    Congrats, you got a screamin' deal. Also wanted to tell you that a few months ago I was going back and forth with Thomann because the finish on my ST-70 Black Paisley had a small flaw. They ended up sending me a new one which I'm happy about. Return shipping was expensive at about $90 but they were willing to cover that though I had to lay it out. I was surprised they would pay that much which tells me that they must pay more that that to have one made. The wood on the neck is a bit more yellow than I'd like (the first one was a more pleasant color) but the finish is beautiful and I'm happy with it and their service. It's fun to play and I'll buy more living room guitars from them. Thanks for the vids!

    I have an older Edwards LP (no serial number, long tenon). It is my favorite LP guitar, which includes a Gibson LP Traditional Pro, Gibson Melody Maker 2014 with carved top, Ibanez LP, and CMG Ashley. There's just something about the Edwards that makes it special. That said, guitarist have different opinions of what makes a guitar feel great.

    Awesome review! I really want to get an Edwards Explorer, but I'm worried about potentially having to deal with customs to have it imported into the US (the CITES stuff, as well as having to pay customs fees). Did you have any of those issues when getting this guitar?

    Edwards are really cool guitars, and it sounds like you've got yourself a good one! I used to have one for super low (drop G) tunings and loved how it played; I just couldn't get used to how light it was compared to my LP. Then again, my Norlin Custom is like 14-ish pounds... Dammit, Nick, you got me looking at Edwards again!

    The numbers in Edwards guitars mean the suggested price in thousands of Yen... so the E-LP 98 would have a MSRP of 98,000 Yen originally :)

    I’m picking up a 2010 Edwards limited les pail model next week black cherry it’s a beauty, I’ve owned Burny’s, Orville’s, and a Greco but this will by my first Edwards, the guy switched out the pickups with 59 and Motor city Afwayu and since I play a lot of Alice In Chains and Cantrell uses the Afwayu in all his G&L’s thing should sound great..

    Nice review as always. Quick question for you, are you using Hercules wall hangers? I have those in my music room for my guitars, but can't seem to find the ones with metal wall mounts any longer. Are you aware of anyone selling the Hercules with the metal wall mount bracket? I've found a bunch of them with the wood mounting block, but I'd prefer the metal. Now, I must start my search for an Edwards to add to the collection......

    I own an Edwards E-LP 90 LTS in Tobacco burst that I bought a few years ago. It's not bad, but seems like a bit of a toy compared to the real thing. Maybe it's just expectation bias, I dunno. I love the Van Zandt strat copies by PGM though. You should review one of those. Mine is an STV-R2. Serious Mojo.

    I've owned a few. Currently I have a 135 ALS-RE, and an Gibson Les Paul Traditional. The 135 is a higher end model; all lacquer (no poly), Duncan Antiquities, Paper in oil tone caps, etc. One thing that may make it feel more toy-like is weight. The Traditional I have IS weight relieved, some years they are/some they're not. The Edwards is solid, and about 1.6Lb lighter. Dimensions are a bit different than the Gibson. I'll say I'm dubious as to if the 98 is actually a one-piece body, and not a 2-piece with a solid veneer on the back to make it appear as a one piece like many Fender MIM with burst finishes do. I've worked as a luthier for about 12 years. I bought a White Custom Edwards years ago from a customer. Me and the other guy at the shop got snowed in for a weekend with a drop-shipment of Gibsons for the local Guitar Center. We had a client's 58 burst, and did a shootout with a matching pair of Fralin PAFs to see which sounded the closest. It worked out pretty much as expected; the Custom Shop was the closest, followed by the Traditional, the least similar being the Standard. The Edwards we didn't try. I got bored the next day and did, and it was almost as close as the CS. The long tenon was a good thing, it was a bit heavy and had an odd neck profile, but the price was right. A year or two later, the prices of the Japanese copies started to get absurd (asking $1200-1300 for copies was just ridiculous), and that was for ones around the 110-115 LTS level. I bought the 135 ALS for about $700+ shipping within the last year or 2, so they've come back down to ground. Ironically,I bought it because I wanted to put a Bigsby on a Les Paul, but didn't want to drill into a Gibson, nor buy an Epiphone (I find them a waste for anything above entry or low-midlevel, you can just get a far superior guitar for the same $). I saw this and got it. I took the Antiquities off; I actually really like them, but I had a set of Wagner Cherrybuckers I wanted to use for a little more of a thicker PAF sound,I put the Antiquities on a 335. I haven't played the Gibson more than a few times in the last year, I just find the Edwards to sound and feel better; it's much more resonant, has better sustain and is MUCH more comfortable over the shoulder. I never DID put the Bigsby on it.

