    I learned grammar first and thought I understood it but it was always just so confusing. I took another approach: Vocab, Vocab, Vocab! Grammar just glues it together and now I understand all the grammar concepts! Vocabulary is much more important in the beginning of language learning as grammar is just the naked framework at that point

    I once mentioned the は/が difference to a Japanese friend, and she just said they were the same. I raised an eyebrow, was all "yeah, they're not though..." and she insisted they were the same. >_ After 12 years of living in Japan and 15 years of learning Japanese, I have a sort of 'instinct' of which to use, but I know I still make mistakes. It's also hard to explain to other learners. It's sort of like explaining the difference between 'a' and 'the' in English to Japanese learners--not the same functions, of course, but a similarly nuanced difference that's tricky for non-natives to grasp. I hope I can explain 'a' and 'the' to my students as well as you did は/が here and in your last video.

  • @arpitkumar4525

    @arpitkumar4525

    4 жыл бұрын

    'a' and 'the' is simple. First of all, both are used for referring to a single thing. But the difference is that 'the' is used for referring to the only thing or if you want to point out a thing(For example "The cat is cute" means you are talking about a single specific cat whereas the sentence "A cat is cute" is a generalizing statement meaning all cats as a whole are cute or any cat is cute). 'The' can also be used for giving emphasis("This is the only thing I want"). So it is similar to "Ga" in Japanese but has fewer use cases and has less emphasizing power than Ga(Like you wouldn't say "The sister got pregnant" if you want to give emphasis. You would still say "My sister got pregnant!!" with a rising tone) I remember my classmates having difficulties with the usage of 'a' and 'the' when I was in Kindergarten but to me it was easy. Hope my explanation will make sense to others who were still confused.

  • @eclmist

    @eclmist

    @@arpitkumar4525 Unfortunately, your explanation is not entirely accurate. "A cat" is not a generalization. "There is *a* cat in the room". "All cats are cute, but there is *a* cat who is not". Both of these statements refer to a specific cat. The actual difference is that you have to use "a" when introducing the subject for the first time, but must use "the" when referring back to the same subject later. Example: *A* cat fell through the roof. *The* cat, however, was completely unharmed. In this instance, both "a" and "the" refers to the same cat. However, you must use "a" first, and then only use "the" in subsequent references. TL;DR: "A cat is cute" is *not* a generalizing statement. If you want to generalize, you should instead say "Cats are cute", without using a/the at all.

    Ill-Made Knight that is the funny thing with *native speakers* , they actually *have many mistakes* since *they mostly learn just "by ear"* since they are born, whereas us, "the foreign learners" , learn "correctly" mostly by reading and "analyzing" , so it is not surprise that your Japanese friend thought they were the same

  • @dmitriyborisenkov4332

    @dmitriyborisenkov4332

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@eclmist I didn't quite get why the cat from your example is not a generic one? One might ask a friend to put any single cat to the room and then say "There is a cat in the room" without knowing which cat is there. Being in the room is not an identifier for a cat, isn't it? The same for not being cute, it's not an identifier, you still refer to a generic cat. By the way, if there is a law that there must be the only cat in any room in the world, and this cat must never leave it, and it follows from the room somehow which cat permanently resides there, can we still refer to it as "a cat in the room"?

  • @eclmist

    @eclmist

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@dmitriyborisenkov4332 I think we might have a slightly different notion of what it means to be "generic". I was pointing out that, in the comment I was replying to, saying "a cat" certainly does not mean "all cats" (which was what he referred to as "generalization"). Identifiability is not the issue here. All we're really interested in is the gramatical correctness of sentences that began with "a" and "the". Saying "a" will *imply* that we're talking about *one* and *only one* thing. Saying "the" without first introducing the topic, while usually understood due to it being a common mistake, would not gramatically make sense and can warrant a reply like "the cat? What cat?". Note that, there is a subtle nuance here: The subject does not need to be *introduced* right there and then. For example, *if it is understood* that there is a cat living in the house, then you would always refer to it as "the cat". However, when *telling someone* who *does not know* of the cats existence, you will still have to first tell them that "there is *a* cat in my house". This is not a simple grammar as it has many nuances. This is kind of why I replied to the original comment in the first place - if someone thinks that they understand it very well, there is a good chance they don't understand it at all.

Actually I've heard this phrase used occasionally in English, but only ever in a joking way (in the context of bf/gf). More natural would be "will you be my girlfriend?" or "do you want to go out with me?". If you asked someone directly "are you taking applications?" (with a grin), they'd probably laugh. :)

    Great video Miku! Your examples are really easy to understand and your skits are entertaining. Do you think you will ever add kanji with furigana to the text in your videos? I think it would help those who are studying kanji while still not alienating those who may not know the kanji yet. Hope you don't mind the feedback and keep up the great work! :)

    Thanks so much for your lessons. I love the way you have structured them to include a test at the end. A trained teacher? Question on the section you included on inanimate objects. Are the verbs here intransitive and so have to take が as there is no direct object. That sounds really nerdy of me.
