@Drewblues Izzy was the creative guy of the band. He knew what sound was "cool". He is one of those guys who knows how to make a cool sounding riff. He had his thumb on the pulse of the Zeitgeist in the late 80s and knew what people wanted to hear. Hatfield and Lars had that talent too but lost is sometimes in the last 90s Sadly, Izzy was just one of the ingredients. Slash was the virtuoso and the cool guy and Axl was the voice and face of the band. The thing is this is why its called "a band" and not a solo act. Every single one of them broight to the table what was needed to make it perfect. Izzy was the creative genius who knew the cool riffs Slash was the cool virtuoso Axl was the frontman with the voice and looks Adler was the party animal and funny guy Duff was the glue and the diplomat of the band. He made sure everyone was getting along Once Adler left- The fun was gone. They didnt laugh anymore and became strictly business Once Izzy left, they didnt know how to write a proper and catchy riff for the life of them. Axl started an ego trip and there was nobody to keep him in check. Its not coincidence. Izzy also wrote the riffs of the first Velvet Revolver album and this is why it was successful. But also izzy on his own is not enough. He doesnt have the looks or the cool factor of slash. So although his solo work is appreciated by critics- he went nowhere. I think Axl needs to pay izzy his share and make him an equal part of the band if they are to come up with some new and exciting stuff. Otherwise they will be stuck in the same loop of playing their biggest hits from 3 decades ago.

Axl gets a lot of crap but people need to also remember that everyone else in the band had serious alcohol and drug problems, plus you had Izzy doing stuff like urinating in the aisle on an airplane flight! I’m not saying Axl didn’t get megalomaniacal or controlling but at the same time someone had to take charge.

Listen they were all fucked up...Izzy peeing on a plane just so happened to be a Fed offense...it could've been a tree in the park for all he knew. Yeah, not pretty but addiction never is. They ALL had their moments like the rest of us. No one defines him by that except you! The best thing he did was leave!! I would've done the same. In my opinion, Izzy was the backbone of that band. Ok, listen to Izzy's solo stuff & then listen to what Duff is doing right now...I hate to say it but Duff's act is absolute garbage. Duff could've been anybody, he just got lucky, no real talent there. Izzy's solo work is pretty damn excellent! Slash w/out a doubt is amazing & Axl suited his purpose but I still don't see Axl as anything other than someone who got lucky w/ the one album that Izzy basically wrote. I mean look at the new tour; they're running on empty. You couldn't pay me to go see "NOT IN THIS LIFETIME" Hey, if they did it to make a buck that's great, I'm all for that but don't pretend like anything after Izzy was relevant. I hate to bash anyone, they all had something to give but most of them were replaceable; Izzy was not!

It was after a party and there was a check for about 1 million dollars just lying on the floor. Somebody in the band had forgotten about it. There is a similar story from the early 90s where Izzy is interviewed and he has a check for 900k and he doesn't know where he should keep it. The interviewer jokingly says he can hold on to it for him, something Izzy considers for a brief moment. It may be Izzy himself who forgot the check and then wrote a song about it.

They don't have Izzy to write songs and how long are they gonna do the nostalgia thing .make new. Music for gosh sakes fuck Richard shreds allover Izzy. But he obviously can't write songs either ..they should have listened to Axl back in the day and had Zakk wylde in the band if they were gonna go this route it would've been awesome!

I wouldn't paint it black and white, like many people do - Axl was the one who destroyed the band by showing up late to shows and other controversies and megalomaniac things while Izzy and the rest were cool, talented, down to earth guys and so forth. They knew from very early on, Izzy much better than anybody else, that their singer was literally a diagnosed lunatic (a sociopath or whatever) with unpredictable mood swings and flights of temper who stays up at night and then sleeps until 6 p.m. But he had a unique voice, powerful stage presence and was committed to the cause, and they would put up with his "little tyrant" behaviour especially as they indulged their own vices. Axl probably later got a picture on his unhealthy mind that 1) all his friends were alcoholics and junkies, largely uninterested in anything else, and someone would eventually die of an overdose, 2) so it was him who carried the torch (and the stress of doing business and putting out great shows), especially as all the criticism and mockery were always aimed solely at him. The record company and managers were happy to milk the band while they were still functioning, they knew very well too it wasn't meant to last long and didn't do much to intervene. As Duff said in his book, if managers cared about anything else but their own commission money, they would put them all into treatment back in 1988. In my personal opinion, GnR were a beautiful, one of the kind thing that happened against too many odds and was largely doomed from the very start to end up ugly, so no need to heap blame on or whitewash anybody, let's enjoy the stories and the music.

I personally think another important thing to consider in regards to Izzy leaving the band is something a lot of people fail to understand: Izzy was newly clean off heroin and, at that time, staying clean on a GNR tour just wasn’t going to last forever, period. At that level of addiction, it is literally a life or death decision and, if the addict decides to make an honest, firm commitment to getting clean and actually staying that way, then sacrifices to one’s previous, enabling lifestyle will have to be made. People, places, and things have to change. It seems to me maybe a large part of his decision to leave was that, Axl’s behavior was just the icing on the cake that made the decision easier for him.

