My dad would listen to Handel's Messiah every year at Christmas. ...This Christmas, I don't have him. I am listening to this because I miss him. He served as a pastor for at least the 39 years of my life and, while fighting pancreatic cancer, he was diagnosed with 6 months and lived 3 years instead. Every visit to the VA and the doctors and the MRI and the surgery and the chemo... he used any strength he had to ask everyone, "Do you know Jesus? How is your relationship with Jesus?" He reached out to nurses, orderlies, staff... even as he had to use a rollator to get around, he still had my mom take him to Market Square and he would sit and share the Word of God with whatever strength he had right until the end. God, make me as bold. May God bring you peace in this difficult time. Know He is there. He has not forsaken you. We just must be still and quiet enough to hear Him. He is there to comfort like nothing you have ever known. Sometimes we have to get rid of distractions in our lives so we can hear Him.

Perhaps the most magnificent comment I have ever read - having read thousands. I served with my 97 year old father on the Midway today encouraging visitors who cared to stop to Talk with a WWII Veteran Today that the Lord has this whole apparently crazy mess - and, yes, He has it with crazy Joy, nearly unspeakable except as in your father's case, with severe mercy and joy. Merry Christmas. Shalu Shalom, Yerushalaim. Can't wait to meet him with Him!

I have listened to this performance several times but this year I needed it more than ever. Having terminal cancer in the time of Covid I sometimes wonder what will get me first, but this video makes me much more accepting of whatever God has planned for me. I am grateful to KZread for making wondrous musical experiences like this as close as my computer, and I plan on leaving this world fulfilled.

The best modern performance of this work. I started singing Messiah in 1965 as a senior in high school as the soprano soloist. I continued on to sing in the concert choir at ASU in the later 60's. What a JOY to sing this wonderful work. Interestingly I knew who Jesus was through this music, but did not commit my life to HIM until 1983. I sang the Messiah every year with some group as I grew into maturity either as a soloist or in the choir. I know now at 76 He had been calling me through the music because I was not hearing any other way at the time. I still have the same score from high school which I cherish with all the markings over the years. I love to sing along even though my soprano voice has lost its height and flexibility but I can hear my voice as I sing along having memorized it all. What a JOY in my life to have this in my heart. Jesus is The Reason for The Season.

”“Comfort and keep comforting my people,” says your God. “Tell Yerushalayim to take heart; proclaim to her that she has completed her time of service, that her guilt has been paid off, that she has received at the hand of Adonai double for all her sins.” A voice cries out: “Clear a road through the desert for Adonai! Level a highway in the ‘Aravah for our God! Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill lowered, the bumpy places made level and the crags become a plain. Then the glory of Adonai will be revealed; all humankind together will see it, for the mouth of Adonai has spoken.” A voice says, “Proclaim!” And I answer, “What should I proclaim?” “All humanity is merely grass, all its kindness like wildflowers: the grass dries up, the flower fades, when a wind from Adonai blows on it. Surely the people are grass! The grass dries up, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.” You who bring good news to Tziyon, get yourself up on a high mountain; you who bring good news to Yerushalayim, cry out at the top of your voice! Don’t be afraid to shout out loud! Say to the cities of Y’hudah, “Here is your God! Here comes Adonai Elohim with power, and his arm will rule for him. Look! His reward is with him, and his recompense is before him. He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering his lambs with his arm, carrying them against his chest, gently leading the mother sheep.” Who has counted the handfuls of water in the sea, measured off the sky with a ruler, gauged how much dust there is on the earth, weighed the mountains on scales, or the hills in a balance? Who has measured the Spirit of Adonai? Who has been his counselor, instructing him?“ ‭‭Yesha 'yahu (Isa)‬ ‭40‬:‭1‬-‭13‬ ‭CJB‬‬ bible.com/bible/1275/isa.40.1-13.CJB

Then being bussed, to a rare HBCU/AG-HIGH SCHOOL in another tiny country town in Mississippi, previously attended by my momma and aunt and uncle. As a High School student in the chior my LOVE of classical music only heightened. Music meant the world to me. I also played Tenor-Sax as an advid member of the band. I now play this for my 5 children. This was a fantastic performance!!! Eternally thankful for this artform.🥰🥰🥰🥰

Jeff First, recover well. I have sung this live every year since 1967, both as a soloist and chorus, so I understand your attachment to this tradition. There were a couple of times I wished for a slightly slower pace ( Pastoral Symphony) but that’s nit picking. A sterling job by soloists, orchestra and chorus.

Every country who is at war, whether a civil war or against other nations, should have to listen to Handel's "Messiah" before taking up arms. It doesn't matter what religion one is. This symphony is universal in its hopes for peace and reconciliation. Also, how did these guys do this? The composers of yesteryear are absolutely amazing and impossible to replicate. I bow down to the musical excellence of these men.

For those interested the venue is L'Abbeye de la Chaise Dieu near Lavaudieu, France. The Abbey is a famous 14th Century church. In the concert you can see a tomb in the audience, which is a rare Papal tomb not in the Vatican, of Clement VI. Also note the mediaeval mural going round the wall near the altar showing a Danse Macarbe.

"Fantastic performance," a hackneyed phrase to be sure but it took just a few minutes of listening to this performance to realize that something very special was occurring on that platform. I have loved Handel's Messiah for nearly all of my 70+ years but have never been so moved, so enthralled, so aware of the many nuances and subtle interplays of this magnificent work until tonight. My heavens how could the audience remain in their seats after so powerful a rendition of what is unarguably the greatest oratorio ever written.

