As a person with emetophobia, getting laughed at and people dismissing it, is very common and very frustrating. Phobias can’t always be “cured.” They can be managed and worked on but it’s very hard for the individual going through it. It may seem ridiculous and funny to people like the guy in the grey shirt, but it’s very intense and real for people who have this phobia. Just bc you don’t experience the phobia doesn’t make it less scary for the person with the fear.

I also have it and agree completely. The whole 'face your fears' thing is a bit different when it's not just a fear and is a full-on phobia. People keep talking about the guy in the grey shirt and saying he is trying to get them to overcome it, but I think when it's a phobia, a therapist needs to be the one to help them with the exposure and response prevention because there are steps and things you have to do to do it safely and effectively.

I have it as well , and was sick everyday of my pregnancy, another reason I had another fear of pregnancy and I cried and shook before i went to sleep because i knew as soon as my eyes opened I would puke in the morning. And when it happened i would also be crying and shaking. It’s not something someone can just get over.

Grey shirt triggered so much dad trauma from my childhood lmfao he fs acts just like my stepdad used to when he “didn’t believe in mental illness” and thought you could just will power in or out of anything in life if you really wanted to, same with phobias.

That big dude had no respect for boundaries. Like yes, there is exposure therapy, but that's a consensual gradual process to decrease the stress responses. It can take years of work & doesn't guarantee a cure. You can't stick a spider on someone's arm & say don't be scared. I felt so bad for those people.

When I was younger I used to have a HUGE fear of people throwing up. In fifth grade I was in the middle of English class, and suddenly this kid made a face (apparently he was just messing around), but because I thought he was about to be sick, I stood up from my seat and covered my ears and started crying. I got in trouble for it and was told by everyone that I had to get over it, and though eventually I did (after several years), that was definitely not the way to handle it...

I was afraid of swimming classes in primary school and always find ways to hide (or skip) until it was time to return. On the last class the instructor caught me, asked why, told me it's okay, he will take care don't worry. Proceeds to push me underwater with him to hold breath, come up for 1 second, drag me down again and repeat many times...

I understand the emetophobia so much. It’s terrfiying to me. I do not think people understand how horrible this fear can be. These people are brave, I wouldn't even be in the same room if I knew I would experience my phobia.

I can completely understand the girl with emetophobia. I have it too and it has such a big impact on my life. Whenever I even think of having a belly ache or vomit I start to feel sick and nauseous. This has gotten so bad that I avoid certain places and situations because I know that I or someone I know has felt nauseous there. I hate theaters, shopping centers, trains, busses and long rides and I try to avoid them as much as possible just because I'm afraid to get sick. I always have medication and water on me "just in case", even if I never really vomit (I haven't puked in like 7 years). Even writing this makes me nauseous. I'm actually glad that there are people sharing my fear, but I'm also sad that there are a lot of people not believing and not understanding it exists. I hope this comment creates a bit of awareness around this fear because it's something more than a fear. It's like a curse to me.

The girl with the cotton phobia describing how her teeth hurt when she touches it is one of the symptoms of autism or sensory processing disorder or something of that nature, I have similar issues with stuff like uneaten food on plates or the smell of dishwater or certain textures making me physically vomit and need to get out of the room. It can be almost anything and even being close to it can be physically painful - if you’re struggling with it, don’t be afraid to go see someone about it and do a bit of research on SPD and sensory overload, understanding what triggers it and why can go a long way in making it more manageable

I’m not saying everybody with these symptoms have those disorders, but if it is at a point where it is impacting your daily life, it might be good to look into these things, seek help and go for a professional opinion. People shouldn’t self-diagnose, but they should be aware of the correlations between certain symptoms and certain disorders, especially if it impacts them, and keep an eye on their health and why their body/brain does what it does overall. Self-diagnosis should not be done, but learning about what affects your life and why is always important and can make a difference to a lot of lives.

Feel happy to see that emetophobia was included in this! I have it and it is a real thing, it has affected my life in many ways. I have been able to partially overcome it in therapy by dealing with the trauma that led me to it, but it was definitely crucial for me to know that this phobia existed and that I was not being dramatic or anything like that. Hope everyone that has any kind of phobia can feel understood like I felt

Oh hell nah, I have majority of these phobias so most of this whole video is uncomfortable for me, but I literally started gagging, tearing up and shaking when the vomit part happened and had to look away and shield my eyes from the screen and take my headset off. That is the one thing I absolutely cannot deal with. I don't know how she handled that so well especially in person so props to her.

