Absolutely right. He is awesome. Maybe it isn't skillfull compared to other guitarists, but I play guitar and have to say that it is very difficult to cover his Solos in original Speed!

Yeah that's how it should be.. Too many people get caught up in the comparisons and try to turn it into a competition .. He's faster he plays more technical.. He plays with the guitar behind his head.. All that matters is the sound.. For Metallica to survive so long, way after the departure of Dave Mustain he has to be doing something right.. But yeah music shouldn't be a competition.. Its not athletics or sport.. Its music.. Without Hammet Metallica would never have recorded Enter Sandman.. You may not like it but you have to wonder if Metallica and Metal music industry as we know it would have ever gotten popular like it has for bands like Metallica.. Sold out arena's millions of record sales.. Success! Sure they had a pretty good cult following before hand but the black album like it or not was the one that introduced them to the masses.. If Dave had stayed there would be no megadeth.. And maybe a different metallica.. You can't imagine Dave sitting quiet and not putting his stamp on the band and the songs they write.. He would play his solos how he wanted for good or bad .. James Hetfield and lars probably wouldn't have as much control over the writing process. Things would be different without Kirk Hammet..

Back then, I dont even think he wrote solos. He came up with them on the spot. When he plays a solo live, he also comes up with the solo on the spot. A lot of people don't realize that. Kirk even said it back in 92, he said when he is on stage and he is about to play a solo, without anyone else playing, he comes up with it right there on the spot. Without any practice or thinking beforehand.

Playing those kinda difficult lead stuff isn't easy playing in front of crowds and he improvises them and it's awesome. I'm just a little shocked, you found this information surprising.

Kirk has always been a huge inspiration to me and I truly truly would love to thank him for giving me a awesome childhood without even knowing me. Thank you Kirk Hammett!

It's good; but SRV's version is incredible.

Imagine how it feels to have an audience of that size going absolutely crazy while you noodle on the guitar, hooked up to a wall of cabinet amps. I truly can’t imagine how good it must feel.

People think they are impressing people by saying he sucks. In their eyes people are thinking "omg he must know so much about music, he must be amazing at guitar!" They are just idiots, a real musician recognizes and appreciates a legend like Kirk. Yeah, he uses a ton of wah now... But he is still a damn legend, hell, he's the lead guitarist in one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the world...

Hey, Slayer is fucking awsome, Jeff in particular. In terms of technicality, no Slayer's solos aren't as good as metallica's, but it fits their style very well, and influenced lots of Death metal guitar players

Most of the comments are years old, and some hate kirk, and others dont. But, if you play guitar and you grew up listening to classic rock and metal, theres probably a good chance hearing the master of puppets solo (the first slow one in em) or the unforgiven, with the big bends, or the tapping solo and heavy riff in one, just literally made you want to pick up a guitar. Whats crazy is how many really good guitarists there are out there, but someone will pop up and say slash is the greatest. Another will say balderdash buckethead can play faster and wrote x many more songs. When you listen to these guys, just think of how iconic their sounds are, and where their sounds come from. I always hear hendrix bends and harmonics in kirks playing for whatever reason. And how clear the riff is on just his part (listen to one without the rest of the band) he isnt the worlds fastest, but i respect him for creating that iconic sound that made that song what it was. And regardless of whether i think i will ever be better than him, i will never look down on someone so humble, that i still learn new things from all the time. Go back and listen to one of their songs 10 years from now and tell me you dont notice a slight accent on a note you didnt notice before. Sometimes i wish i had complete videos of kirk playing in order to properly write down his solos, but i have not yet seen or watched a "kirk" lesson where someone teaches or wrote out the right notes in his solo on one, for example. We all hear what we hear, my ears just tell me theres notes that not everyone else hears. I may not ever be the worlds greatest guitarist, but if i can separate notes with the clarity he did on some of their riffs, thatll be a good start or practice routine to develop better picking skill. Keep playing kirk and forget the haters.

Kirk in his prime. His solos on AJFA were show off solos. Black album were toned done but were still badass. Load/reload most sounded the same, some badass. 2000-2020 is when Kirk just gave up. Also hearing Lars old drum set with that snare is amazing. I miss there old sound.

he will alway be one of my favourites he was so good during this era of metallica. people say he has gotten sloppy which is true but we must take into account that he is over 50 and constantly at photo shoots and press related events he doesnt have as much time as he did in the 80s to practice and maintain technique as he used too but kirk will always be one of my alltime favouirites

this performance was great and i think he is pretty badass without the wah pedal, it's just when he starts to abuse the wah that he is just annoying; wah in small doses is fine and actually gives your solo soul, but when start stepping on and off wah like a maniac it starts to get a sloppy sound!

***** Great to hear some sense from a place of understanding. Like Slayer, Anthrax's first lead guitarist Dan Spitz was never inspiring as a soloist but did his job in the fabric of the band. Big 4 wise, Megadeth had Dave who got a lot better since Mettalica but alays got other guitatrists on board who could kick his ass on solos. Thats obvioulsy what he wanted as it was his band! I've always liked Kirk - just seems like a complete musician to me without the ego

+Tyreek Murillo I grew up listening to Metallica. learned about the members line up and all that. I prefer Kirk Hammett over Dave Mustaine because It's how I am naturally. I agree that Dave Is a great guitarist. Just that I grew up listening to Metallica. My parents put on Nothing Else Matters while I was in my mother's womb. Since then, I loved Metallica. Well I discovered them when 11 years ago. And they've influenced my whole life since then.

You can't deny that he's a great player. There are more technical players but he's definitely not lacking in that area at all, and he had way more feeling and soul in his playing then a lot of metal lead guitarist especially then. Anybody who says he is bad is just full of shit and hating for no reason.

Its so fun to watch Kirk play. I love his style, especially the wah stuff. Hes a god in my book!
