H1MIN: ATTACK ON USS STARK (FFG-31)

Ғылым және технология

May 17, 1987 the USS Stark (FFG-31) was struck by two AM39 exocet missiles, killing 37 US Sailors and injuring 21. The US claimed that an Iraqi Mirage F1-EQ fired the missiles, but since allegations have been made that is was an Iraqi modified business jet. There is interesting evidence to support this claim and how it happened.

To add a lttile bit more detail on that story : The falcon that was likely used was modified by Dassault (who also manufactures the f1EQ), for the iraqi army. It was fitted with 2 pylons, a cyrano radar, and a mirage cockpit on the right half of the regular falcon cockpit (as well as all of the electronic of course). It was originally meant to be used as training plane, to help iraqi pilots learn how to use the navigation and attack equipments. The pylons (which are actually located under the root of the wings) were only meant to carry laser designator pods, and reconaissance photography pods, but that pylon standard was also shared by the exocet missile, which meant the iraqi could use it to carry weapons.