I have OCD(?) and mysophobia Whenever I touch something I don't think is clean or came back from work/going outside, I always try to wash myself throughly with soup multiple times on the same spots until I feel clean. it kinda mess with my life. Luckily my showering session never took longer than 1~hour but still it's exhausting, both on the mind and body.

i got agoraphobia, it means the fear of being outside your home more or less, particularly places you cannot escape from without causing a scene. that goes for cars, busses, the dentist, the hair salon shopping malls, but it generally is there constantly when outside. it's just the fight or flight response kicking in and you don't know when or where and it fucks up your whole body basically it's not a good time. it affects my everyday life and have been for the last 10+ years, i have been outside and i do go outside, it's just a constant struggle to keep myself calm and i get so tired of it that sometimes a 30 minute walk feels like a marathon because i've tensed up so much and hyperventilated and many small sessions in the state of panic in different amounts throughout that i just go home and lay down for a good solid hour or two. how i got it? well i was at work and all of a sudden i just had a panic attack from nowhere and i thought it was a heart problem because my chest started hurting and my left arm felt a bit numb, not super numb but it didn't feel right. now it's not as much panic attacks anymore, now it's more just generalized anxiety so it has gotten better, but that took a long time for me to even feel courageous enough being outside at all for the fear of either completely panicking or passing out. it's a weird phobia and it's kinda wrongfully labeled the fear of being outside when it's more so the fear of fears.

I am petrified from spiders, as soon as I seen them I feel like I have them all over me, my heart starts racing.

I only have one, kinda two of these, but dang… I feel so bad for the ones who got told it can’t hurt you it’s not doing anything. Like a phobia is a phobia it takes time and effort to progress with them. Like good on them for not passing out but dang you could just see how far they were being pushed.

no more like the type of guy to help you challenge whatever you may going through so you can eventually feel more at peace of mind with it. whoever liked this comment is just too afraid to face their fears, insecurities, anxieties or whatever may be plaguing their mind directly. I used to be depressed and and thanks to his attitude that got me past it. stop making excuses for yourself

@@dancingdoungnut Phobia is not fear, for example: if you see a horror movie you might experience fear for some short periods of time, but someone with Claustrophobia can start getting worried af/panicking/hyperventilating just by noticing they're in a closed room, it didnt took half of the work that the horror movie production had to make a zombie make up and a teasing soundtrack at all, just one door closing can start a reaction way beyond the "you just need to concentrate and there's nothing to be afraid of" line

i have emetophobia, as soon as she walked out with the bucket and made a little noise, i skipped instantly. i’m in therapy for this phobia i have. it’s very severe and effects my daily life terribly. my heart is pounding and i’m shaking and i never even saw her get sick. i hope everyone who’s terribly afraid of something as severe as this phobia is for me recovers.❤

I have a fear of ladders... the ones you put on the side of a wall...

I have a huge fear of heights. Like to the point if you put me somewhere up high, I’ll pass out. It started when I was at Blue Mountain with my cousins family for 2 nights. We went to this outdoor jungle gym thingy with 10 levels. I was just on level 1 and suddenly I looked down and realized where I was and what I was doing. I started feeling sick to the stomach and eventually I started crying. One of the worker lady’s noticed I was crying and hyperventilating while everyone behind me yelled at me and rushed me to hurry up and get going. The lady got them to stop and help me get through the rest of the level and got me off of it. It was also the movie Fall that made my fear even worse. And the fact that the grey shirt guy thinks that putting everyone on a ladder will cure their fear in 5 seconds in crazy to me.

i have pretty bad emetophobia and i wasnt prepared to see it and i was looking at my phone and then i heard it and looked up and saw it and now im literally crying. props to the people in the video bc i wouldve had a full blown panic attack

I really can relate to the girl afraid of cotton. I didn't realize it at first but when I got my first jewelry present I realized I feel so bad of touching the box. You know those little soft boxes? I don't know how the textile is called but they're discussing. When I touch if I feel so uncomfortable, like I feel I could puke if I hold it for too long. They even make clothes from that fabric and it's something I'll never dress even if I'm dying from cold or something.

I have emetophobia as well and I agree with most of the comments that the grey-shirt fellas way of handling phobias felt like, well. about the reaction i get when i tell people about my phobias in real life. my phobia stems from the fact i was basically constantly ill as a kid and was often told i was faking my illness by my family. seeing kids sick and throwing up in classes violently and unexpectedly. everything about emetophobia related stuff gets me bad and i have been working on it since i was in highschool but i dont think it's something i'll ever be 100% comfortable with. just talking about it makes me feel physically nauseous so it's pretty rough getting food poisoning as an adult and it severely affects my life by food choices i can't eat from association with becoming ill/throwing up, scents that remind me of bile, noises that remind me of throwing up, some chunky stews. i hope that this resonates with someone or gives others a solid idea of what it would be like to live with emetophobia.