They all got equal enough credit on Appetite but he wrote most of it...even after on Illusions he wrote a great deal...one of the reasons he left...they stopped giving him equal credit even though he was pretty much founded the band & wrote soooo much of their stuff. Axl's head got to big for the room. I would've left too!! Rock on Izzy!!

Whole ocean of artists around but kept bumping into each other for performing on stage or creating music every now and then. Be it Izzy+Axl, Izzy+Duff, Slash+Duff... sprinkle of good ol steven adler in between.. GnR broke up in prime of their youth..but looks like all these guys never really got over each other! No matter what mad stuff they said at different points of time...

Not having a go at you man and I know a lot of people love Izzy , but i think he is overrated to be honest . He happened to be in the right place at the right time with Guns . I have seen where Izzy said something to the effect of writing 10 songs in 2 weeks with Duff .Well so what . I remember reading an interview many years with Blink 182 and Tom De Lounge or whatever the fuck his name is ,claiming they wrote 140 songs in 3 months after a tour .....If these goofballs had boiled down the 140 songs down to 4 songs they would have had 4 killer songs . Izzy should have done the same with his shit instead of burping out songs like a guy with a flu on a street corner lobbing out spitballs every 5 seconds

  • @scottyh1509

Izzy has released 11 solo albums since he left Guns, that's a very respectable output and most of the material is excellent. I dont think its fair to slag the guy for not releasing new material. Izzy left Guns in the middle of a world tour. I know he was miserable but you cant do that. Luckily the band was able to patch it up and finish but Izzy's exit could have really screwed the band financially and with the fans. Izzy made a mistake leaving like that and Axl could never trust the guy again, its pretty simple. When trust is absent there is no way to have a healthy relationship. Axl has never forgiven him for leaving like that. I wanted to see Izzy in the reunion shows but Fortus is a very good guitar player and he took his job, simple as that. (Also Izzy spilling his guts about Axl in high school is a little much, dude just bite your tongue and keep it to yourself)

Everybodys hating Axl again. Izzy left without saying goodbye and was a heavy drug user. Thats not a very reliable character. I am glad GNR have Richard Fortus now. he's a rocker, great guitar player but without any attitude. I miss Adler, although he probably would make it professionally anymore but I don't miss Izzy. His solo albums are ok but nothing indicates he alone is the great songwriter. Slash writes massive groovy kickass riffs but lacks the skill of incorperating them into a great rock drama, which is clearly Axls strength. Duff is a little bit in between. Axl is also a great lyricist and singer with a unique voice. Izzy iz an ok singer but no more.

When you're writing songs, it is common to use scratch lyrics or gibberish to figure out the melody and rhythm of the syllables. Scratch lyrics evolve into the final lyrics as you get more comfortable playing and singing the song. For example, “Tooth-pull-er” is 3-syllables like “You're-Cra-zy,” “My-Mich-elle,” or “Reck-less-Life.” The vowel sound in “Tooth” could evolve into “Move” like “Move-to-the-ci-ty.” When you're writing and demoing a new song then the 1st lyrics are frequently placeholders, which get replaced by the final lyrics.

Ya know, this collection of interviews could explain why GN'R (the real one) hasn't recorded original studio material since 1991. Izzy's post-2000 material is very one-note/samey. What if Izzy was the core of the writing team and/or inspiration from 1987-1991. He blew his creative load, and now the current GN'R can't move forward with a true sequel to UYI, because without Izzy, there's no songs. And even if Izzy wanted to write, the same fire just isn't there and wasn't post 10 years after leaving GN'R.

Izzy was always a free spirit, and didn't want to play massive stadiums, plus his arguments with Axl. In a way I don't blame Axl for making them sign contracts because Izzy was unreliable and just not show up, and they were all deep in the drugs, so Axl could see it all going downhill and was told by his lawyers to secure GNR. Maybe he did it the wrong way, but GNR exists today because of Axl. Izzy seemed to loose his momentum if what Dizzy said is for real

Most song writers will write about anything to keep up the skill set. So writing a song about going the dentist is an exercise for a professional song writer.

Man, people analyze this band to death & back! They made 2 albums! (Illusion was full of filler, and could have been one great record).

WAxl also said that Izzy didn't like having to make videos, I suspect Izzy wasn't very 'show businessy' and thought of himself as a pre MTV musician. Music Videos are quite lame, they were ok in the Appetite era, but once you got to the absurd spectacle of Axl at the Altar there was no going back to a pre UYI innocence.

AGS 15 - Yes the video was perhaps impressive on its own terms, but I always wondered what Slash thought when he was standing in the outdoors pretending to play guitar while a helicopter with a camera repeatedly flew over his head filming him. I doubt it was something he ever imagined when he began playing guitar. I am of the opinion that it was the sort of thing Izzy Stradlin hated.

One of the big problems Axl and Slash towards the end was bringing in Axl old Indiana buddy to play guitar, Paul Hues or something like that.

It's like baking a cake, you need all the ingredients. You can swap Steve & Matt and it still works, it tastes a bit different but it's still tasty. No Izzy, No GN'R. PERIOD.

Any chances of videos on Izzy's relationship with Tracii? Or Steven Adler? I find those to be more interesting relationships than Izzy/Axl, plus there's much less easy-to-find information about them.

I like Izzy. I think he was the first one to quit drugs he seems like the guy who wanted just to enjoy making music with his friends and the whole thing turned into a totally different thing with success.
