I almost bought some of his blocks to try it out on my Blackhawk. It looks great. After talking to a couple grip makers who said they saw some Blackhawks loaded hot crack them I decided against it for this particular gun. I am ended up coming across a good deal on some real mammoth ivory that’s now being made into grips for it. I’ll be curious to see how it holds up to some of the hotter Ruger loads. Once you get some rounds on them with the hot loads I’d love an update because I’m still thinking about using his blocks for some of my guns that shoot lighter loads. By the way…. Great job on making them. I think you did an awesome job considering you’re not a grip maker.

That's a concern of mine to a degree. They are fit to the frame snug enough that they click into place, so hopefully they won't have any slack to allow movement and cracking. We shall see. I just bought some of the highest grades s+ for my Colt single action army clone from Uberti I am very impressed with it and I will be making one piece grips from them. I mean... if you have a Colt or Colt clone? it deserves one piece grips. One thing about the material is he told me it epoxies well. That is great as I will have to epoxy in a spacer block. I once made real ivory grips and ended up chipping the corner of one No way any epoxy would stick on real ivory. I like the bevel and really? it does not limit the grip area since it is more of a quarter moon with almost no material gone from the front and backstgraps. I also nickel plated the gripframe on that gun... On my three black powder Colts I nickel plated the grip frames and the cylinders and the barrels... Sorta more practical omn a BP gun but also as practice for doing my 1911 and model 19 target. One thing for sure tho... any tiny little scratch in the metal will show through.
@plowboysghost
10 ай бұрын
If I'd made them one piece for Colt clone, I wouldn't have had any problem. For a Ruger and the require holes...that's where my problem came from. Like I said...not the material's fault. It looks awesome when done. It was MY fault...as stated. With a Colt or std. pressure gun...the bevel is just fine. With my Cimarron Thunderer grip, std. pressure is just fine. With full throttle Ruger only loads in an aluminum grip framed gun? I prefer as much of a purchase on the grip as I can get.
@doranmaxwell1755

Yeah.. I get it... done a few grips and that escutchion or whatever it is called is knurled and gives the impression that you need to make a small hole and press it in..I would likely have done the same as you. it just so happened thatg I asked him about epoxy and he said it glued well... armed with that and your experiance in cracking one I would keep that in mind and drill the hole VERY slightly undersize and then epoxy the thing in. I have been doing knife handles and mostly using bone... you have to peen over the pins that hold the grips on (along with the epoxy) And guess what? I managed to crack a grip trying to peen flush. Dobn't get around as well these days so I like doing things at my desk or the garage had to learn and relearn a lot of skills and realize that I had been doing things wrong for decades when I did do em.. work on guns and watches and furniture etc Big stuff? wasn't even much help for my son building a shed in the backyard.o@@plowboysghost

Over the years, I have handled a few guns with real ivory grips. They are problematical to market due to liberal laws regarding ivory. You have to be able to prove the ivory was in the country before a certain date. This is not a problem for Elmer Keith's Number 5, which is well document, but an old nickel-plated Iver Johnson revolver is another matter entirely. Bummer. I was looking into some mammoth/mastodon ivory, but as it is 10,000 years or more old, it really isn't in the sturdiest condition, so is best for display only. Bummer again. This leave the Ivorex and other imitation ivory on the market. I am planning a 3-screw Ruger project for 2024 that would have some form of ivory-ish grips. This stuff looks like it might fit the bill. I've made a few grips over the years... and repaired a few. Epoxy putty does a fair job of fixing old Colt gutta percha grips that have chips on them. Gutta percha is about as rare as ivory these days, though for different reasons. I think your grips look just fine. Just wondering, have you tried any coffee staining of the scrap parts you have left over? This might make for an interesting way of "aging" them without actually carrying them in a holster for 90 years.

Look good to me. I have a couple of SAA's but haven't gone down the grip rabbit hole yet.

Either way, I have an idea I'll end up with some other grip frame and panels on this gun. Thanks for the kind words, brother 🍻
The grips that came on my new Blackhawk were horrible. Probably 1/8" gap. I can't believe Ruger sends guns out like that. They must not give a damn. So, this is what brought me to your page. Those grips look great, nice job, I guess I'll have to give it a try. I can't live with the crap stock grips even though my guns are tools and not safe queens, they deserve correctly fitting grips. Thanks for the video.

Well ..I've done videos recently on the current grip frame and grip panel changes. I like both the resin ivory and the current setup better than stock
Rugers for shootin, Dickels for drinking. The grips look great! I cracked up laughing when you pulled the bisley out. (That man means business lol) I’m just gonna have to get myself a Blackhawk and that all there is to it.

Looks great..i have similar Lett custom grips on a Ruger Bisley
I'm impressed. Those grips look great! But I think there must be a polycarbonate blend/alloy out there that would be more impact resistant--maybe not scratch resistant, but breakage resistant. There has to be. Now I want to look into it.

Yeah.. I get it... done a few grips and that escutchion or whatever it is called is knurled and gives the impression that you need to make a small hole and press it in..I would likely have done the same as you. it just so happened thatg I asked him about epoxy and he said it glued well... armed with that and your experiance in cracking one I would keep that in mind and drill the hole VERY slightly undersize and then epoxy the thing in.
Those look really good . I am glad to hear a review from someone that is not a grip maker as well. I had been aiming to try it every since I saw Snappers video on it. I was thinking it would look good on my Blackhawk. I was also wondering how it would hold up to heavy recoil as well.

I personally get the real thing or don’t get it. Out of “real” ivory or “real” stag I prefer Sambar stag (not elk). Sambar stag ages well and is VERY durable. I like my factory Ruger 3-screw and Colt new frontier wood grips.
I'm looking to put a RW gripframe in my Super Blackhawk. Not sure if I'll have buffalo horn grips or rams horn grips made for it.

@@plowboysghost I made some for my Ruger SBH and they look pretty good on there.
