I love when people critique my primaris models because my eight year old son painted them. If you are going to compare yourself to an eight year old, I’ll smile and nod- but in my head you are beneath my contempt hahaha

Bonus- they actually look great and have received lots of compliments, while they are missing some of the nuance and detail that comes with years of practice- for an 8yo? They are fantastic and I am very proud of them!

I have a longtime friend with paper-thin skin and he always critiques my work hard. He's not a very good painter but I always big him up for the effort he puts in as he does try. He doesn't have any motor control issues, perhaps patience. I never tell him this but I consider myself a much better painter, even through the fact he's commissioned me a few times. It gets kindof tiring showing him something I've put so much effort and time in, and the first thing out of his mouth is something in the same vein as "you missed this spot" or at best "Yeah that's nice", yet he has much more emotional reactions to other people's paintjobs, even ones at his own level. Just a negative nancy all around with anything hobby-related for me. Through other non-hobby stuff, I've come to suspect he just doesn't respect me as much as he does others, but that's another story. Stay self-aware and be good to your lads, lads.

It's like being at the gym and someone walks up to you starts telling you you need to lift this way to get a certain result and why the workout your doing is shit. Like dude, you don't know why I'm at the gym, maybe I'm not here to look like a body builder or an Instagram model, maybe I'm working out because I need certain things stronger, or maybe it's for medical reasons, maybe I'm not about to hurt myself or others so you should just mind your business.

Yep. yet if that person is somewhat normal, talks to you and becomes your friend, stays a gym buddy, and then over time gives those same tips but with your situation in mind, and helps lift you up and reach your goals? legendary behaviour. Same in the hobby. I'd take a person that has a laugh the whole day and isn't as good, than someone who is legit brilliant at painting but just sucks as a person. Who wouldnt? Those people make the whole experience worthwhile, not a punch in the throat.

yeah, when i did my education as a media artist, there was one girl that was similar to the guy in the second story. She was always asking everyone what projects/ ideas they have. She always responded with 'Oh, thats lame', Thats boring' and stuff like that, and in the end she had someothing similar and pretended it was her idea.

I haven't even gotten into the hobby yet because the barrier to entery is to high for right now (might just get a 3d printer) but from the horror stories of "the grey tide" just cleaning tables, there is worse out there. Grow a pair and a spine while you're at it and man up. Men need to be men again, we have lost our way. Thank you for your content. Funny story about stolen writing. It happened to me when I was in highschool. I was bored so I looked if anyone wanted to collaborate on like a comic. Found some indonesian/thai guy apparently he liked my writing. So he approached me which surprised me because his art was really good. He demanded I plot out a whole entry chapter for him and a rough outline of the whole story. I did then he just dissapeared, stopped posting on an account he was active on for months. Later I learned he won some contest with it, got serialized then immediately serialization got shut down. What I learned from that is that ideas are cheap writing skill is not. He stole my writing and won big on it he stole my idea and it fell flat on it's face. Also fuck artists. They are entitled pricks and will try to scam you, will outright lie to you etc.

Too right, I went to a video games expo in Madrid, Spain about 7 years ago and on some of the side stalls and I kid you not this girl was selling copied and plagiarized Disney merchandize, everything from Frozen to Goofy. When I asked her a simple question she blanked me, she had an evil stare which I'll never forget. I bet she thought I was from the Disney corporation noting my English accent !

This idea that armies need to be painted to a high standard is very much a fantasy/sci-fi concept. It definitely started with Games Workshop (and I don't think it was intentional, more a side effect of the studio armies in White Dwarf) but it's spread to all the communities of all the games that have spawned off the back of Games Workshop (Mantic, Infinity, Malifaux, Warmachine et al). You go and check out historical wargamers and look at their armies. If you look at some of the big historical wargaming tables at wargaming shows they are very, very impressive. Then look at the individual miniatures and they're generally a single coat of each colour (no shade, no highlight), a black/brown wash over the top and then a simple base mix to finish. They look AMAZING when viewed as a collective rather than as individual models and that is the true skill of painting armies; learning to paint things to look great as part of a bigger picture rather than worrying about how it might look on display in isolation. So for me, if someone has at least put the basic colours down, even if it's a bit messy, and done a bit of basing I'm totally happy because I'm looking at the table not the individual miniatures. I am currently going on a bit of a journey if trying to mass produce painted miniatures, quickly and to an average standard. I'm using all sorts of tricks, slapchop/Speedpaint, army painter quick shade dips. It's really interesting and a departure from what I would normally do.

