    They took back 10% of the market since last year. So it seems the 400 series and their huge software overhaul has really appealed to gamers.

    AMD cpu's are looking more and more disappointing as the benchmarks keep leaking. Lets hope the Vega GPUs are actually highend instead of cheap budget cards like the 480.

    Honestly, its marginally better, and still at a worse price point. I picked up a MSI 1060 6gb gaming for $230 during a sale. Its incredibly efficient, with the fans actually being off 100% of the time when I'm not gaming. And only ever reaching about 50% speed while under load/gaming which is still inaudible. I dont know how AMD is doing in regards to their power efficiency, and heat, but they are gonna have to win on all fronts before people start making a switch. Clear better benchmarks, clear less heat, low noise, AND have working drivers that can compete at launch.

    AMD cards get better over time over the drivers. Nothing new here this was to be expected. History repeats it self again like it did with the r9 290x and gtx 780ti. 780ti has fallen so much behind that it's rediculous almost 25%...

    Nvidia seems to spend money on maintaining cards just long enough for benchmarks to come out, and for maintaining that performance throughout the majority of it's spotlight. Once support isn't worth their money, they just repeat the process with whatever card they're currently focused on. If you upgrade every year, Nvidia isn't a bad choice; although, AMD has longevity on it's side, and still very comparable performance at launch. Unfortunately lots of people don't factor in long term, and AMD suffers becasue of this. I wish they could get their drivers figured out earlier, and make it easier for themselves.

    But AMD isn't perfect either. Their drivers are really bad, if you didn't have R9 290X don't say anything. R9 290X burnt my PC. E.g 1070 is scoring extremely good at DX12 and VULKAN. while vulkan is abandoned. Doom 2016 is the only game that uses VULKAN. AMD cards are aging very well, and 780Ti and 780 are KEPLER. Very old architecture, since basically no one haves them, they are more focused on MAXWELL. And you are talking about that AMD is perfect, they aren't even close to perfect, their drivers are bad since they bough ATI. With 290X I couldn't play games for 1 hour without several driver crashing. It was consuming 300 Watts 90c was optimal temperature, while on idle it was about 60. Even bought water cooling but when on gaming with water cooling it was 112 and my PC just turned off. I was so scared, and card burnt. They didn't want to apply my warranty too. MAXWELL is old 4 years, still great support. First KEPLER was released 2009. Well for a PC gamer, it's optimal to change every 3-4 years to a new GPU and possibly CPU. NVIDIA is more reliable in my opinion, since R9 290X really pissed me of. Right now I have R7 250 and here we go again AMD Driver has stopped working. DAMN!

  • @plasmahvh

    @plasmahvh

    6 жыл бұрын

    +BlackSn0wz No, with NVIDIA you don't need to upgrade every year. NVIDIA + INTEL is well known for a optimal gaming PC. While AMD is more cheaper, but you get what you payed for: Really HIGH TDP and they run pretty hot. For R9 290X staying below 100 is safe.

    It was also a lot better at launch and just better overall. The pricing does give AMD a selling point there, but atm they have no GPU's to spend that saved money on. Can save £100 on a 1440p 144hz by going AMD, but still be stuck with a 480 thanks to no high end cards, gonna be a lot better soon when the 490 launches (as long as it's not another stupid dual GPU like 295x2)

    Yeah, it kinda sucks, I'm really wanting to upgrade and really the only thing that is in my price range and something I want is the gtx 1070. AMD still hasnt got a card out that is comparable. I'm looking at the 490 but it better be a single card. I may have to wait until Vega for that though...

    Yea I'm looking at building a new rig atm, one for my Fiancee, And the 480 is okay at 1440p but would love something a bit better without looking at last gen stuff. a 490 for less than a 1070 would seal the deal and make me get that and a freesync panel.

    FINALLY! Someone did a revisit of the RX 480. AMD's GCN has always aged better than Nvidia's competing architectures. Anyone remember when the R9 290 and 290X came out in 2013? That thing lost to the GTX 780 Ti. Now the GTX 780 Ti isn't even anywhere near them. Same goes for the GTX 970, which was actually faster than the R9 390 at launch. A year later, the R9 390 is comfortably beating the GTX 970 -- and it's funny because the R9 390 is basically a rebranded R9 290. lmao

    No, you can't say one card is better based on just one review. It really depends on what games you play the most. some games are better on GTX 1060 and some others on RX 480. For example if in this video instead of Call of duty : IW they would have benchmarked Mafia 3 or Watch dogs 2 or Civilization IV you would see completely opposite result from this test.

    yeaaah, AMD would probably do the same thing, but they aren't in that position and as you said in the part 2 of your statement, monopolies aren't good for anybody so maybe supporting the underdog in a tie is the way to go. (also on the first point, it might just be a PR thing, but AMD has traditionally favored Open platforms more than NVidia and it is possible that if they owned the market, they would still do so which puts them in a better spot than NV if you're looking at it that way.)

