A Bill Kreutzmann quote from Wikipedia: "Jerry brought "Row Jimmy" into us one day, and it was really difficult to get a grip on it at first. It has a slow tempo, which makes it seem like it would be easy, but it calls for a slight reggae groove layered over a ballad. Rhythmically, the lengths aren't traditional. They're not just twos and fours. It's deceiving. Basically, you have to play the song in half-time with a double-time bounce on top. It's trickier than it sounds. But once I locked into it, "Row Jimmy" became one of the best songs in our repertoire."

That's what turns me off about a lot of jam bands. But the dead were drawing from blues, country, folk, jazz, reggea, etc. and took songwriting seriously with timeless lyricism. They're improvisations are more of a group mind jazz approach rather than purely groove based.

When Phish was at their best they weren’t lyrically focused. Which for a lot of us was perfect because we are\were sick of shallow formulaic love songs. Hairy hood is one of the prettiest songs I ve ever heard and it’s about a billboard, which is totally fine for me. Robert Hunter is one of the best Lyricists ever IMO but his lyrics are just pretty poems or VERY simple folk songs without Jerry’s music. Music is the most important part and Both Grateful Dead and Phish are incredible at music. Also it’s not 1995 there are tons of “Jam “bands with “serious” lyrics, it honestly ridiculous to say that.

When you're tallking about not counting, and it's about the feeling, it reminded me of that interview Bill Kreutzmann did on the "Long Strange Trip" documentary. He literally says he was always bad at keeping time, but was excellent at keeping the feeling, so he never kept the time. That statement sums up a lot for me regarding the Grateful Dead.

Brother....for just discovering the GD you SO get it. You really do man. It’s really beautiful to witness. You have a fantastic genius about you in your perceptiveness and understanding of music And you are so right...they are the only ones who do what they do. And sure Dead and Company is good and fun for a lot of people, but bro....stack it next to some GD in their prime and dude....no contest. Not even close. Mayer is not even in the same galaxy as Garcia as far as delivery of Hunters lyrics and the soul and creativity in his guitar playing. Not even close. This Row Jimmy is the perfect example. Bravo man! Well done

Do we have to compare Garcia to Mayer every time there is a dead related video. They both do what they do amazingly well. Garcia was a god on guitar but Mayer is certainly up there on certain nights. They both excel at things the other doesnt. Ill take a Mayer Althea every day of the week. And Mayer has elevated the bands popularity to a new level and is gonna push the legacy on for the next 25 years.

kevin Borchers hey Kevin! I’m glad to hear you enjoy that music. But as someone who came to the GD with Garcia alive, as long as people are saying what you just said and not differentiating that Dead and Co is a completely different band than the GD and referring to Mayer and Garcia in the same breath and the same use of the word ‘god’ - my conscience demands that I speak up for Garcia and the late great band that was the GD. Dude Meyer at his best is a pale pale shadow of what Garcia was capable of while nodding out. Trust me. But stoked your out there enjoying the song catalog and having a scene to be a part of. I really am .

Excellent analysis.. you explain really well really hard intangibles that make the band coming together like they do so sublime to hear.. Garcia stretching for those notes, the little fills and follows he does, the dynamic between Keith and Bob, the bass giving those counterpoints, etc.

FANTASTIC! Cornell 77 is way up the list, for sure! I'm looking very much forward to this series! The reason the sound is so good is because this is a "Betty Board" recording coming straight from the board at the show, as mixed by Betty Cantor-Jackson. I'm pretty sure The Dead have finally gotten control of all of the known Betty Boards. Heads, correct me if I'm wrong on that point. So much of what you hear out there is taper stuff, and while still great, and all we have of some shows, Betty Boards are the best I've ever heard! Betty put Bobby and Phil high in the mix, and it makes for fine stuff! I've been on the bus since 69, but the main thing is you found the bus, and there's always room! Such timeless music! I love a good, slow rolling, Row Jimmy! You're going to really enjoy Cornell 77! While not on Cornell, I think you would really have a ball with a rousing "The Eleven" live, this one from Fillmore West in 69! Talk about being out there on the ledge! This beauty is a tightwire walk from start to finish! Just a nice easy 11/8 time signature......no problem! Phil is an absolute BEAST on this version and Jerry just leaves you shaking your head....... kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWqju6OroLbRndY.html

I stumbled upon your video of Row Jimmy and listening to your explanation of how the song had a reggae beat to it seem to pull everything together for me.
