I have sent and replied to many polyglots. I have posted over many websites enough to fill a 300 page book. What have I written. The continuing failure of the clear majority of people to learn or acquire a new language. I failed over 13 years to be able to be conversationally fluent in Tagalog. I failed at a cost of $5,000 to learn through conventional tutoring. I then failed with 1,500 hours of storytelling though I keep have them read. After a few months nothing improved using LingQ. Of course the cost for storytelling and LingQ just ads to the disaster. I stopped speaking to those not helping here in Metro Manila. My 25 year relationship is also damaged. I stopped attending Filipino gatherings of any kind since it was extremely depressing ending up alone among others not translating or helping me learn or acquire. So what is the secret I am convinced exists that polyglots are not telling to help acquire a new language? I was not a math major but when I returned to college it struck me why others just were defeated and struggling with algebra. My discussion with them about personal feelings of math then teaching the most difficult concept simply solved the problem. But this language is a severe problem. I must state that I see the Tagalog language culture as severely broken. Engaging them in talk is impossible. They giggle and ridicule. So that is one factor encouraged by polyglots not possible here due to thus childish and rude action. It just creates humiliation and anxiety for me.

what i love about xiaoma is he learns the language AND the culture. whether it be the most popular drink etc and has genuine conversations w people, unlike other youtubers who go up to people and assume their ethnicity and just start talking to them. the fact that xiaoma actually cares and learns is what sets him apart from other polyglot creators.

imho some have been cool and real too but - just like anything else: xiao didnt start doing this because it was a popular thing to do w/ your channel. he started the idea, and his heart is in it alot of ppl out there tho - just like the rapppers who completely mimic whatever is popular this week - or the 1000 prank channels out there now - etc. like...... they just see something is getting views and try to get those views. i truly believe if youtube or even cameras didnt exist xiao would still be doing this because you can tell he clearly has his heart in it

One of the things I appreciate most about Xiaoma's video's is how he can find every culture of the languages he speaks nestled within NYC. How amazing is it that so many people from differing countries can live and work alongside each other despite their cultural differences. It truly makes me proud to to be American. 🇺🇸 🤝🇬🇾

As a Caribbean person this made me so happy! We generally understand each other within the Caribbean (once you get past the accents) if you speak an English Creole language as our creoles fall within the same Caribbean Creole language family. Thank you for shedding light on our way of speaking! OMG he even says the word New York like a Guyanese LOL

There's a fair number of people of South Asian descent in Suriname as well, even though it isn't part of the Commonwealth. I'm pretty sure most of them speak an English creole (in Guyana, Suriname, and the English-speaking Caribbean), but there's also a group of closely-related language varieties called Caribbean Hindustani, that at least some people continue to speak.

@@MBSyd_HS99 On the whole, absolutely. But it also has a lot of speakers of an English creole, for reasons that are historical. They weren't assimilated to the Dutch-speaking population because the Dutch weren't really inclined to teach native people in their colonies Dutch. That's why there are few or no Dutch-speakers in Indonesia, for example. And presumably what happened with the South Asians was that they learned the English creole instead of Dutch, and where they lost Hindustani as a native language, they shifted to Sranan Togo (the creole in question) instead of Dutch. Though they probably are able to speak Dutch at this point.

Funny, my wife is Guyanese and we had saltfish and bake last night. One of my favorite of her dishes. I've had some good times is Guyana, as well as "Little Guyana" which we mostly just refer to as Richmond Hill. As for Venezuela, they've been wanting a piece of Guyana for longer than we've been alive, and it's not going to happen...especially considering that Guyana is an American ally that has recently uncovered significant new oil reserves. There's a very old song about the relationship between the two countries called Not One Blade of Grass; the title says it all!

Funny you start by admitting Venezuela has been calling for it's rights for many years and then mention the Americans.... Guam, Philippines, panama, Nicaragua, cuba, Guatemala, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan. The people had enough, in Venezuela we don't care who comes, Guyana can call superman if they want, we also don't care since we're not calling for war, but we mean to defend our territory. Guyana also has border pretentions on part of Suriname (Tigri region) , they robbed part of Brazil... so the expansion policy is clear (British empire doctrine). Suddenly they get oil and gas in our sea and forget our history as neighbors, how Venezuela helped Guyana when they where starving, even way before the Chavez era in Venezuela. They suddenly forgot our past agreements on looking to negotiate a solution on the dispute (1966 - signed by both parties) and started exploiting our resources with big oil companies, oh but now they be "poor me I'm the little one being attacked by evil big Venezuela" 😂😂😂 Venezuela starts on the Essequibo River

I grew up with a dude from Guyana and their culture is awesome. Some of the best food, he use to make these things that were boiled egg inside of a potato ball, then fry them. They hit different. Dude had a rough life though, had scars from being chopped with machetes and hit with bricks, hadd some crazy ass stories.

I am Guyanese and Ive lived in the uk so why you having a problem? I suspect you are trying to speak Guyanese creole to them, which you probely dont know much about, you should just speak standard english to them or Guyanese english which the best in the world compared to upper class english in the uk but with a different accent. one thing you dont know about Guyana, is not every one likes to speak Guyanese creole and we dont usually address strangers in creole,but in Guyanese english. Creole is for friends and family,

That's one of the most interesting videos I've seen. As a Brazilian who works with English language it was nice to perceive the African Phoneme over English language. Creole languages are certainly a beautiful cultural heritage.

I wish you'd do a collab with Trevor Noah about how language can break down barriers. People seem to be so open when you can talk to them in their own language.

I did a lot of work with musicians from the Carribean when I was in high school and quickly picked up the various dialects of Guyanese, Bajan, Jamaican and Antiguan Creole. Enjoyed watching this, I always thought it easy to understand but came to realize it wasn't so intuitive to others. The people of those regions are true salt of the earth, have been through so much but would give a stranger the shirt off their back. The rest of us could learn a lot from them.

I know VERY little about Guyana (and absolutely wish to learn more), and I had no idea that so many of its people have Indian heritage. I didn't expect that from South America. Creole and "pig" language (is that the correct term?), are really fascinating to me. I'd love to learn more about the languages and the people who speak them. There's not very many people from Creole speaking countries here in Australia, or at least, where I am. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard the languages outside of videos, so I hope to be able to learn more through people, and content creators such as yourself, Arieh!

Colonization. British shipped Indians everywhere, in carribean mostly Trinidad and Guyana. They brought over to cut cane after the Blacks were shipped there. Look up the word coolie as they are known but very derogatory term

As a first gen American born, this is hilarious. Been home a few times as a kid.

i started using your A.I. teaching class just to try it out. i thought it was gonna suck to be honest (no offense) but it actually works pretty good! i speak chinese, icelandic, and greek, so i was interested to see how it differed from how i actually learn. it is pretty immersive so far, and speaks mostly in spanish. i’m learning more spanish to better communicate with my girlfriends mexican family, and for work, and it gives me new words and phrases that help with both. i recommend trying it even for a month, i can see how it wouldn’t work for everyone, but i enjoy it so far.