If Handel was alive to witness such an excellent and exceptional performance of his work, he would have been moved emotionally. The total ensemble from the conductor, the soloists and the chorus were all transformed during this performance. Their souls were lifted, raised to a divine place and they delved into their souls to deliver such an exquisite rendition. Indeed the trumpet sounded, the orchestra responded, and the singers were all changed during this performance 👏 Even the dead were raised incorruptible! The best performance of Handel's Messiah have ever heard.

The conductor interpret as modernized version Messiah. 1 Chronicles 29:11 - 13 11. Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. 12. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. 13. Now that’s it’s being played more often on replicated period instruments (gut strings, etc) and period-sized orchestras, as this version is - as it was originally performed, and meant to be performed - it is less ponderous than when played by a modern, 80-piece orchestra. Thus, it’s a “low-fat, no-fat” version: de-light-ful!

Actually, not to detract from Handel, but it was his friend (can't remember his name at the moment) who chose the Scriptures and asked Handel to put them to music. He wrote the music, borrowing a little from his earlier operas, in one month. Amazing and inspired.

We have just endured four years of one of the most chaotic administrations in the history of our Nation. This morning I happened on this program. The short prelude or symphonic intro was magnificent and immediately gained my attention; then the tenor solo, "Every Valley shall be exalted, every hill made low" and the beauty of this voice, and the conviction of his sung words, just released a flood of tears that I could not contain, and somehow the tensions were released, and joy, just pure joy flooded my soul. No other way to describe it, absolutely none.

Handel's "Messiah" is the masterpiece of all masterpiece's. Having seen it performed in person, I must say it stirs something inside of you when the entire audience stands during the singing of "The Hallelujah Chorus". Such reverence for the majesty of Jesus Christ. It reminds one of the scripture which says "Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father". Amen.

The custom of standing during the famous chorus only started because King George II rose during its performance, and every one else was obliged to rise as well. He was simply sore from having sat for an hour and a half. It would be nice if we could all enjoy the excellent music without invoking non-musical references in order to start tangential debates.

Today, I listened to this whole video while cooking in my kitchen. Sometimes I just had to stop and breathe in what I was hearing. I have always loved Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. I was in our small high school band, where I played the flute, and we played the Hallelujah Chorus one Christmas. We didn't play very well, but we made up for it with our enthusiasm. We did try very hard. The thing I remember most was that the audience stood when we played it. I think we played a little better when they stood. This music just lifted my soul! I listened to the whole 2 hours plus. I did take time to just sit and watch the video. The faces of the conductor, the singers, and even the orchestra, were just magical! You could tell they were so into the music, the moment, the whole performance! I found myself applauding with the audience at the end! Thank you so very very much for sharing this amazingly beautiful video! The whole world should be made to hear this! It would magnify their spirits and souls! Handel was truly blessed by God. Thank you! Thank you!

The reason the audience stands for The Hallelujah Chorus is because when King George heard the first strains he stood and stayed standing through the entire piece. Thereafter it is the practice to stand out of respect and awe of what they are witnessing.

Sometimes it’s music from the 1960s (The Beatles) to the music of John Denver, but I love Classical music and opera equally as much. To me, music, like this beautiful piece here, is balm for the Soul. Wish we could play The Messiah loud enough for all the World to hear it. We need this Angelic music so badly right now. Blessings and Peace to you, Jan. ☮️❤️

It is very good indeed. I have seen live performances of the full oratorio that exceed even this in sections and there may not be recordings of them. Also in reviewing recently some others such as conductor Trevor Pinnock and Gardner ( versions are available on YT ) that both have merit and some excellent sections, it is clear to me that The Word of YHWH is truly living and active, sharp and powerful. This allows for newness and annointing in this timeless music that exceeds our understanding. The Word is truly forever and ever. This is an awesome and mysterious component of God, so that I no longer believe that there is any single version of The Messiah that is supreme. We will have our favorite (s), but clearly Father will be exalted in each performance of Messiah. There are many versions that I certainly do not care for, but I am likely not right in how I perceive these. His Word will accomplish that which is intended. The intent of the listener is varied and is of great importance in receiving these heavenly sounds. May you be richly blessed, even and especially in those times of bitter waters, trials and testings. Bryan

I sung the Hallelujah Chorus in a Christmas cantata at church, back when I could still reach the "rafter notes" in the soprano part. That's been many years ago. This is the first time I've listened to the entirety of Handel's Messiah. Wow! Is it a complex work! Beautiful! I'm not really a musician, but my mother is, and I had to call her and discuss it. As beautiful as the music is, the self-evident joy in the faces of the singers and musicians makes this performance all the more wonderful.

I cannot get enough of this inspiring performance! As I read my brothers comment below, my heart is broken for him and yet I hear his faith and I can hear the love of Jesus come from his heart. I pray that he is experiencing the joy of the Lord and the love of our Father as we enter this holiday season. What a blessing that our Lord inspires composers and artists to express their faith in such a way as this and gives us a small window into heaven! What music will be there!! Thank you for this amazing conductor who shows his love of his work and the incredible soloists and chorus! It was sheer joy!!!

This just goes to show that you do not always need a 500 member choir to present a magnificent performance. I love the tempo here. Some seem to drag on and put the audience to sleep. Not this one. It moves along without sacrificing any musical technicalities. I can always tell when it is good performance when I originally wanted to see how they the orchestra does and I end up listening and watching the whole video. Bravo guys!!!

I would venture to say that it is better with a smaller choir - more delicacy. I love this version, the singers are great with great diction; I just find it a bit too fast for my taste, especially that it is the same tempo all through. I think parts like the pastoral pieces for example, could be a little slower

Strongly agree on the tempi and dynamics as performed! Love the brilliance of tenor, soprano, and bass timbres, and then that glorious, rich contralto. Very exciting!
