    "You look through the refractor... everybody knows that." What's a refractor?

  • @stevesmith1810

    @stevesmith1810

    6 жыл бұрын

    refractor is a type of telescope, the one you probably think of when you think "telescope" -- its lens is mounted on the "bottom" and you look through that (in line with how the scope is pointing), a reflector uses mirrors to bounce the light to a lens typically mounted on the side (makes viewing things high in the sky easier/possible)

    A few things to point out... Often times there will not be a bright star nearby, making starhopping impossible. Also, there are many times when you want to start with the highest mag lens, because some objects are very small (Ring nebula in Lyra, for example is near impossible to pick up without ~150-200+ mag) as well as the satellite galaxies of M31 etc.

    I've got a better way to adjust the finder scope. It works best in the daylight where you can see landscape features. First, using the telescope with the low power eyepiece, find a landscape feature as far away as you can. A tree, mountain peak, radio antenna, anything. It doesn't even need to be all that far away, a couple blocks will do. Second, without moving the telescope, adjust the finder so it's pointing at the same object. This will get you close enough at night so the finder and telescope will be pointing in about the same direction. Then refine the pointing of the finder at night if necessary. This works for red dot finders too.

    Congrats on the new telescope! Upside down images is normal. You don't need a right side up image for astronomy. As far as calibrating goes. Point the telescope at something on the earth far away, car,lamp post etc. Lock it all down. Then adjust the screws that hold the finder until your earth object is also centered in the finder scope. Takes a bit of practice.

    Is it ok to use apps like STAR TRACKER and Google Sky Maps instead of using actual star chart?

    epicfantasy Hi again, The focus tube is slightly moving upwards and downwards on applying a little pressure, is it normal or do i have a defective scope?