    Er, there were several slip ups with this video. The 1060 6G base retail price is 250, not 260 @2:04, and card selection for the comparison is a little bit... amateur. While the results are only slightly affected, you're comparing less comparable cards than is sensible for "solving the dispute". A single-fan GTX 1060 that costs more than a PNY dual-fan card (meaning greater performance out of the box with the new GPU Boost) being compared to what's pretty widely considered one of the best examples of the RX480? This lack of forethought in the selection is troubling. I appreciate all the work that went into this comparison, but mentioning pricing and availability as seemingly an afterthought in budget-oriented cards, and then comparing totally different styles of coolers between the two potentially mucking up average performance results is problematic, especially when some of these results are so close. I'd love to see a revised video (or article) with these issues solved, but it's probably more work for you guys than you consider to be worth it. Like I said, I appreciate all you guys do, and I hope to see your quality improve, so I apologize if I sound overly critical. For what it's worth, the video was very pretty :>

    Alexander Kjelby The Founder's Edition cards are basically irrelevant. They're just expensive blower style cooler cards that some people think look cool. Blower style coolers suck... Which is inherently kind of a funny thing to say. Basically the ideal cooler setup for Pascal cards is at least a dual fan if not triple fan or liquid cooling. Card performance is tied directly to cooling performance, and you will see thermal limitations being hit with single fan cards or blower fan cards.

    lol basing speed on clock speeds is like telling which car is faster by the rpm .... OC on the 1060 might look big but it equivalents to only a few fps jump. while a rx 480 clocked at 1460 scores much higher on most synthetic benchmarks and games. core counts, memory bandwidth, bus size and raw compute power matters not just clock speed.

  • @Najvalsa

    @Najvalsa

    TheSinisterEyes1 If you're talking to me, I never said clock speed = one is superior over the other. I'm talking about how he said that he wouldn't OC them because OC varies, and while that's true, there's somewhat of an average that most will be able to achieve.

    I loved the video and I've been wanting to see a video like this for a while now, especially with all the hype of "oh the 480 will get better with drivers!" That being said, wow, couldn't this had come out just a little sooner, like before the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales? This would had have really been a huge motivation on my decision as I struggled between 480 vs 1060. I went with the 1060 but it was a tough call to make and this video probably would had helped push me in the AMD camp (Freesync was tempting). I imagine there were a lot of people who made a "big" purchase that day where this would had been a deciding factor. Granted it will also be helpful for Christmas, no doubt. Oh well. Still appreciated the informative video very much and am interested in seeing just how far the AMD line will be able to go in the future through further updates and optimizations.

    I'd recommend GTX 1070 if you want to game at 1440p. For 1080p gaming, the GTX 1070 can still make sense for maintaining high frame rate (100-144fps). AMD provides a much better value proposition for variable sync with FreeSync, although at ~80+fps variable sync doesn't make much of a noticeable difference (just leave vsync off & you'll hardly notice any tearing). Overall I think RX470 & RX480 are the smart choices for most people playing at 1080p. In a new build I'd probably spend more on CPU than on GPU. You want a base system that'll last you through 2-3 GPU upgrades.

    Hmm... one of the best AMD RX480 on the market versus a single fan, compact GTX1060 from EVGA... Maybe you guys should have picked an Asus, MSI, Gigabyte or Galax nVidia card. Those have better power distribution and cooling allowing for higher clocks and as a result better framerates. Or at least a dual fan design. And no. I'm not an biased towards nVidia.

    The conclusion that showed a 2% win for the 1060 @ 1080p in DirectX 11 and a 6% loss for the 1060 in DiextX 12/Vulkan etc... was reference RX 480 vs. EVGA GTX 1060 Gaming 6GB.

    I would quote from a post I read but I'll just paraphrase.. nVidia's new line of GPU's are so efficient that it doesn't matter at all which card you get, as long as it's not reference. The best 1060 might get worse overclocks than the SC from EVGA, or it could be better. There's not any binning from what we can tell so far for the AIB nVidia cards.

    Hi Canucks, just want to share a feedback. It is probably better to keep the cards' position the same across charts instead of sorting them by ranks. I was confused for a bit there, and even after figuring things out it is still hard to keep track of how well the RX 480 is doing against the GTX 1060. But very helpful videos. Many thanks for the work!

I saw that cryptocurrency miners were all going with AMD over Nvidia, which told me that AMD had the real raw power, just needed better drivers. And here we are =) SO MANY NVIDIA FANBOYS tried to talk me toward a 1060, but I didn't budge. Got my 480 8GB for just $199. =D

    This argument about 4 gig ram always makes me laugh actually. If you run a game on 1080p that needs more than 4 gig of Vram you would need a 1080p screen about 32 inches or more to see the difference. If you could spot it. Better to dial down textures a little,or sell the card rather than crossfire.

    Well this is great to see. Although I still went and switched to a 1060 and as much as I would like to go back to AMD, there's still a number of NVIDIA features I love using and have a hard time letting go of. I use Shadowplay very often and there's almost no substitute that works as good as it. I use Ansel for 360 shots for Witcher 3, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and I would use it for Watch Dogs 2 when I get it and I'm excited to use it on coming games that would support it. Yes, I also use Hairworks because it looks great on Witcher 3 and I use PhysX on some older games. It's really those kinds things that keep me on Team Green and I really hope AMD steps it up on that department since they're already doing great in the performance side of things.
