GUITAR TONE - BUILD A SPEAKER CABINET IN 10 EASY STEPS

Музыка

Why buy a speaker cabinet when you can build your own. Quick build and sound demo.

Building your own cabinet will normally render a better product than what you can purchase because you're using solid wood and not particle board or MDF wood. You can also select if you wish an open or closed back cabinet and as well change the speaker grill material.
My cabinet dimensions were base on the most common height and dept for a cabinet. The width was based on the number of speakers being inserted... in this case just one 12".
WIDTH = 22.5 inches (57.2 centimeters)
HEIGHT = 18.5 inches (46.9 centimeters)
DEPTH = 11 inches (27.9 centimeters)
Wood used = Hard Maple Plywood
Hardware = Q Components (www.qcomponents.ca)
Paint = Miniwax Polyshades - Red Stain
Speaker = Celestion Rocket 50. (Note this speaker is an average speaker and was used only for the demo of this video. It works find when used with other high quality speakers).
Sound demo at the end of the video was recorded with the camera microphone.
Music playing during the construction of the speaker cabinet is by the band Calista, available for purchase on iTunes.

    before or after you staple? it it to heat it up so it expands and you can stretch it more while stapling so it then pulls tight or it is to simply tighten it up post-stapling as if it was a winterizing window film?

  • @philchevrier

    @@michaelwbuncher7599 After it's stapled. What I do is put it on and staple it as tight and straight as possible and then, once it's all stapled and firmly in place, I heat it up. Go slowly (you don't want to overheat it, it can put a hole in it if you do). With the synthetic materials, heating it tightens it so it's almost like a drumskin, looks and feels professional. I've done this a bunch of times and the results are fantastic.

    @@michaelwbuncher7599 No problem. If it looks a bit too loose and therefore "not that straight", this should fix it nicely. Remember to take it slow, nothing worse than having to redo it all because your burned a hole in it (don't ask how I know)... ;-)

My suggestion would be to visit the ORANGE, MARSHALL, FENDER, etc web site, find a 2 x 12 combo amp or speaker box, click on specifications and I'm sure they will list the dimensions… there you go, you're all set to build your own to a standard size!

    If you look on any on-line speaker accessory store you'll find most parts. Input jack is just the 1/4" input jack. You can get a jack plate for it (square or round). The speaker cable in this video was over kill. All you need is much thinner speaker wire (not cable). The slip on ends can be purchased at any automotive or electronics store.

    Robert Wootton Thanks man. In my end of the world (Canada) there is a cost savings to making a speaker cab yourself. Orange & Marshall & Blackstar & Celestion items are not cheap in North America. Wood, however, is rather inexpensive. In Canada the PPC112 new costs $430 due to the Celestion Vintage Modern Speaker. If you purchase the speaker separately, it costs $160. Parts for the speaker would be at the most $100, so that is $260 vs $430, as well as the enjoyment of building your own speaker cab the way you like it.

    don't speaker cabinets have some type of baffle system inside for tone shaping ? have you looked inside that Orange cab at all to see how it is constructed inside ? the cabinet looks beautiful btw , you must be a wood worker make it look so easy man :)

    What length measurement would you recommend to do a 2x12? Excuse the sarcasm, but I was planning on copying your steps but evidently 22.5" might not fit two speakers... Also, loved the little tune you played at the end!

    SimplyDeano I would suggest to do what I did. I just measured a cab from an amp company and used the same dimensions.

    I made a 2x12 cabinet and made it the same size as the Marshall 2x12 cabs so that a Marshall head would sit on it nicely (even though I ended up with a Blackstar). Mine is 74cm by 58cm or 29" by 23"

    Does the thickness of the wood affect the tone? What thickness would you recommend keeping weight and toughness in mind?

  • @markschmitt5550

    @markschmitt5550

    Yes... the wood thickness does affect the tone... and so does adding batting inside... try using 3/4" for the sides and then 1/2" for the speaker mount and the back for a guitar and 3/4" for a bass... the type of wood also matters... I use maple furniture grade plywood because of its strength and density. Try thinking of a speaker cab as a type of an acoustic guitar with a speaker for the sound hole. You might also try removing the back. I prefer an open back cab for guitar and you use a sealed, with a forward facing port, for the bass.

    - Interesting. If you look at most cabinets, inside and out, it's pretty much the same process. Only this has the satisfaction of accomplishing something on your own.

    Quick question, why not join with dovetail or biscuit? Just curious. I know from drum making they say the less glue the better, provides better tone. Is the same idea applied to making speaker cabs?

    +James Blackburn You could, if you have the tools, or if you never wish to apply tolex covering so as to showoff the joint. Sound wise, I could not see it making a difference.

    If you matched the color of your cab to your Orange amp, it would look better. Or just used a color that would be neutral or blend better.

    if Id use solid wood instead of layered plywood, would that resonate more than plywood? could I pad the inner walls to prevend that?

  • @jAMMAN798

    @jAMMAN798

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Alex Romgard No worries. Plywood and solid wood, not much difference in the end. Some solid wood cabinets are made out of birch, but then again you can buy birch plywood for less and I would guess it would give you the same results. If you pad the inner walls, you'll dampen the sound which may or may not what you hope for. Most people have two options with speaker cabs... closed back or open back. if you allow air to flow in and out of the back (by removing 1/4 of the back) , then the sound is more open (notes ring out). If you keep the back closed tight, then you have a much tighter bottom end. It all depends what end result you are looking for.

    Is there a way of working out how big it needs to be? I'm thinkng about building a cab, but ideally I'd like it to be as small as possible (ie. only slightly bigger than the speaker)

    +DP Trumann A cab can be any size you wish. Of course size will have an effect on the overall sound. You could look at other speaker cabinets on the market and just make it the same size as one of them. Huges & Kettner make small speaker cabinets. You could just look one up on-line and copy the dimensions shown in the specifications.

    Yep....I just got the H&K 18w Tube head. The 1x12 cab is $329 with a V30. I'm gonna build this cab in black, no handle on top, drop in a V30 and should stay under $200 total. 19W x 18H x 12D. Thanks so much for putting this vid together! \m/
