Here is Roz' final attempt at singing this song. This is not the take that was released on CD in 2005.
From her autobiography, "Life Is A Banquet." At first I was only to act the part; Rose's singing was dubbed by a professional with a big trained voice. When I heard it, I got sick. "It isn't me," I said. "I'm bad, but I can't stand to hear that. Everybody knows I don't sing operatically, it throws the balance off." Warner Brothers agreed and rescored the picture, and I sang my own part. People still say that I didn't, but that's Roz, and nobody else, as Rose on the soundtrack of Gypsy.

Though she had starred in the stage musical "Wonderful Town" ten years earlier, Russell's voice didn't have the power required for the score. After listening to her recording of the numbers, even Russell had to agree that she would need to be dubbed, though she would deny this, too, in her memoirs. Russell's voice was used only for the patter portions of the numbers. For the real singing, Broadway belter Lisa Kirk, who had starred in the original stage production of "Kiss Me, Kate," modulated her voice to a near perfect match for Russell's.

She led them all. Such a funny & talented actress but the voice....
Judy Garland could have really done this role amazingly.

They wanted to cast her, but Jack L. Warner wouldn't have it, citing difficulties on A STAR IS BORN.

I don't really agree. It would hurt the show for the audience to think "Poor Mama Rose, all that talent wasted! She should have been a star!" That's not the character.

I heard that's why the creators of the musical hate this movie so much: because they were promised Judy, who missed out on a lot of great work during the last decade of her life because she was so unreliable.

@@topogigio2879 Uh, that's the reason Stephen Sondheim wrote the song for the finale.
Not half bad, in fact almost good enough. If they'd had the technology there is today, they could have ironed out the rough notes. And as usual, there's more character in Roz Russell's own voice, although Lisa Kirk was a darn good match for a voice that's not easy to sound like.

I do think acting-wise she was the best Mama Rose of them all.
Hello- I have always been under the impression that Russell did in fact sing all of Mama Rose's songs but for the round edges and high notes Russell's vocals were augmented by Lisa Kirk.

Absolutely not. There was no blending at all. Lisa sang everything except for "Mr. Goldstone" and the first half of "Rose's Turn".

@@lostvocals8 I wish Warner Bros. had let Roz's own voice stay in place for the entire Rose's Turn soliloquy. It's my feeling that the message in the lyrics should be the focus there, not the "quality" of the singing voice.

@@lostvocals8 It’s all a matter of opinion, I guess, and in the end the voice was dubbed so I guess the smart thing for me to do is appreciate the film for the artwork it was and is and not wish it had been done differently.

Judy Garland would have made Annie Get Your Gun a classic but she was too ill to complete. I can see her as Mama Rose BUT not like Liza Minnelli! I was always surprised Liza never did the role on Broadway. All the lesser performers did it that I won't mention BUT Tyne Daly was very good in her take..... Most of the rest mediocre!
