GX CS2 Thermal Test on 20 minute run What can you expect? Yong Heng Hot Rod Shop Target Forge

Join me in this episode as I take an instrumented CS2 through a full cycle. Pressure from 4000psi to 4500psi for 20 solid minutes. I tortured this little pump and it performed GREAT! What are the takeaways? The thermal coupling between the high pressure piston and the cast aluminum case is very good, the cooling capacity is very good on the cylinders. The motor gets a bit hot, and cools a bit slowly, but was never an issue during my test. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

    Fascinating test! The results and your conclusions make me feel even better about my CS3. The temperature on my low pressure head after running my compressor for about 6 minutes to fill my 3000 psi gun is 38 deg. C. I will have to take some measurements at the other locations, but I will have to do it one at a time as I only have one thermcouple.

    I have a CS3 and it’s been fairly bullet proof so far. I’ve used it 3-4 times per week for the past 6 months. I just fill my guns only. No large tanks. Run time on my 480cc tank from 150B to 250B is about 7 minutes. I usually cut it off and give it a 5 minute cool down if I am filling from empty. Takes 2 cycles if tank is empty. Just opened it up today and cleaned out old grease and put new in. Service is easy as well.

    I've had a CS2 for a little over a year now it has 12.2 hrs on it and just keeps going, I have cleaned out the lower ck valve a couple of times as it get some grease in it after awhile. One thing I do that might interest some I feed it ONLY PURE DRI Nitrogen at about 6-8 psi so that is all that goes into the pump and my guns no chance of detonation no Oxidizers no water no co2 .I feed the nitrogen in through the handle as that is 1/2" pipe thread under the perforated cap. the highest temp I've seen is 109F at both the top center an at the bottom block for the outlet. Bill I have found with my no touch laser temp gauge that where you put you probes was not in the peak hot spot for the head right in the middle of the G on the head.

    Hello Terry, thank you for your comment. Have you looked at my thermal imaging? I think that probe location was great for the answer I was looking at. With a FLIR image I think the aggregate data is much better than a point based non contact measurement. What I wanted to see was the delta between the peak, which is on the HP cylinder wall vs. the overall casting. Glad you have had good luck with nitrogen, it is a great solution, why are you contaminating it with a compressor? What pressure are your bulk tanks at? I can tell you the inside of my guns look great and I am fortunate to live in an area with a pretty low RH.

    I have the CS2 and love it. Another airgun friend also recently picked up a CS2 and he also likes its performance. Question- are you using and type of thread sealer between the Adapters on your fill hose? If not, what do you use to avoid air leaks?

  • @TargetForge

    @TargetForge

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question Ed. I'm planning an episode to talk about connection types and what should and should not be used, where and when. The ONLY time teflon thread tape should EVER be used is on tapered threads. The purpose of the tape is more about lubrication as the two tapered surfaces are driven together as they are tightened allowing the threads to fit so tightly that they do not leak. This will not work on a BSP thread as they are parallel and are NOT meant to provide the seal. They are typically either face sealed (nylon washer, o-ring) or sealed at the top of the thread with a dowty seal. On the CS2 the fitting that threads into the head first is a parallel thread that seals on the face of the fitting. Do not use sealant here it may squeeze into the fitting and end up in your guns regulator eventually. The next joint is a compression ferrule joint to the hose. The only thing the thread does is crush the flare into the mating surface, no sealing is done on the threads, tape here is really silly. As delivered none of these joints require sealant and using it will likely cause more problems than it will solve. NPT threads get sealant, not flare, BSPP, or parallel metric fittings. I know everybody thinks teflon tape fixes leaks, but they often fail to understand how the seal is actually designed. Hope this helps!

  • @TargetForge

    @TargetForge

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your comment Michael! I know it is bad form to respond to a question with a question, but here it goes. What do you need the pony bottle for when you can fill your guns directly with the CS2? They are pretty close in size and the the CS2 can yield seemingly unlimited fills to whatever pressure you need. I suppose you might just not have a power source where you shoot, maybe you backpacked in, who knows. Can you fill a small bottle with the CS2? Sure. That first fill from empty might take a while, so be mindful of the 20 min "ON" limit, if it's cool where you are running, you could probably take it to 30min (less than 75F). Refills should not be a problem I use mine for testing all the time. In fact in the video you just commented on.

    I typically don't fill larger bottles from dead empty. My use case has me filling them at ~150bar and if I'm filling a gun directly (480cc), which they are really designed to do, I usually stop at 250bar. This test actually had it go from 4000 psi to 5000 psi pretty quick, in fact I had to constantly vent it to get a 20 min run.

  • @wruehl

    @wruehl

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'm assuming you mean to vent the motor heat? I don't really think that is needed if you are using this for it's intended application. Do you mean the CS2 vs the L2? Both can run on 115VAC the only difference is that the L2 runs at 18VDC vs the CS2 at 13.8 VDC. The windings on the L2 are different to allow the operating power and RPM to be effectively the same, so the fill rate would be comparable. I personally like the CS2 due to its ability to be powered by my vehicles (as shown in my other videos) where the LS can only run an either the AC supply, or the Makita tool battery. I have come up with a way to make a hybrid of the two and I'm testing it right now. Be sure you are subscribed for more info on that!

    I do not believe so. A CS3 is the same pump as the CS2 with a layer of "features" on top that often fail and leave the user stranded. Add to that an enclosure that adds restriction to cooling air and you have the reasons for my disdain for the CS3. It only takes 6 min to fill my 480cc guns, I can stick around and watch the system, not a bad idea if you have ever used Chinese autostop units.

    You still have the option of lugging around a large Carbon Fiber bottle and do your refills with that, but a quality one is almost 2X what a CS2 costs AND you still need a way to fill that when you get home. The CS2 offers portability and usability in a LOT more situations. Hence, me calling it the Yong Heng Killer. For me I can use the sun, my truck, my ATV, and a DeWalt battery to fill my guns.
