-------

what an extraordinarily moving sequence matched by great signing , 51:38 a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, --59.55 Thy rebuke has broken his broken his heart-- ------- lovely portrayal of the man of sorrows. The context makes the singing so poignant "John 1: 11-13 "He was the world , and though the world was made through him,the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet, to all who did receive him,--- he gave the right to become children of God."

I miss some of my favourite choir pieces like "And He shall purify" after the alto arie "But who will abide", then "Surely" after "He Was Despised" etc. It seems that in this shortened version exactly the choir pieces were massively cut. A pity. But overall I like the performance and especially the dirigent. Have you noted, that Ian Bostridge sings everything by heart, without looking into the scores?

*** In some passages the performance is played too fast, as if the musicians were in a hurry. In these passages I miss the opportunity to reflect on what the text has to say to us. Then I also lack the devotion that should be appropriate. The recording of Karl Richter in 1965 is still the reference par excellence for me.

A beautiful, beautiful performance. It is difficult to believe that Handel wrote Messiah in - I think - 24 days. He must have been channelled; a deep and holy spirituality oozes from every note. However, I don’t know what the significance of the red/black background is, but from some angles it looks utterly demonic.
