Cousin Kenny Vaughan is sooooo over looked! First time I saw him was Austin City Limits with Lucinda back in early 90's. So incredibly tasteful and true to country picking, never misses a note, always plays the right part, so clean. Tele, amp and thousands of hours of practice. Check him and Marty Stuart out another great player just smokin'.

Kenny has said that Chris Scruggs is the best guitar player in their band. I haven't heard Chris jam like this, I have heard plenty of his country playing and yes, he's VERY good. He also switches between lead guitar and table steel in a heartbeat, where he's equally as good. I'd love to see Chris with these guys and/or Brent Mason.

About 13:40 you can see Kenny is absolutely dialed in to what GT is doing, he turns to the drummer to kick it up, and leads GT to another level. These are pros. Fun to watch.

Hi Michael, this is Chris from J. Rockett Audio Designs. I wanted to share our story on how we started working with Guthrie. I had just moved to Nashville and wanted to find an artist that encompassed the Nashville thing. I was at Joe Glaser's getting a repair done and asked Joe who he thought fit that bill. Before I could finish my question he said Guthrie. I reached out to Guthrie immediately and that is how the relationship started. If you ever get a chance to see him with his trio for a night you will hear an endless bag of licks....so deep it is crazy. Guthrie is a great guy as well which really makes it more appealing but he is as good as it gets!! Love you channel!

Dude - I am so glad Guthrie is on your radar now. I found him years ago when he was first starting up his KZread channel. He's got to be my favorite player ever - and yeah he can play fast - but when he plays slow - I love it. The note choices just roll into right what you want to hear. I even took a lesson from him for my birthday - so much fun. He's made a big difference for me personally in opening up the neck with how he views it - so thankful. I'm still working on it obviously - but it's so great to be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel vs being in darkness and not knowing which way to turn in your search for unlocking the neck. Pretty much every night I walk through my CAGED chord shapes - but that's not enough (that's where most people stop short). After that - you play the major scale over each shape, then arpeggios, then pentatonic. You've got to be able to see it all constantly no matter what lick you are playing or where you came from - you have to know what chord (shape) you are playing out of. That's the key - that's the core of what Guthrie preaches. I haven't mastered it, but I KNOW it to be true. There are some who argue - I say argue with that performance. If a master like this is telling you exactly how he thinks and some other KZreadr nobody is saying it's wrong - who you going to believe? Thanks so much Guthrie.

I think you hit the proverbial "nail on the head" with two things you pointed out. The "country chromatic mindset" and "jazz chromatic mindset". To me, it's those guys that fluidly move through either or both of those mindsets that are the true guitar greats. Always love listening to Tony Rice (as an example) and his work in Bluegrass and then the jazz work he did on the first David Grisman Quintet album. Thanks for posting this...

Kenny would have a regular trio gig at a club here in Nashville. Killer jazz-o-politin country. And then Guthrie would fill in when Kenny was out. 2 versions. Both stellar. And often Dave Roe was on bass and either Jeffrey Clemens or Jimmy Lester was on drums. One of the many great reasons to live in the Nashville area.

I'm glad you stopped it during his solo as much as you did. When I asked why, he said that he saw me on KZread on a Guthrie Trapp, Video. Evidently it was you that recorded a portion of "Love the one Your With". Canadian blues and rock guitarist, singer, songwriter Colin James began his career touring with Stevie Ray Vaughan in a permanent opening spot. Since then, James has released 20 studio albums and won 7 Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammy), 27 Maple Blues Awards and earned multi-platinum record sales. Colin was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014. A superb guitarist, he is considered a musician’s musician. James’ 1988 self-titled debut was the fastest selling album in Canadian history. It won him his first Juno Award and an opening spot on tour with Keith Richards. It wasn’t until his critically acclaimed album Blue Highways (2016) that Colin James found himself topping the blues chart. In addition he's worked with some of the world’s most revered artists including Bonnie Raitt, Albert Collins, Pops Staples, Robert Cray, Albert King, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, Mavis Staples, Luther Allison, Carlos Santana and many more kzread.info/dash/bejne/lW2hsMihh9GWc7w.html

Don't apologize for stopping during the solo man! Quite honestly with guys like Guthrie, I don't see any other choice other than to slow it down between these blazing and HIGHLY unique note choices. I find myself doing the same thing and having to go back wondering "what the heck did I just hear?" We need to hear it multiple times to be able to digest it. Great vid. Case in point 13:07 with all due respect Mr. Trapp, what the HECK??? Just mind-boggling!

Trapp and Kenny are from another planet. I'm no great player, but when I'm playing lead in this type of country, in my mind it's structurally about alternating between major and blues scale single-notes, and also incorporating pedal steel-type bends and sixth and third double stops. I also try not to think in terms of scales but in terms of chord shapes and triads. And even for someone who is not anywhere near technically proficient enough to be able to play this genre properly, using that variety is enough to fake my way through a solo or two in a way that isn't boring or repetitive.
