@@surveytestmoney2550uhh i think this was more referring to the overabundance of plastics and deficit of natural shells (which are probably sitting in gift shops). they aren't calling us amateurs, they're calling us colonizers as they had home security for thousands of years and NOW have to live in plastic crap

  • @DimityPockets

@surveytestmoney2550 Actually, this shell update is fairly recent as the amount of plastic in the ocean increases. The only reason hermit crabs are resorting to trash is because they’re pushed to desperation, not because it’s mere instinct to prefer trash. It is true that humans need housing as well of course.

He did say suitable shells are getting difficult to find, so I can imagine he doesn't want to just leave them to go to waste in some kid's crappy glue-covered fingerpainting (I was guilty of using shells and sea materials in art when I was little and lived on the coast, though I usually chose dissicated sand dollars and stuff).

This is absolutely fucking adorable. If I ever go to the beach, I'll be sure to not pick up any of the shells that could one day possibly be someone's home. Thanks for making this video, I didn't know about this and now I do

Fun fact! Hermit crabs also have a system where if one crab finds a new shell, all the smaller crabs will line up behind them from biggest to smallest and basically trade their old shell down to the smaller crab.

@@1n_th3_f10w3rs I mean, things like snails and such hatch with shells. Also, hermit crabs aren't born from a womb like mammals. The female holds the eggs along her abdomen until they're ready to hatch. It's honestly a much more easily made leap in logic to believe they're born with shells than not given many other species.