    Hello, i know this is a pretty old video but I do hope you'd reply. I bought an esp Edwards lp with cherryburst with flame maple that feels satin-like. I'm guessing its a 98 lts. However, there is no serial number. Ive read somewhere that serial numbers were stamped at the back of headstock prior to 2005. The seller told me it's pre-serial. It does not seem the neck was repaired. Do you know if 98 lts were made prior to 2005? I'm trying to find out the model. Pickups were upgraded to bare knuckles by prior owner.

    Hmm, i guess it goes to show one could put a descent set of pickups on a broom stick and it would sound pretty descent... So nick has all them China/ japan guitar's added up to lets say a used R8 a true historic yet that would be right around $4000

    Bought one of these new about 5 years ago (flown in from Japan with no issues) and prefer it over several Gibsons I own. The JB bridge pickup felt a little too hot, so it was replaced it with a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary. Perfection! It's very light at just under 8 lbs, and the neck may feel chunky if you've never played on old Gibson but I absolutely love it.

    Great channel man! Good to have more info and reviews, in english, of japanese guitars. But one correction on where Edwards are built: They are indeed made in Japan. I got really curious about this and read through all 14 pages of mylespaul thread on this matter. What they concluded, after reaching to several reliable sources within ESP is that for a brief period of time (between 09 and 10) Edwards had to use their China plant (where LTD and GrassRoots are made). That was due to high demands, so they shipped material and expatriated some Edwards employees/ luthiers to work on Edwards guitars. Here´s the link for the discussion: www.mylespaul.com/threads/edwards-guitars%C2%97the-whole-story-and-more.43888/

    Nick in the States Hey I don't know for sure. But then again it seems like no one does. Even the original rumor is hard to verify as its not even a screen shot but rather just a copy and paste of an email that may or may not have ever existed. I guess for me it really doesn't matter. I have two Edwards and love them both. And if they were made in china I see no tell tale signs of that being the case. Have a good one.

    Hey man! If you search eBay and tag for used you can often get them in the $600 range nowadays. That's still significantly cheaper than a used Gibson LP standard/traditional/classic and I'd argue that it's nearly there in quality. If you really hunt you can sometimes score one like mine for about $500 or so.

  • @zaqintosh

    @zaqintosh

    $500 new isn't bad, if it's objectively double the quality of an Epiphone let's say (which I'm sure it is based on your review). However, used ebay sold Japanese made knockoff? Consider I can walk into most local guitar shops, spend $700 on a USA made Gibson Studio that I can actually try and inspect for damage, that uses real lacquer, real maple cap (not veneer). Of course comparing to a $2k LP standard is another matter, but the studio is only superficially different (binding and less fancy flame top).. the studios are literally made side by side with the standard's and traditional's, by the same people using the same tools, and I get the same warranty :) With a lifetime warranty None of this is knocking your review BTW.. it's fascinating how close some of these off brand LPs come to the real thing! Just financially speaking, when you consider that you're buying a guitar from somewhere far away over bay, used... I might use my money elsewhere.

    Nice guitar, however is really worth the money? By which I mean you could pick up a nice 2nd hand Gibson LP, for the same amount, or a new Epi and upgrade and be able to sell it on quite easy. Edwards is not a 'name' and no matter how good you could have trouble getting a good price.

And Orvilles with Gibson pickups are just so sweet. I can't choose between that lot. But you can usually get an Edwards for a little bit cheaper and in better shape... that may swing things into its favor.
