H1MIN: RETTUNGSBOJE - LUFTWAFFE'S RESCUE BUOY

Ғылым және технология

The German Rettungsboje or Udet Buoy was a unique rescue device to help pilots who crashed in the English channel survive the cold water until rescue during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Well equipped with survival gear and supplies, it helped air crews stay dry and provide first aid until boats or air rescue could bring them back to base.
The British later built a similar boat called the ASR-10.
One survives today at the Scottish Maritime Museum.

Tabacco was also included in Allied survival rations as withdrawal in a survival situation could lead to problems.

@@FirstDagger Cigarettes were also part of the armed forces daily rations, so it makes sense. The majority of men smoked back then, though it was not proper for women to smoke! My grandfather was in the navy both before and during WW2. He joined when he was young and initially neither smoked nor drank, so he would infuse his tobacco with rum and give it to his father on leave, who smoked a pipe. He was quite a character (pronounced rascal!). All the best everyone

@@red_d849 Perhaps bailing out over dear Blighty may have been a better idea! Certainly a warmer, dryer one. Actually now that I come to think of it, I wonder if the Luftwaffe had any aircrew take to their parachutes prematurely over England and opt to become POWs to escape the fighting? As most of their bombers had only one pilot and no mechanic, it would have been simple to feign a mechanical problem by starving an engine of fuel. I don't suppose that, even it could, it would have been recorded even by the notoriously efficiently Germans.

Germany had these _Rettungsboje_ (Luftwaffe Rescue Buoys). Britain had _Air-Sea Rescue Floats_ which performed a similar function. They were usually checked often (twice daily if close to controlled coast, once every day or two in uncontrolled sea farther away). Sometimes, downed airmen/seamen would be found occupying enemy rescue buoys. There's even a recorded instance of enemies sharing a buoy and making friendly bets about which side would rescue/capture them. Germans and Allies alike would often inspect enemy rescue buoys - sometimes restocking or "trading" rations, treats, and liquors - because you never knew when one of your own would need it. There was still a lingering sense of honour (at least in the minds of military commanders), one did not gun down a parachuting pilot or a drowning sailor if it was avoidable. It was a bitter, hateful, ugly conflict. Yet these rescue buoys were generally respected by both sides as beneficial assets which should not be attacked. They would sometimes exchange prisoners found on the buoys, or simply leave them on the buoy and inform the enemy where to collect them. At least until the Germans began stationing machine gunners on their rescue buoys towards the end of the war.

I saw a picture of one in a time life book about the battle of britain. It had broken loose from it's anchorage and drifted to a beach in Dover I think. Handy little things.

What a bloody good idea, how come I've never heard of these things before ?, & I live on these type of channels, it'd make a great movie or even a series, very professionally done video.
