H1MIN: U.S. TINY TIM ROCKET
Ғылым және технология
In 1944, The U.S. Navy was in need of an anti-ship weapon capable of hitting outside the range of heavy anti-air defenses. Engineers at Caltech designed a large caliber air launched rocket powerful enough to damage heavy shipping. It was the largest rocket in the US arsenal at the end of WWII.
Due to its large size it was given the nickname Tiny Tim.
A version can be seen at the Smithsonian Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly VA, USA

@@CaptainLumpyDog I didn't get it at first. It took me quite a while and some significant brain exercising. But I finally did get it. I think? One of my favorite weapons. One of my favorite aircraft is the Martin AM Mauler. (The Douglas AD Skyraider is also cool, but it ain't the Mauler!) From the mid-50s (1950s, that is), there were pictures of this aircraft. One of my favorite pictures from then (there were no computers of note, not even TVs for my family, there were brick and mortar libraries) was of that aircraft with three aerial torpedoes. and twelve 250 pound bombs. There was another one with two torpedoes, a 750 pound bomb and twelve 5" rockets. After almost 70 years, I realize that they are not two torpedoes, they are two 11.75" Tiny Tim rockets! Notice the weapon's tail 'fins'. (Thanks to my Ginter book, Naval Fighters Number 111, ISBN 9-780-9993-8848-8.) The memories! Military History in a Minute, thank you for your efforts. Too all, may you and yours stay well and prosper.
Imagine being the pilot that has to hit a moving ship from outside of its air defense range with only 2 unguided rockets

the intersting thing is that 1500m is well inside of anti air range for literally every warship larger than a fishing boat. So that design specification was not achieved at all.

@@xxnightdriverxx9576 I mean it must be harder to hit the plane with ww2 flak guns from that distance.

@@xxnightdriverxx9576 In theory yes, in practice, it was very hard for things like the japanese 25mm to hit anything flying at speed and 1km away. The ability to shoot from that far away and scoot would indeed have increased Survivability agaisnt enemy ships at least based on the enemy this was designed around.

These feel like circa 2004-2006 History Channel episodes. All the commercials cut out. And the filler removed. Pure and concentrated.

Tiny Tim! It's a long time since I've thought about these beauties. Excellent video. I was also reminded of the Azon guided bombs used to great effect on the Burma Railway and also the Bat radar guided anti ship bombs. All the best and keep up the great work.

Amazing video as always, did you know that the tiny tim's engine was also used in early rocketry/spaceflight? It was used on the WAC corporal rocket en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAC_Corporal Tiny tim was the key to get sience payloads a tiny bit up (: Have a great day (: (PS: what modeling program do you use?)

Thank you for you comment, quite appreciated. You do bring up a good point to which it would be nice if someone had a more informative answer. You are right 1,500m is well within the range of small caliber AA in WW2. I'm guessing it's "effective AA" range meaning reduced likelihood of getting hit?

It's likely the original specification required, probably they wanted a safer method of attacking ships instead of torpedoes and dive bombing, hence it was retired quite early and used against ground targets in Korean war.

Could you make one about the panzerblitz rockets? Preferably 1, 2 and 3. They are very interesting. Or you can also talk about the flakvisieren for the german light AA guns and how they worked.
