    It’s the scratch removal from your first 2 stones that’s important. Then alternate from tip to heel then back to heel to tip to remove scratches and set your scratch pattern. Basswood gives the crisper cutting edge. I now use Gunny Cloth. How deep are the scratches?

    I have a cowhide strop, but the emulsion is soaking into the strop insteading of beading on the surface. This is making it difficult to spread it around. Is this OK or should I get a different type of strop?

  • @GunnysSharptalk

    It’s fine. It all depends on how the strop was made. If it’s soft enough with large enough pores it will soak up the liquid quickly. After it’s loaded it shouldn’t soak it as fast when reloading

Amazon has a 10 pack of balsa wood that is 6x1x1", I think this would be great since it's thick enough to hold and not need a base attached. One more question, how much of a difference is there in wood vs nano cloth @@GunnysSharptalk

  • @GunnysSharptalk

    @GunnysSharptalk

    @@shane_wc wood gives a more aggressive edge. Nanocloth polishes better but you can over refine the apex easily. I have Gunny Cloth that’s a different stropping material with a PSA backing that sticks to aluminum blanks like lapping films do. You don’t need to clean them just add more compound when they stop cutting as fast as you want. They eventually wear out and you would peel and stick another one.

    @@richvillacres2793 I did a video giving grit ratings according to the factory I have making them. See a 1 micron isn’t all exactly 1 micron. I have the tightest particle size specs in the industry though. So my 1 micron should have 99% of all abrasive particles no larger than 1.25 micron. And 95% of all particle sizes not below 0.75 micron. With the majority being 1 micron. Many manufacturers may have a 1 micron that has 3 micron particles and 0.1 particles. Larger causes scratches that you just removed. Too small of particles aren’t doing anything at the micron size you’re trying to work. So the video I have up about choosing micron size is the factory’s approximate.
