I feel like the CEO of Blockbusters overheard Gus, and internalized the idea that the Internet was stupid and pointless.

Well that moron at Hollywood video owned Game crazy. The only retail store that could have competed with game stop for new and used games had they fleshed out the business model. Really screwed the pooch there.
I respect the fact that Gus admits how wrong he was and is prepared to be wrong about literally anything that happens to be waiting for him in the future.

@@tnecniw Largely because of lazy and/or uncaring people not disposing of it correctly and/or lack of proper established methods of doing so. But in some regions, bottled water is basically the only safe-to-drink water that those people can have. Having basically-guaranteed clean water is a first-world blessing, but there are times that even that fails and then it's either bottled water... or risk extreme sickness and/or death.

My dad was given a blackberry phone from his work. I thought he was the height of coolness!
I had a moment similar to this. Back in 2011 or so when "Let's Play" was a somewhat common term used in place of a "walkthrough", but not in the common vernacular like it is today, a few of the people I watched live streamed once in a blue moon. They used websites such as "LiveStream" and "Ustream" more often than not. Twitch existed, but wasn't THE go to streaming website at the time, I think at least. I thought to myself "this is a neat novelty, but that's all it'll be, a novelty". Now here we are 10 years later where live streaming is a huge industry and subculture.
to be fair, people said the same thing about TV. "its not gonna take off. no one will have the time to sit around and stare at it"
I remember a conversation I had... must've been three years *AFTER* this, with someone who was insistent that ISPs would eventually have to start billing internet service based on both (a) bandwidth, and (b) distance, "just like long distance phone service". Not only did that not happen, but within _very_ few years long-distance phone charges THEMSELVES were already becoming a relic of the past.
@ferd617

The sad thing is where this happened: In the cafeteria at the backbone ISP we all worked for. The couldn't-have-been-more-wrong guy was one of our database people, with no real networking expertise, and boy did it show on that day.

2 years before I was born, Gus mad a very wrong perdiction. I have honestly never ever known an internet without pictures. I can't even say I know what a "vax lab" is... Wait... does this mean there were no ads?
Young Gus REALLY rocking the _Tron_ armor there. Disney called, they said Steven Lisberger wants His RESIDUALS!
Lmao he wasn't the only smart person who thought that
When I was in elementary school, our teacher wanted us to learn how to cite our sources on the internet. We all complained that it was stupid and we wanted to go to the library and use a book because it’s easier to do a bibliography and that we’d always be able to do that! So!! Why did we need to learn to do it online!!!

For some reason being in a gifted student class meant I was first to use the internet in 1996 while an early teen. First thing I looked up was Mortal Kombat, it was ALL pictures and it was glorious. My teachers made a terrible mistake.
Late in the 90's my teacher wanted to get us familiar with the internet. He thought it would be important. I thought the internet was pretty useless.
Takes a lot of humility to say that.

Even I was blown away using dial up on Win 3.0. It was slow but I knew it would change the world...and I thought for good until Facebook came out.
He had the same mindset as that one guy who said on the news that the internet was a fad and would die in a couple years.
"Stock in Microsoft? No thanks!"
Things that I thought were going to be a flash in the pan. Camera phones. Who wants this 10 byte camera on your phone when you can get a 10 megabyte camera for 100 dollars. Bottled water, who wants to carry this thing around when there is a fountain over there. Streaming services ( original Netflix). Yeah people are going to watch movies on their computers when they finally have TVs the size of their walls. This was before game systems offered internet.
NCSA Mosaic, the precessor to Netscape Navigator & Mozilla FireFox, and whose code Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer was based off of
The first time I used the internet I was in 6th grade, the only web browser was Internet Explorer, it was slow as hell but I didn't even realize how slow it was because I had zero basis for comparison and instantly recognized the potential of the internet, even realizing that the internet could eventually replace physical schools because everything you can learn in school is avalible online, you can even get direct one one communcation with teachers any time and set your own hours instead of having to get up at 6 am. I'm surprised it took till the covid lockdown to prove that online Schooling was a viable option... more surprised they opened regular schools back up. It doesn't really work for everyone, my kid also does physical therapy in school for his disability and that can't be done over a computer but they could limit physical school to just special needs.
I was the same way when Netflix came out. I thought, "renting movies for as long as you want, that sounds dumb, might as well keep it". Fast forward a few years later, blockbuster declares bankruptcy and Netflix is on top, jokes on me.

Oh my gosh, this is what I'm talking about. People who badmouth the innovation of mankind shouldn't be allowed to reap the benefits. The crazy part is that mankind constantly says things are impossible even though they KNOW mankind has a LONG history of just being wrong.
There was also the time Gus said Covid would be over in a month...
Thankfully for Gus, he wasn't the only person who thought the graphical internet was a dumb fad, lol... [I wasn't one of those dummies tho]
Sweet irony
It's going to be crazy in 20 years Tik Tok is going to be the next KZread, and everyone talking shit about it now is going to look back and regret it.

I dunno… Gus was slightly more wrong when he thought the “Lamborghini“ with a license plate that said ‘ZeroKids’ was actually a Corvette.
When I was 16 or 17, about 1994/5, my dad wanted to get me into a programming course. At that time there was big talk about the Internet in the media, but it was the usual right-wing luddite nonsense about it being a "pointless" and "meaningless" thing that no one would ever actually need. My dad had bought a ZX Spectrum in 1985, which was considered an outrageous extravagance for our family at the time. He used to program games on it from magazines and books. Later he bought me a second hand Atari 800XL. I never did start the programming course, it was far too expensive for our family, but I do now appreciate how aware he was. It's about the only thing he was willing to spend money on so it obviously meant something.
