I believe the lid is meant to be used as a base to stop the feet getting filled with dirt in soft terrain.

I've had one of these for twenty years, they are fantastic. The netting disappeared years ago, still a great toilet seat over a hole. And, as long as no one asks around the campsite, it's a great table as well. :)

Apparently there was a collective sigh of relief among Andrew's subscribers of a weaker disposition when Gwen said: "I'm not going to show you how it actually works..." Seriously though, not many outdoor, adventure, camping or overlanding-related channels are brave enough to cover this subject.

Excited to see this talked about. Although I prefer a squat on the ground in the bush, I use this same setup with my wife and daughter and love it. It’s particularly good paired with a rapid pop up shelter. We use 3 gallon compostable kitchen bags, tie off, then drop that in a biodegradable dog waste bag, also tied off. That goes in our normal rubbish bag which lives in a 20 liter rubberized roll top bag. We’ve gone multiple days in the heat and no odor in the truck. And if you do prefer to bury your waste, but have trouble squatting, no bag required. Position over a hole and you’re all set-well, unless you struggle with IBS. Best use a bag then. The combo was indispensable during our month long journey during peak Covid this summer. It was always loaded with a clean bag and ready to go.

This is a great toilet! My wife and I have been using this for years. Good tip, if you are remote camping take out the net and dig a hole like you would normally and set the toilet over the hole... you get the rest lol.

I’ve been using the same one for years without fail. A bush fix you may try Andrew is taking a knife or box cutter blade and trimming down those pesky retaining tabs or simply removing them completely. You really don’t need them. Also, I filled the feet with Sikaflex to block them filling with clay. Cheers.

Good on ya' for discussing this topic. It's easy to sort out "something" but it's not easy to find advice on the *best* way to go (pun intended). When I was building my Disco, I nearly ended-up designing my entire interior to accomodate a Thetford Qube, which would have made all the storage boxes so tall that it'd be impossible to sit on top of them, inside the vehicle. By luck, I found a no-name brand portaloo which was only ~20cm tall and allowed me to completely re-think the way I built the vehicle. Might seem like a small issue but, when you've got a wife/kids with you, a loo is almost as important as a bed, cooker or water supply so anything that minimises the "footprint" it inflicts on a vehicle is a good thing.

  • @TWX1138

    @TWX1138

    3 жыл бұрын

I've been mulling a design for a Nissan D40 Frontier (Navara) with the 6' bed, and I'd argue that the loo is even more important when dealing with a wife and kids. Having a toilet is the single biggest barrier to using trucks sold as mid-size in North America as some kind of multi-day expeditionary vehicle, because none of the slide-in offroad campers equipped with usable bathrooms will fit on these trucks. All of the traditional camper manufacturers are still using heavy materials like E-glass fiberglass, no one has switched over to lighter materials like s-glass fiberglass, carbon fiber, or cabon/kevlar composites, so their full-featured campers are simply too heavy for trucks with a true half-ton payload capacity. The interiors available for campers weighing under 1200lb look really nice, but I'd rather give up having a full-featured kitchen if it meant having a usable bathroom with at least a toilet and a closable door. I can cook outside with everyone around me.

I've just used a similar one for the first time last weekend, ny, usa. The bags had the powder already in them. Was way easier to use than expected and as was noted in the video, each person was responsible for removing there own bag and installing the fresh bag for the next user, removing the need to fumble around while having to go.

I've got one that I've used for six years. Compact and works really well. I have bags, but usually just dig a hole and place the toilet over the hole. I'll tell you, I have pooped in some really beautiful places! When I camp I scout out the most scenic, most wonderful place that I can poop. My favorite - Big Bend National Park in Texas, very remote camp spot, sitting in the desert at dawn watching the sun come up over the distant mountains - just gorgeous.

Thanks for the topic and I agree it can be a real pain finding a solution. A similar product from bio bag is well worth considering. It uses compostable bags (which you can bury with the mandatory campfire ash on top) or carry in sealed bin if park doesn't allow burial. The seat they make is simpler still and doesn't have the design faults either. Be interested to know what the jelly making chemical is though???

We have been using Porta Potties for as long as I can remember. We stopped using them with chemicals a ages ago so that the waste can be dumped in most toilets or just buried. Yes, they do take up a bit of room but I just don't feel safe sitting on something with 3 legs. We did give this system a go some time back and it will be great for most people but my weight makes me very wary of them.

We found a similar product as we had the same hangup about carting around a literal box of liquid sh!t - the "biotoi". Its a bit less finicky as the bag goes over the whole thing and legs fold out very easy but also less sturdy than yours by the look and no chemicals so there are smells (might see if i can add some) but we solved that with a small airtight bucket from bunnings. Both go in the dirty gear bag on the back wheel. The same mob does full compostable bags so you can throw it in a drop toilet or justthe rubbish.

Have a look at the Bivvy Loo too. For us in a 109 we just wouldn’t have the space. Bivvy loo was the perfect choice for us. Does the same trick but is easier to handle in small spaces.

Donegal Overlanding I have a porta potty that lives on the back of the ute. It’s transformational to the point I think these should be mandatory for the bush...

You need to get a POPALOO. They are much better and no tools needed to pack away ,and more compact when stowed away in its carry pack.

I'm just curious but why don't you just dig a hole and then fill the hole when your finished ?

Hopefully all the plasticbags will find the way to the disposal. Plastic, chemicals, and jelly is no sustainable solution. Digging a hole is the much better and cheeper way to manage your "bussiness". For the indoor use (e.g. travelling in Europe) there are some interesting solution with "compost-toilet" with ventilation and coconut fibres in Germany cold "bio-toi". No smell at all !! In the end you can use your "compost" for your plants. But much more expensive.

Why not use a 5 gallon bucket, pool noodle for the top. Or get a seat lid for the bucket and store everything inside. Less time to clean up and convenient. Just acthought

these things are great if you shit normal, if you are 1 of the few irritable bowel syndrome where are in the real scenario of hard to spray painting the shitter I would seriously recommend a blackwater tank for your piss and shit. something that uses something similar to kitty litter type solution can't really be stored in a bin noe can it be buried..

Sadly Not great for the environment though, more plastic bags and gelly chemicals going into landfill and kinda removes the point of the eco friendly loo roll. Alternatively you could dig a hole and use that over it, drop compost loo shavings afterwards to keep the smell away and then fill it in before you leave a location.... 😉👍

@@AlphGen Sure paper bag it. The point is we have 1 planet, those of us who love exploring it would like to see less plastic waste and wildlife affected by it. No need for the "sigh" buddy

@@AlphGen Paper bag with some absorbent materials and the right chemicals would probably work fine. Keep it in a reusable sealed container for added security from spillage.

Hmm looks a bit complicated compared to the simple foldable one from BCF for $35 with bag attachment, that seems to be the stealth model. This is when its good to be a man because the world and trees are our urinal.
