Southwest tribes have their own recipes for tamales & tortillas. The Spaniards tried to make peace with the Southwestern indigenous tribes & tortillas was the only valuable knowledge that the Spaniards had to offer. Today, the different tribes have perfected tortillas, including the Navajo/Diné & the Apache peoples. Much love from a Navajo/Diné. 🙏❤️

Actually, tortillas are originally made from Maize (corn), and date back to the Aztecs and Mayans who would make them.

@@redwolf7001 tortillas was not an Aztec invention. many tribes were making it long before the invention caught a name. corn/maize is a main staple for many tribes across the Americas, especially in the Southwest. flour did not exist until the Spaniards came. in fact, the word "tortilla" did not become popular until the Spaniards came.

@@hydro6en317 Hello, I did not say that tortillas are an Aztec invention, I just stated that they are among one of the tribes that made them. The whole point that I was making is that tortillas are a Native meal, not European. I do know that Europeans brought flour to the Americas, that is why frybread and flour tortillas exist. Point is tortillas are Indigenous food to the Americas.

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day. The fact that most places in the US don't have businesses preparing indigenous food like this on every block really speaks to the massive decimation of indigenous cultures that is, sadly, part of the history and present of our nation. But it also speaks to the gumption of the survivors of the various genocides that were carried out here. The people who operate Juana Chile aren't just making delicious food (I assume it's delicious), and they're not just upholding the practices of their parents and grandparents. They carry on their shoulders a culture that has been all but erased. Why aren't there indigenous movies in the theater? Why are there no indigenous television programs on the main broadcast stations? Why don't I hear many indigenous pop stars on the radio? Scores of cultures are barely hanging on in the face of what I fear might be continued efforts at erasure. That's a lot to take on. If I'm ever in the area, I'd love to try the whole menu, top to bottom! Also, that hand-shaping technique might as well be magic. My clumsy hands can't even get those results with a rolling pin.

Yeah I’m confused too. Once they started talking Spanish I assumed Mexican Yaqui not the ones from USA. But then the singer said “for the hispanic family” and mainly only Mestizo (mixed bloods who claim only Spanish ancestry a lot) say that they are “Hispanic”. But I’m thinking they’re Mestizos not culturally Yaqui but I might be wrong.

American Indian includes indigenous from Latin America. Native American just means USA. As a descendant of chachi Indians from south AMERICA. I can assure you American Indian DO listen to salsa and merengue and other so called “latino” music. But interestingly they sing theirs in Cha’palaachi 😃👍🏽 rather than Spanish, I uploaded a video about them on my channel. Btw I don’t agree with being called Native American for those who want to say we Latin American Indians are Native American. We do not use that EVER to defined ourselves. Amerindio yes in English American Indian. To have a unified term from Canada to Argentina it’s American Indian as the international Indian treaty counsel says which btw has chicanos as members. And also I believe there should be an exclusive term for US Native Americans since the culture is obviously different from ours. In other words only they are native Americans leaving out Canada and Latin America. Also the natives Columbus encountered were not Native American as our US history says they were taíno Caribbean. Columbus never set food in USA. When they say he discovered America they mean the continent not the country. They created a lot of confusion naming this country America for real. But I might add it’s weird that the singer said “for the Hispanic family”. I really think they’re Mestizos. (Mixed bloods Latin Americans who only claim European ancestry mainly Spanish) not even chicanos straight up Mexican Mestizos and Mexican American first generation
