Guitar Chats - 2022 Squier 50s Classic Vibe Telecaster

I got my first “real” electric guitar for my 14th birthday. This butterscotch blonde telecaster was picked out by my dad as an upgrade from my Squire Mini Stratocaster. I had been playing for almost 8 months when I got this. Today my dad and I take a quick walk down memory lane.

From what i understand they called it an "ashtray" bridge because musicians wound up taking off the covers on the originals & used the tops for ashtrays during sessions. ✌🌎❤

Indeed it wasn't the bridge itself that got the ashtray name but the cover for it in spite of some places on the internet incorrectly saying that it was because the bridge looked like an ashtray which is a bit of a stretch. The bridge cover really looks and functioned as an ashtray back when practically everyone smoked. The Telecaster bridge cover presents a real problem to palm muting so most players would remove it and either promptly lose it or employ it as an actual ashtray. It's kind of funny that a fairly expensive hunk of chromed metal that was intended to make the guitar more desirable looking turned out to be problematic and undesirable as to be removed by most players.

The ashtray is the cover, not the bridge plate.
