H&K Mk23 SOCOM .45 Development

/ forgottenweapons
Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The H&K Mk 23 pistol was developed in the 1990s for the US Special Operations Command and US Navy. The goal was to produce an "offensive handgun" that could serve as a primary armament for a special forces operator as well as a backup arm. It was required to be no more than 12 inches long, fit a suppressor and aiming module with laser and illumination options in both visible and IR spectrum, have at least 10-round magazines, chamber .45 ACP (specifically a 185gr +P loading), and pass a 30,000 round endurance test.
Only two companies were able to supply acceptable initial pistols; H&K and Colt. The Colt pistol failed to pass the 1st phase testing. H&K presented a gun based on the recently-developed USP design, was ultimately chosen as the project winner; adopted as the Mk 23 pistol in 1996. The testing this pistol went through during development is really quite remarkable.

"That pistol you have is a SOCOM. It's a 45-caliber Offensive Handgun designed for the American Special Ops Command. With twelve rounds of 45 ACP's, it has outstanding stopping power. The SOCOM has a minimum service life averaging over 6,000 rounds, and has a five-round group capacity that extends within a 1.4-inch radius. It's a bit large, but the SOCOM is a gun you can trust. It also comes equipped with a laser aiming module. A suppressor can be attached to the SOCOM to silence gunshots. You should try to find one." -Iroquis Pliskin. (Solid Snake)

These are only heavy (for a full sized service handgun) once the extra kg+ from the can and "sighting module" are added. Fucking giant pistol, yeah... but they shoot incredibly well. Don't have a SOCOM, but I have USP45T, and even with +p+, the recoil impulse and muzzle climb are what I consider mild, the buffer spring makes a major difference. Trivia: Iirc, they're not only +p and +p+ rated, but can fire .45 Super (assuming one can *find* ammo), and in my experience, it'll eat it all w/o so much as a hiccup. Still overpriced, tho...

It's crazy that the Mk23 gets so much criticism for its size considering the engineering requirements of the contract. Imagine putting a long list of requirements on the design of a weapon that literally required it to basically be a tank and then going "nah, it's too big so it's impractical".

I had an Airsoft replica when I was 17 or so(in 1999 or 2000), shot a real one a few years later, and am finally planning on getting one. Breaking out the old Airsoft MK23, I don't find it much clunkier than my Beretta 92FS. It's got a higher bore axis, but I recall the shooting experience was very similar to a polymer-framed 9mm. In my eyes it's an incredible piece and I'm looking forward to some range time with one.

I have one of these in my safe, and the thing is an absolute horse. I mean ENORMOUS. Big enough to rival a Desert Eagle in size. Definitely not meant for a small handed shooter and no way could you ever conceal one on the street unless you're wearing a parka. They're also very expensive. Mine came with a price tag of $2,200.00. However, it's not unlike a Model 29: very impractical to lug around, but an absolute blast to shoot (no pun intended). Very accurate, very durable, and has accepted any and every kind of .45 ACP I've chosen to feed it without a single malfunction. I certainly get a lot of questions when I bring it to the range, and the funny look I got from the guy behind the counter at the gun store when I asked if he could get me one was pretty memorable. If you live in the United States, and you fish with a fine net when it comes to firearms, you should give the Mk 23 some consideration. They're a hoot.

@@MellowFellowOfYellow I'd love to have a suppressor for mine (AND a LAM), but I freely admit to not being proactive in securing either. There's always that other seductive buy on a pistol...or a rifle (I'm a total sucker for M1 Garands)...or that sweet deal on 7.62 because my HK91's gotta eat too. You get the idea. The short version is that I always seem to find SOMETHING else I want to buy at this very moment and I'll set the cash aside and buy that pimp shit for my SOCOM one of these days, I swear to God... It's also equipped with a LAM (Laser Aiming Module) for nighttime combat. If you find a SOCOM suppressor, you can equip that, too. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) based their MK23 SOCOM pistol on the Airsoft version from Tokyo Marui. Tokyo Marui used the Phase II model MK23 as the base, then they attached the box type LAM from the Phase I model, then the KAC suppressor from the Phase III model. So the MGS MK23 is basically a hybrid.

They used the Phase 1 laser with the final production suppressor, even the photo of the gun they used in the final results screen of the game has the original laser module. Also interesting that the original prototype of the MK 23 had the locking slide mechanism that would end up on the tranq guns in the later games of the series

I was able to tour the "grey room" when I went to HK for MP5 armorer training over 20 years ago. Very impressive. The MK 23 was/is very overengineered, and was essentially obsolete by the time it was issued. It is also as big as a desert eagle, and the holster issued with it is a POS. To make matters worse, it was developed prior to "rail standardization", so you were pretty much limited to HK proprietary lights and lasers due to its weird accessory mounting arrangement (via the hole in the trigger guard). The Mk23 as you said was designed primarily by input of the SEALs. This is what you get when you let those guys make a wish list for everything they want in such a gizmo. The most positive aspect of the MK23 is that it became the "start point" of the USP series, which of course is a pistol that is actually useable as a traditional handgun. That said, the MK23 is very accurate, and I was issued one as late as 2006, although I never actually "used" it for mission purposes (we all opted to carry our 9mm pistols instead) - I did enjoy shooting it from time to time at the range at the firebase.

Fun fact : the Metal Gear Solid MK23 is based on the phase 2 model, since the staff based its design on the Tokyo Marui MK23, an airsoft reproduction of the phase 2 model. [edit] Actually I got that wrong. The Tokyo Marui MK23 has been released in 2002, so it was 4 years after the release of Metal Gear Solid 1. Tokyo Marui probably released the MK23 as a reference to Metal Gear Solid 1, not the other way around. I still believe it explains why the game uses a FAMAS G1 and a PSG1 (they were both available as Tokyo Marui airsoft guns even back then), but I guess they wanted the "main character gun" to be something special.

Harasho...good! You found a SOCOM. That's a Special Operations Command pistol. It's a .45 caliber pistol with plenty of stopping power. It's also equipped with a LAM (Laser Aiming Module) for nighttime combat. If you find a SOCOM suppressor, you can equip that, too. That pistol was designed specifically for use by special forces, so I think it will be useful. Some people find it a little heavy and hard to use, but it shouldn't be a problem for you.
