"𝐕𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞" Guided Body Scan Meditation ~ Samaneri Jayasara

This is a guided body scan meditation somewhat similar to the technique taught on the 10 day Vipassana retreat of the Goenka tradition (and as requested by listeners). The focus is on the first two of the four foundations of mindfulness that the Buddha taught - kayanupassana (mindfulness of body) and vedananupassana (mindfulness of feeling and feeling tone). However, please keep in mind that within the Pali suttas of the Theravadin tradition, the word vipassana literally means "insight" (or seeing into the true nature of reality which brings freedom from suffering to varying degrees). "Vipassana" is not one specific technique of practice, but rather seeing clearly that all conditions are characterised by anicca, dukkha and anatta (impermanence, suffering, non-self).
For a deeper understanding of what the Buddha taught in relation to the four foundations of mindfulness, here is a link to the original sutta: www.accesstoinsight.org/tipit...

s.n.goenka says body scan is the Viapassan meditation which Lord Buddha taught but some Buddhist scholars say the body scan is not a Visppassna meditation and there's no record of this type of mediation in earl Buddhism. I'll be grateful if you could kindly explain, thank you

Yes, this is correct in a sense. There is no record in the Pali suttas of the Buddha teaching a body scan meditation in the specific way Goenka does. The Vipassana course technique is somewhat of an amalgam of certain principles of body contemplations perhaps derived from what the Buddha taught in the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. For example, the asubha practice of contemplating the unattractiveness of the body (from the top of the head to the tips of the toes) in order to gain some dispassion and balance as regards clinging to this body. However, the depth and breadth of what the Buddha taught in relation to body awareness and contemplation can be found in the satipatthana sutta that I have provided in the link under the video. If would be good for you to familiarize yourself with it to understand this. The Buddha never presented a 'scanning body sensations' as a "vipassana meditation" either. This is a superficial and limited view of the profundity of what the word vipassana actually means within the Buddhist context. It is much more profound and muli-faceted than that. Hope that helps to clarify a little bit.

@@SamaneriJayasara is it too, because Vedana has one short paragraph in the Canon, yet vedana is the one strong hindrance that keeps us attached? 🙏🏼

@@fingerprint5511 Not really. Avijjā (ignorance) is the root cause that keeps us attached, bound and suffering. This sutta by the Buddha sums it up succinctly: www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn45/sn45.001.than.html

@@SamaneriJayasara thank you so much for explaining. In one the books of Padmasambhava you have read says Vipasana happens after you have achieved 4th Jhana I think that’s an indication that Vipasana is a much deeper practice than just scanning the sensations in the body. I did this course many years ago and it’s easy to get attached to some sensations.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but while you were scanning, I couldn't help but reciprocate in kind. I must say, I am very impressed. It's not often I find someone so unique, where the Astral body is equally as beautiful as the physical. I humbly bow in homage and respect, sweet modern Sage. Blessings

Thank you 🙏🏽 I'm really grateful for this mediation. Seems to help with my anxiety and PTSD, and I'm able to focus more on the body than with other forms of meditation. I also really like the soft butter meditation. Do you have any videos or information on what types of practices work best depending on one's temperament/conditioning? How does one choose the right practice?
