FOR ALL INSTRUMENTS - Freddie Hubbard . . . “Birdlike” is the tune, and the performance is like if Mount Rushmore had 19 heads, and they were all choruses of the blues. OK, maybe the analogy needs work, but Freddie’s playing here does NOT. Tune in for a master class on how to do it right.

There are SO many great albums. Some are "industry standard" and some more personal favorites, but still. SO MANY. Glad you are digging them!!

Freddie Hubbard, my favorite trumpet player!

Byrdlike has got to be one of my all time favorite tunes, and, for my money, Freddy is one of the greatest trumpet players to ever play jazz; his improvisation skills were sterling, at any tempo! I’m an amateur pianist and I incorporate “Byrdlike” into my practice routine. It’s not an easy tune to play along with since it’s brisk - not as brisk as a “Seven Steps to Heaven” burner, but it is challenging! When I first saw the youtube link to your “Byrdlike” analysis video, I got real exited. Finally, I was going to get the scoop on the intro! The intro: none of the Real Book versions include its transcription, and it’s a bear to figure out. Freddy seems to use a mixed time signature in the intro’s composition that I haven’t quite figured out yet. Along with the mixed time signature, the various horns are all doing different things rhythmically, and that makes it difficult to transcribe(for me anyway). Have you figured it out yet? If yes, I’d be forever grateful to see your transcription! Anyway, thanks for the “Byrdlike” analysis and I’m looking forward to checking out your other videos real soon! BTW, are you still playing with Tony Martucci?

Thanks for the note, and yes, I still get to play with Tony. He's a good friend, and a master musician! I'm so happy that you are enjoying these videos. Please subscribe if you haven't yet. There is MUCH more good stuff coming. And hey, if you haven't already, please jump in to a Free 30 Day Limited access to JazzWire. I would love to work together with you in a more meaningful (and not too expensive) way. With the Free 30 Day Trial, you’ll see what we're doing behind the wall! You'll be inside in about 20 seconds, no credit card required. www.jazzwire.net/free-trial/. These videos are great, but they are a SHADOW compared to the real work and we can do together! As for that intro, it is all in 4/4, but the accents that the rhythm section is playing are fooling us into thinking something else is going on. Listen to it, tapping on 1 and 3 maybe. Keep your spot, and you'll see that they are doing nothing other than playing 4/4 for 12 measures.

I know a lot of "not that old" jazz wives are probably googling my email address to send hate-mail as I write this. My bad. I earned whatever I get! 😂
