Has played or played it once because that's a big difference, he plays with a relatively small tip opening which makes it so he needs to use less air than most bari players. His endurance to dance while doing so is really impressive but the length of his phrases is doable

There is absolutely nothing quite like the sound of a perfectly played baritone sax. It's just so MEAN, I love it. Don't get me wrong, other saxophones are great too, but the baritone just has the "OOMPH" quality that is such a vibe. Love it.

Man, everytime I come back to this video I'm reminded how fucking tight the drummer is. That synced up soloing is such a groove, he's an absolute master in producing a beat and the kit is tuned beautifully and mixed so incredibly well, all of the band is. Live perfomance mixes have come such a long way in the last decade and it's excellent to see. If I ever get back into sound engineering & running a desk in studio or concert, I hope I can keep up the new bar of incredibly tight and balanced mixes & masters that engineers have been pumping out over the last 6 or 7 years as the old guard have finally stepped down and appointed talented fresh blood that have a better grasp on the technology & access to better gear & environments.

I mean it's a jazz tune lmao, it's Moanin' by Charles Mingus, an extremely famous jazz bassist and bandleader. Dude also used to play for one of the most famous and important jazz bandleaders and songwriters in history, Duke Ellington.

Strictly speaking, we all do. The CO2 we produce when burning sugar is greater than the amount of O2 we inhale. Which makes sense considering sugar & fat have tons of oxygen as part of the chemical structure and we're attaching carbon molecules to the O2 we breathe in to turn it into CO2.

Wowww. This saxophone is phenomenal. Not only on the big pipe but I really appreciate how he puts his whole person into this performance.

obscene honkage aside, i think my favorite part of this is how seamlessly he slots back into the band. he cranked the showmanship up to 130, had his fun, and then reigned it back in right when it was appropriate. awesome performance

this man is high key one of the modern sax greats - still remember when our middle school band director introduced us to Too Many Zooz, and I’ve been enamored with the bari sax since … it’s been almost seven years since then and this guy still rocks and I’m glad he’s getting some attention in other collectives too 🤘

this is why i love jazz/ big band so much. there's just so much more freedom of expression and spontaneity as opposed to other forms of music which are usually more focused on repetition or more minor changes of common things for their creation of new bits of art

It's nowhere near as spontaneous because it doesn't have the same focus on improvisation, but progressive music gets you plenty of that freedom and lack of repetition. It's progressive death metal but go listen to Ghost of Perdition by Opeth - it's a goddamn musical journey.

It rarely happens that I become obsessed with a piece of music. Then I hear it, first many times and in the following weeks and months I hear it several times a day until it finds its place in my mind over experiences that I will never forget. This video and audio experience is one of those.

Believe me when I tell you this: this man has ALL the lungs. Bari is tremendous on the lungs and this dude banged that out like it was nothing

My first year or two with the saxophone were spent as a 12-13 year old on the Alto - my tutor promised he'd let me try a Tenor one day when I grew into it, but the Baritone was way, way beyond my weedy little frame. I'm an adult now, but I can't help be impressed by this dude's ability to throw a Baritone sax around like it's a plaything.

The trumpet playing is impressive too. It’s not very easy to play that high it requires a lot of air too.

@@SicRBS there are plenty of three min long concertis, i.e. Chen Gang's Kindness. Not to mention the full performance is 9 minutes, not three, and there are A LOT of 9 min long concertis. Also concerto is not a form, a concerto is just a soloist or a group of soloist vs a larger force, be it an orchestra or a chamber orchestra or a string orchestra

i will never understand how people can have so much talent that they can just jump around with a bari sax and play (almost) perfectly

I love how at 2:33 you can just tell that the guy playing the trumpet is like “oh hell man this shit is craaaazy”

The funny thing is, I'd normally say dance moves like that are a huge gimmick. But the funny thing is, even without any of the dancing this is one of the best bari solos of all time.

sax player here, that shit is really easy, especially in the range he's playing in and the key, the palm keys on the left hand make it super easy with nearly a whole octave, nevermind his altissimo which I know piss all about

That was incredible. I played alto for 10 years with some tenor and soprano mixed in during high school but could never do baritone. I tried many times but was never able to get a note out. This guy playing so smoothly and hitting the altissimo register with such ease is amazing.

The whole show was impressive, and I watched it solely because Leo P was part of it; he did not disappoint (and neither did any of the rest of the orchestra - they were all staggering performers, huge respect to them). I've now seen the whole performance a few times, and it still blows me away every time. As to Leo P... Well, the man's a skilled lunatic. It takes strength and stamina to carry a bari sax, never mind DANCING while playing one as expertly as he does.

