Thank you for the tremendous Terrapin tutorial! Talk about Inspiration, so the story goes, Hunter was watching a lightning storm through his window in Stinson Beach and wrote the words “Inspiration, move me brightly” at the top of the page. Simultaneously, Jerry was driving across the Golden Gate Bridge observing the same storm, came up with the melody in his head, got so excited he turned around and went back home to share with Hunter who had the lyrics that fit perfectly. Thanks again and have a great time in the sand! ☀️🏝️🎸⚡️🐢💨

Somehow never heard the story. I would love a Dead documentary where they focus on the songs, just the songs. Would be so amazing to pick - say 20 of their tunes and have the living members/family share their POV on the tune.

@@gmcsrbosavl6964 That’d be a great documentary. I’ve learned a lot about their song’s origins from reading the biographies. Highly recommend So Many Roads by David Brown and Blair Jackson’s An American Life about Garcia. I think the Terrapin story is in one of those.

Thanks Michael for the great video! I'm inspired to learn more of Terrapin! Regarding the writing story, what I heard several times is that Jerry was driving across the Richmond-San Rafael bridge towards the East Bay. He heard the melody and then turned around and went back to Marin. I hadn't heard that Hunter was in Stinson, I thought he was in Marin somewhere with a view of San Pablo Bay so that he was seeing the same storm Jerry was, although it would have been more or less the same storm in Stinson.

@@efolson You’re absolutely right. I’d got my bridges crossed 😉. Here’s a little excerpt with some more detail: Dennis McNally, the Dead's publicist and biographer, told the story in a 2021 episode of the Songfacts Podcast. "Jerry lived in Marin, which is to the west. He had been in the East Bay and he's driving home on the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, and there's a wild storm out to his right on the Northern end of the bay - lightning and just a great, wonderful storm and suddenly he hears a tune in his head, and it's the basic riff of 'Terrapin.' He hears the whole tune in his head," he said.

@@davidmugglebee523 Hmm, I thought he was driving east across the bridge, he heard the melody, and then he decided to turn around and go home so that he could start working it out on his guitar! I envisioned Hunter looking at the same storm out some window pointed towards the Bay. When I drive across that bridge, I think of it as the "Terrapin bridge"!

Magical tune, both music and Hunter's words. Magic. 3rd or 4th live Terrapin by then, standing about 30 feet in front of the band, on the general admission floor at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Maine 5/11/80. That Terrapin (and the Brokedown Palace encore) I was not of this Earth , brief moments, winking in and out, here then there, some purple silvery radiant, ultimately peaceful place. So beautiful, beyonds any words; sounds silly to try and speak of. For better or worse everyone around me heard primal screams as I was taken outside. Sorry for that, sort of, just torn from my soul, couldn't have been anything else. Never forget, Heaven on Earth, brief priceless moments. I know I'm an idiot, certainly sounding like one. Of course there was my first communion with the universe 9/2/78... Thank you for the thoughtful, interesting analysis! Have a blast in Mexico! As always, stay peaceful, stay empathetic...

The glorious bridge you discuss starting around 11:00 (following "not disaster") was done differently three nights running on 03-18/19/20-77 when Terrapin was performed three nights running (clearly they were working on it since this was the first time they played Terrapin after its debut on 02-26-77). The bridge has life-changing power, particularly on 03-20-77. Worth your professional and personal attention!! Another outstanding reading is from 2015's Fare Thee Well, when Trey runs through the entire bridge twice, note for note. It was a bravura performance for a guy playing songs in front of 70,000 people who knew them better than he did. Props!
