Guardala MB2 Handmade Fatboy Compared to WW&BW LT

February 2014 -
I give some brief history on the Guardala mouthpiece company and their patents relating to the Fatboy design. I then compare the vintage "handmade" Fatboy Michael Brecker II tenor mouthpiece to the modern Laser Trimmed version sold by the WW&BW. I show the highlights of the Fatboy restoration and play test both mouthpieces.

Cool, I enjoyed watching your workshop, the comparison tutorial and the feel you gave when playing both mouthpieces !! I'm the guy that translated to English the e-mails sent to you by Alexander. Best regards Thank you Keith, Mr. MOJO

Hi Keith, I think that I like the sound of the Laser Trimmed piece slightly better. It seemed to have more thickness to the sound than the handmade Guardala.

I agree, the LT sounds better to me. I still have my handmade 1990 Guardala Studio model, recently refaced.

I've played on the Guardala MBII for just over 2 years now. I really enjoy it, I've had to do a repair on it when the bite plate fell off, I used an epoxy and it has stuck like it's brand new. Great Mouthpiece. One question for you, do you recommend any ligatures for it? I've been using the rovner that it comes with since buying it but I'm looking for something different. Would you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Good to see you back. Thanks for that comparison. Although they sound similar (and we'll ignore the KZread compression issues for the moment), the machine-made version has more edge...sounds more 'machine made' dare I say? Your technique for refilling the bite plate has improved ~ not nearly as messy. Your rails look very accurate. Nice. Do the two mouthpieces have the same (basic) shape to the lay curve? All the best, David.

My other video with the Guardala bite plate is not messy. Some go better than others. The full width black ones are more difficult to make. I have measured many LT facings but I did not measure this one. They usually have a bump in the facing curve that adds resistance to the low note response. The LT altissimo response can be improved with a little tip rail shaping work too. I usually charge 1/2 a refacing charge to adjust a LT.

I certainly meant no insult Keith; that job just looked pretty slick in comparison. I appreciate the difficulty involved. Some good info in your response. Thank you for sharing.

Very nice and interesting video, especially the compairing of the original and the new. I'm looking for the new model, but on the WWBW website they only list King, Superking and Crescent. Do you or anybody else know why? Are they going to stop the production of Guardala-mouthpieces? I am also aware that Nadir Ibrahimoglu (who used to work with Guardala?) now works for an German company called PMS. And they stock a lot of Guardala models. Is this the same mouthpieces that WWBW sells? Does anybody have experience with them? Grateful for any answers on this :-)

I would expect WWBW to have MB2s back in stock soon. They are not too difficult to find used. Check ebay and the For Sale area on the SOTW forum. Nadir did not work for Guardala. His work is pretty good but a little different than original handmade Guardalas and the WWBW LTs.

Hello from Germany, wonderful explanation and very interesting for me in the moment. The reason is I think about to try and maybe by one. I tend in the Moment to the new Dave Guardala MB II FatBoy Handmade from Nadir. Do you know the difference (Sound) between the vintage MB II FatBoy and the aktuell Handmade Modell MB II FatBoy Handmade from Nadir? Which one from the new Modells come close to the traditional FatBoy? Thanks for your help and stay healthy! Leo

Vue Vie I do not know. Nadir sometimes changes the design a little when he makes a Guardala mouthpiece.

I'm having a great deal of trouble playing my stock clarinet mouthpiece. Not enough volume, susceptible to squeaks, often flat in sound. Does your work extend to clarinet mouthpieces?

As well as you play, this sounds very important. Is this piece made Overseas ? Do you have to look For a whole new instrument? Really wish I was more knowledgeable. Let me know how I might help you. Good luck.

Have you ever seen Stainless Steel Lawton's or berg's with tip or table wear from reed vibration over a period of time. I would think SS would be the best overall material for a Long term durable mouthpiece without the problems brass have after a few decades of serious playing. Your Thought's?

  • @MojoBari

No I have not seen a lot of wear on SS mouthpieces. The main challenge with SS is getting them right in the first place. It is a hard material to adjust. Bronze Lawtons are also fairly hard. So are beryllium copper Sugals. Nickel plated brass holds up well if the plating is thick enough.

What makes Bill Evans sound better than all these - brighter, crisper and ripping? P.S. I have an old REAL Dave Guardala Michael Brecker purchased in 1979, and it is made of silverlite - 97% Tin and 3% copper. I think Nadir bought the DG rights. MB1 and MB2 are made by Nidir in Germany? I need to make my new 2017 Nadir MB1 sound better like my perfect sounding Bill Evans. The MB1 sounds like I have a sock in my bell - too DARK on many ligs/reeds???.

Scott Quickel I would need to measure your Bill Evans and PMS MB1 to be able to compare them and offer a plan to change the PM S MB1. You can send me an email to discuss further.
