Program Notes:
Part of the deep admiration and reverence I have for macaws includes my fascination for the brilliant, lush colorations found throughout their feathers. With these neotropical birds acting as the main inspiration for guacamayas (Spanish for macaw), I approached the saxophone quartet as both a unified flock of vibrant macaws, and all of the captivating, visually-striking colors that can be found on an individual one. Through this colorful duality, guacamayas aims to evoke the unity, playfulness, loudness, and chromatic flair that macaws are well-known for. As a fun side note, blue-and-gold macaws are my personal favorite, while my wife has a fondness for a variety of hybrid macaws known as Maui Sunsets.
