If your goal was to watch Anime without subtitle, don't learn Kanji just learn the grammar If your goal was to be fluent, then learn Kanji and the grammar If your goal was to live in Japan, then learn Kanji, the grammar and the Pronounciation

Some really great advice! :) I have been self studying (probably not enough) for 4 years now and I finally moved to Japan last month, so I'm really trying to learn as much as I can now! :D

really nice video my guy, almost half of my family is japanese (my great-grandfather moved to Brazil with his family to start a new life here back in the 40s) and I've always had this feeling of wanting to connect with my roots, and I think learning japanese/immersing in the culture would be a great way to do that. For now I'm working on my french as a third language because of university (I study Linguistics and Translation) but I'd love to give it a try someday and probably will as soon as I get the chance

I got interested in Linguistics and Translation when I was in 8th grade because I "grew up bilingual" (don't have parents from different countries but I've had unlimited access to the internet since the age of 7 so I inevitably learned english) and since my favorite subjects in school were all related to languages and communication I began to search for information about the topic. The thing is that there are lots and lots of areas that you can work on if you become a translator/interpreter (btw, the main difference between translators and interpreters is that translators work with written texts and interpreters work with conversations happening in real time). Right now I'm very interested in translating movies, tv series, videogames, doing subtitles and interpretation. Also, I don't know if it's the same for every country (probably not) but during graduation you only get to work with two languages (and the first one must be your native one, but you can choose your second so in this case I chose english). The good thing is that your teachers are always motivating you to learn more since, as a translator, you'll have to read a lot and learn a lot from different areas (for example, if you get the opportunity to translate scientific articles you'll have to aquire some knowledge from this area in order to do a good job) so that's kinda the reason why I started learning french, because most of the material we use in university to learn more about translation is translated from french to portuguese (in my mind it kinda made sense because this way I'm gonna be able to comprehend things on a deeper level). It's a very interesting major and I definitely recommend it if you like to learn foreign languages

Short summary for me to read later. I really like your idea about using songs to practice all aspects of learning the language! I'll probably use a tablet for the writing practice though since if I don't use the correct stroke order the character doesn't print which prevents me from ingraining bad habits. Thanks! 1. Learn Hiragana and Katakana 2. Use Renshuu 3. Use Tae Kim's Guide for learning Kanji 4. Get lots of input (immersion based learning approach) 5. Practice output (speaking Japanese) on Discord or in real life 6. Writing Practice: >>6a. Find a Japanese song you like >>6b. Look up a translation of the whole song with romaji transcript >>6c. Listen to the words, repeat the words >>6d. Try to understand the words, look them up if you need to. >>6e. Write the song lyrics on one side of a piece of paper (in Japanese, using Romaji as a source) >>6f. Translate the lyrics on the other side of the piece of paper (in English/Your Native language)

i will probably be making a video on that but just quickly: first of all make sure it’s full japanese, no english subtitles and generally the best to learn are slice of life anime because there’s a lot of daily conversations i recommend -teasing master takagi san -komi cant communicate -mashle (had easy japanese as i remember) -azumanga daioh -lucky star -urusei yatsura was rly cool -kimi no na wa stuff like that

oh does that really sound like that to you? my japanese friend has also pointed out once that my “k” “g” “t” “d” sometimes sound similar! ive improved that, but in this case, im pronouncing hiragana and katakana in english accent, not japanese! Thanks for pointing that out bro! I’ll improve my pronounciation even more!

Why Romanji when you just could use furigana?

It’s fine either way. Romaji transcript is simply easier to find and available on the lyrics websites I use. Furigana would be better definitely. There is probably a web extension that adds furigana. I will make sure to find it and share it with others.

@@flewberi what i do is using yomichan for words/readings i don't know. As its fully integrated in the browser i don't need copy/paste it to another site, and don't need romanji/furigana.

Use furigana so that if you can learn much faster using Romaji, and then just learn the kanji directly, if you stop the study you lose the kanji and the words, if you use only the Romaji you will only lose the words.
