen into a depression, I’ve stopped enjoying my hobbies, but this shit ends here. After my shower I get changed and go and read for a while (anywhere up to 1 hour) and then I go do work, I haven’t learnt to meditate, write or use affirmations or gratitude but these are things I’d like to try in the future

I started with sleep, exercise and meditation. I really made sure that i got those habits stick to my daily routine. Then i got addicted to building new ones. Now i also do nutrition, journaling, reading, and affirmations. I'm not the best person to give advice but i highly recommend those 3 habits to anyone as they compliment each other. Meditation helps with sleep and muscle recovery from exercise. Exercise helps with sleep and enhances meditation. And sleep aids muscle growth and ease of meditation.

Health Trinity: Exercise, Diet and Sleep. My favorite, is sleep. In early 2018, (at age 75), decided to get into shape by a daily exercise program involving 10 muscle groups. During all my prior years, I focused mostly on self-education in several different areas to offset the garbage taught in public schools. It was not all reading as I built my home, and learned about carpentry, plumbing, and house wiring. In addition, I got into what I always wanted to do--restore old cars, including engine rebuilding. Age 75 is too old? NONSENSE ! All is in the mind. In the past 18 months, I've increased some more muscle mass, and lost 30 lbs. Along with exercise, I've changed my diet. No meat, no dairy products (except butter), little breads, more protein foods (lentils, YUK), Sunbelt Breakfast bars, oatmeal for breakfast, whey, grapes. I grow tomatoes, peas and squash. (I just baked a German chocolate cakes and a squash w/ butter and brown sugar). I gotta have some treats for working out. If you prefer to slack off: “Keep the faculty of effort alive in you by a little gratuitous exercise every day. Do every day or two, something for no other reason than that you would rather not do it. Everybody should do at least two things each day that he hates to do, just for practice.” --"The Principles of Psychology", Chap IV Habit, William James, page 82 , in “Britannica Great Books”

Resume for this video You may want to be a perfect person immediately so you want to make a lot of good habits at the same time. But if you do that you will fail again and again (at least in my experience). Everything needs time so the best way you should practise one habit and that habit will trigger another habit. And some habit called keystone habit, do you start with those it will make huge impact to your life. Keystone habit : - Do exercise - Sleep well - Have a good diet - Journaling - Meditation Just need to start with one at least 30 days and another habit will come in a natural way. Thanks for reading. I'm just trying to improve my English writing :)

My keystone habit is actually more of an idea or maybe a mental trick to help with motivation. It is the habit of minimizing my other habits/goals with the five minute trick. Just devote 5 minutes to any task. I have various interests and hobbies, but i wasn't sticking to any one particular thing regularly. So I decided to devote five minutes to each task (playing piano, drums, painting, yoga, etc.) It really boosted my motivation and interest across all categories. It even makes it much easier to do simple chores like tidying up. It becomes a lot less of a barrier if you tell yourself, "well, i might as well do it now, because it will only take five minutes" Viola! It helps with time management, embracing the "now", and the value of my time and efforts. I just started this trick so I am protecting this mental trick at all costs!!!

My keystone habit is newspaper reading. I have been reading english newspapers regularly for more than 10 years now and it has helped me immensely in improving my general knowledge and I have been a successful national level quizzer. Also, my increased proficiency in English has allowed me to express myself better and has helped me clear various competitive exams like civil services. It is indeed a life changing habit.

One keystone Habit I developed was playing soccer for fun. At first, I was literal trash...and no kidding, I was really bad. But as I kept playing with other kids in my neighborhood, I developed a competitive mindset where I wanted to be the best in the game. With this mindset, I kept playing and trying to improve by analyzing what other kids did, which developed another habit of learning from other people's techniques. I don't want to write too much, but I've got to admit...this video REALLY helped me realize how important keystone habits are and that I already developed many keystone habits without even realizing it. It's been nearly 4 years since I first got interested in soccer, and the extra habits I acquired are *ENDLESS.* I was able to work hard enough to make it on the school team, get much healthier, etc! Thanks for reading :D

I absolutely agree sleep is the King habit. However, I have seen that so many people have terrible sleep quality, not due to necessarily binging on alcohol or staying up too late or blue screens, but because they are in pain. Being in pain causes them to choose poor mattresses with excess memory foam, which will hurt their sleep quality due to them sweating and overheating at night. Therefore in order to establish the keystone habit of sleep, they must be healed from their pain, which is going to come primarily through exercise, and secondarily through diet. Therefore there needs to be baby steps in all three health habits, as they complement one another and sometimes are a stopping point for another.

Thank you for this video. I really like the idea of keystone habits and agree with your lesson. An addition that I'd like to hear about perhaps on another video is not only physical keystone habits, bit keystone patterns of thought or emotion. I have a feeling that this is one step deeper into the idea of keystone habits. What makes us exercise, commit to better sleep and eat healthy?? I have a feeling they resonate at a level deepest to us related to those associated with self esteem, self-consciousness and identity. I feel having healthier habits of the mind will help lead us to the healthier keystone habits.

Brilliant video. My + keystone habit is is meditation. My - keystone habit is smoking. Both are difficult. It's not easy to learn and maintain meditation. It's not easy to quit and continue to say No to tobacco. I guess human are not machine. We make errors and we can't be perfect all the time. But we can always maintain our balance.

One of the habits I had was waking up at 5 to do my own stuff. I'm just so sad that I'm unable to keep it up while pregnant 😰 I find it socially hard sometimes to change these habits. People are so unable to not compare themselves when you do something that everything they do is put you down.