@@BibleStorm It was a BBC Promenade Concert (or BBC Proms for short) - a concert series that has been running for over 100 years. This particular concert was part of the 2017 season. The idea of a "promenade concert" was originally that where the audience could just stroll about whilst the music was played. For this concert series some of the audience can pay a small fee to stand for the whole concert, either down at platform level (Arena promenaders) or high up in the gods (Gallery promenaders). The venue is the Royal Albert Hall in London.

He became famous busking, but that's immediately after he graduated from conservatory at the Manhattan School of Music. He's a trained musician who happened to become famous on KZread. He's no random busker that was self-taught and lurking in the shadows.

Ohhh man, this is already one of my all time favorite jazz songs, and seeing it done by Leo P just made my day

It always amazes me to see extravagantly dressed people match their style with their talent. Truly an amazing lad that Leo P.

Leo P does not fuck around, in fairness to him. He knows what he has and what he can do, and he *FLAUNTS* it, sometimes a little too proudly. Man's a peacock, he can't help himself.

Oh thank you!!!! With all the muck in the world I have stumbled upon this!! and the musical notation "obscene honkage" made me giggle whilst bopping. Not easy for someone of my advanced years! this is a joy!

I’m a drummer, but acquainted with many sax players and anyone who has the lungs to blow this is not human. What a monster! Especially his reed banding!

Imma do u a favor a bring u back to this brilliant performance lol. I'm also a drummer and I'm curious if others have noticed the same as me. That is, every time I've listened to this, I feel like the drums, esspecially those beautiful fills and accents, makes this entire solo so much better. To the point where while Leo's talent can't be denied, but the musical performance is equally, if not more, on the drummer. Edit: More or less, do you (or anyone else) feel the same about the drums here? Like the more I listen the more I'm blown away.

Gonna bring you back to say that a good amount of this performance is 1-2 octaves HIGHER than what a bari sax is supposed to play

​@XmanAdanacLax I said the same when I first started getting this recommended to me last year. The symbiosis of Sax & drums throughout this solo really elevate both, the kit is mixed really great for a live mix and has a nice timbre to it within the rest of the band which is still somewhat rare to see with recordings, it's very well done

@@javierxhr nah that's definitely the easiest part to play in the whole solo lol. Doesn't mean it's easy or not good, but relative to the rest of the solo it's easy

i don't even know how many times i watched it but it gets better every time

The first part really shows the importance of groove. Most of the solo is arpeggiations and simple harmony outline, but the way he plays it sounds amazing.

From the New York subway to the Royal Albert Hall...Leo P destroys it any time, any place.

just effortlessly rocking the entire house down with his bari sax.... this man is god in sax playing, pink ascot wearing form.

For those who don’t know the song is called moanin by Charles Mingus Small correction the second half is moanin

God Moanin is such a devastating groove as it is and Leo just kills it

as a sax player, this looks so good on our part 😭 of course i’m only in 8th grade but that’s literally so impressive i could only imagine how proud he was of himself after this masterpiece

My advice as a junior, get as good as you possibly can while you’re a freshmen. Make your senior year amazing

I was lucky enough to catch him playing a few times when he used to busk in Union Square station and it 100% made my day every time.

The joy from Pellegrino at the end is every musician joy when you know you crushed it with style and swag. So much positive vibe and proudness I must say !

As a bari sax player that plays jazz, from a scale of 1 to fonk, this is FONK. The lungs on this man...

"Honk with pelvic thrust" - "Return to frog" - i imagine it is a multiplication of joy - Leo likes to dance while playing - The Audience likes to watch Leo, enjoy moving while playing - You enjoyed notating Leos Moves (i bet!), i actually enjoyed seeing this in the transcription - somebody might even find joy reading this... :-)

This is the reason I want to play a bari. I love playing alto, but man can the bari sound pretty good, especially with the deep tones it gets, and the fact it can still get high. It’s great. I love the bari so much, the music is amazing, great job on getting notes notated

This solo and the one before it both have the air of "I own this stage now and I will do with it as I please."

After noticing this was at the proms, I just have this picture in my mind of somebody going to see a night of classical music and seeing this :D

It was a "late night prom" so it was a bit looser but there were a lot of people who stuck around from the classical prom earlier and had their minds blown (myself included). The BBC coverage was so sneering towards Leo P it really annoyed me when I re-watched it, though they did make the fair point that Charles Mingus (the prom being a tribute to him) would've probably wanted to thump him!

@@swalsh91 He had the crowd on their feet, in fairness to him. The Proms is usually pretty tame, prim-and-proper, but Leo had them mesmerised and they just went along for the ride. Music is *supposed* to take you away like that, and jazz especially! It flows from and speaks to the soul.

the pelvic honk is always a challenge for me

This is absolutely spectacular and this twist on moanin’ already a favorite of mine was absolutely excellent! Jazz trombone player here and I can’t even imagine how this guy manages to play, get such a clean sound, improvise incredibly well, and dance around at the same time. Absolutely incredible! Makes me wish I chose saxophone