@@rellikskuppin7417 I don't think the companies themselves push the quality aspect, I think it's sort if grown up in the community because obviously the White Dwarf studio aren't going to want to have high res photos of models with Paint just daubed all over them; That's hardly good PR. But because most fantasy and sci fi wargamers grew up on a diet of Warhammer, 40k and White Dwarf we've all tried really hard to match the pictures in the magazines. I think companies want you to paint your models but I don't think they're too bothered about the actual standard, hence the big push of contrast paints (and all the rival paint brands equivalents). I am fairly sure it's the community itself that (in general, not everyone in it) that has some bizarre expectation about how well something has to be painted. Get your basic colours and a simple base and get playing is what I say. Save the effort for centrepiece models and special characters.

Ah lord, trying to keep a high standard really screwed up my painting for years. It was slow, and I wasn't experimenting enough because of the pace. Learning to be okay with your jobs and lifting a standard over time, and learning techniques etc. I am painting a pretty fun scheme at the moment, and most of my models are getting to that table ready, with a few mistakes that can be touched up stage for this army. Its been completely different to other armies i've painted, had to learn a bunch more colour theory, but also, I've had to purposely use some techniques I'd normally not enjoy. I've been leaving on extra wash, because the whole army is themed in that jungle/mud style, and it makes everyone look like they've been stuck in the rain. Now if you looked at a model on its own, it has a lot left to do, and a lot to call out. But you stick em on the table, or on the diorama, and it looks sweet as hell, if i can say so myself. the high standards are nice for models that are real centerpieces, or real eye catchers, or a model that costs a lot and you want to spend that time on it. Some people only paint too, which is a little different I spose, and all power to them, but since I painted an empire army, i've really learned to appreciate that a little bit of mess really disappears on a table. you can always go back to it. now i have actual painted armies on the battlefield, and there's always more plastic to paint, or models to touch up. That being said, I LOVE browsing galleries or events and seeing the absolute beasts of painting out there. So many talented people out there, love to see tabletop is going strong.

Never lent anyone any figures, but if I could pile up all the books I've lost over the years by lending them, then...I'd have a pile of books. 😢

That GW manager should be another recipient of the 4 flat tires surprise award.

I think unsolicited advice is just a nerd thing in general. Okay, we're dealing with a stereotype here. But how many Sheldon types have you run into who see something they think is a flaw and they can't relax until they point it out? "I hate when it's like THIS, I'm only happy when it's like THAT!" It's what happens when there's extremely high levels of conscientiousness in someone's personality, and a lot of geek types are like that.

If I wanna talk about someones models, I always open up with a compliment, then don't even go back to it. I might ask about a technique they used for something i like, or something like that. You let them open the critique of their models. At the end of the day, its a hobby, and its for everyone to have fun. When it comes to gameplay, RP is way more fun than playing objectives usually :P

How some one gets their money is unimportant. Making a private sale without having the cash in-hand is just willful ignorance. Sounds like all the chat about the bloke being on the dole was a diversion away from his own poor judgement.

If u live at home ie with Yr mom save half or all or most of your 1st dole payments for 3 to 4 moth then beging buying some models job seek twice a day then paint evey model you buy to box art standards it takes all day then you can stockpile dole money and models

My dad recently died of cancer (as have a few other close relatives) and I have no problem with his use of the word whatsoever. People need to develop thicker skins.

@@gadushholl3469 the problem is not the comparison, it's people's tendency to abbreviate everything they say; ie a descriptive like "cancerous" becomes objective "cancer". To be fair, we can find your inability to control your own feelings of offense pretty disgusting too, especially when you feel the need to tell everyone how mean they are for it. Self-reflect.
