Sir, thank you for this interview. This is such a treasure trove of information!! Please note that not all rock or metal is just a "wall of sound". Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, solo guitar players like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, all play mind blowing amazing music. Al Di Meola, a prominent jazz exponent plays electric and acoustic beautifully. Please listen to these folks.

I am a guitarist who is trained in western and Indian classical(carnatic) music. I find some things what he said about metal and distorted guitar very narrow minded. He should see Chris Broderick (metal/western classical) who plays 8 finger tapping. Why is it hard for people to appreciate all forms of music. I would like to see him cover Jason Richardson. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't make it useless or meaningless. Please respect all music even if you are well established musician in a certain genre

Hi IMX, Metal music is not bad and meaningless. Its a form of expression. You need to learn how to listen to it. You know many people do not understand jazz as well. I love indian classical and metal both. Metal is not always complex and technical. listen to bands like megadeth, dream theater you might like the guitar melodies and riffs. I respect naru da a lot. He has played couple of metal songs as well. Even 8 finger tapping technique is invented by metal musicians. :)

I completely agree. Unfortunately some people feel the need to denigrate something in order to praise another. Music is music and genres like classical , jazz , metal etc are all acquired tastes and even in my mid 50s I love them all. As for today's guitar players , I would suggest that the interviewer listen to the likes of Guthrie Govan or Tosin Abbasi before making such a stupid and sweeping generalization. .. these guys are absolutely phenomenal and will blow his socks out ...Also agreed .. Naru da is indeed a great guitarist , but to state that I neednt make a stupid statement that amounts to saying that Joe Satriani is a lousy guitarist ..You are also correct about metal players revolutionizing guitar playing .. credit has to be given to the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen , Jason becker , Steve Vai, Joe Satriani , Eddie Van Halen ( to name just a few ) for taking guitar to the next step after Jimi hendrix. It is indeed a shame that the interviewer being a guitarist himself is unaware of their contribution .

Does the interviewer suggest that guitarists like Herman Li and Sam totman of Dragon force ( From the posters that he displayed ) dont bother to "tune" their guitar properly ? Is he aware that tunings other than the standard EADGBE is used on many songs ?? I will challenge the interviewer to play the guitar portions of say Dragon Force's "fire through the flames" . I will give him a perfectly tuned guitar and Iam ready to eat his amp if he manages that ! Please dont act pompous . Narendra Salaskar is no doubt a very good guitarist however ..

The interviewers questions are very ill-formed and it sounds like he himself isn't very aware of different forms of music. John Frusciante purposefully makes the B string 5-8cents lower than the actual tuning when using standard turning to bring that different kind of sound. As important it is to answer questions, one should ask quality questions as well.
