Great way to offload questionably functional crap guns for a profit. Some of them attract people from out of town/state if the price is high enough above the actual fair value of certain guns. Mainly just captures a lot of junk that was never going to be used in a crime anyway. An actual decent handgun or AR sells for way more than they offer, so why would you turn it in instead of just selling it to a gun store?

I feel like there are two scenarios here. The police should not be able to justify an investigation with something they obtained during a "no questions asked" buyback. But if evidence of a crime tracks back to a gun they confiscated they should be able to use the gun in court. This would at least give a bit of trust to those gun buybacks while also not just giving criminals a way to "dispose" of evidence.

there is more at stake here. the fact is that Chicago has a LOT of homicides, and will have more in the future. the gun buy-back program is a goal to reduce the number of the homicides in the future. solving 1 case isn't going to stop future homicides as much as reducing the amount of guns on the streets. while the success of the gun buy-back program can be called into question, they cannot lose the trust of the community just to try to solve 1 case. it's simply not a good business model. Polive is a business, just like anything else, they just deal in order rather than common goods.

How does one (like a government) “buy back” something they *never owned* to begin with? And to “buy” something suggests that there’s at least an equal exchange between two wholly consenting and aware parties. I’m pretty sure a Glock and a Walmart gift card aren’t close in price at all. Lol
