I agree😂 this has to be the most underrated cause if you have A 6.5 you ain't in the city that's for sure

My 94 GMC 2400 had 400,000 miles on it when I bought it. It was run daily and I put 110,000 MORE MILES ON IT. In its life, the 6.5 Diesel had a new Head Gasket installed at 250k mark, a rebuilt injector pump at 465k, new injectors too. Im sorry I traded it in. I had an offer to sell it on the spot … from a total stranger. These 6.5 diesels are truly great motors.

Ya there Detroit diesel 6.5L are good motor. I'm thinking of buying a 1995 Chevy 2500 or 3500 4x4 5 speed. When i get my license next year.

For those who buy the 6.5TD and the PMD is in the original location, if you get a non-start, don't listen to the GM dealer, because he'll want to sell you a whole new injector pump assembly, which the PMD is part of. GM doesn't sell the PMD alone (or at least they didn't when I owned my '99 K3500) so you have to order it elsewhere. I had my truck towed to the local GM dealer after it wouldn't start, they told me the injector pump needed replacement (and it was 3000 miles past the 120K extended warranty GM was using). I had read on the Kennedy Diesel site about PMD failures and ordered a new one through Kennedy, and installed it myself in the parking lot of the GM dealer where the truck was sitting. Got it hooked up and the engine immediately started. I looked sideways at the service manager and drove away. I put mine up on top of the intake manifold plenum, mounted to a heat sink. I put another 70K on the truck before selling it.

Honestly if you know electronics repair and how to solder, you can probably even just replace the transistor inside the pmd, for cheap. Dealers, and even mechanics, aren’t actual mechanics any more. They’re parts swappers

Make sure the front brace is on the starter. Without that the block will crack out were the bolt goes into the block.

I've had my harmonic balancer jump off in the pick n pull parking lot lol

helped me a lot with all the info, i bought one back in the summer and am trying to do research on what to look for as this is my first truck and its a diesel, previous owner said the engine blew but there are no signs of it being blown. this video has for sure helped me out, looking forward to watching more videos!!!

I like to unplug the FSO solenoid & crank. You can hear if the compression is even.

Very helpful info, when I could hear what he was saying. Speak up next time please. Once you started the engine and had to speak loud enough to hear over the engine noise, I could hear you very well. Should have done that for the entire video. Thanks for the info though as I'm looking at buying a truck with that engine in it.

Hey Bud Merry Christmas to you and your Family. I'm considering buying a 93 c3500 crewcab dually 6.5 for 4k..The smoke coming from the oil fill should go away after warm up? Send to be a good running truck but i don't know anything about diesels one bit. And being in California a presmog truck is a definite plus.

Hey there. Blow by isn’t a big deal. It’s just crank case pressure escaping and as it warms up there is normally a bit less.

Bad ass truck brotha. What have you done for it to get more hauling power ? I haul a bobcat and struggles to take off and get going. What turbo did you upgrade to?

This truck has a fass lift pump. Marine injectors from Leroy diesel. HX40 (Now an S300 borg Warner) fluid damper. KBDiesel upper intake. 4” turbo back exhaust. Quadstar tune and sending unit. 4” air intake and it’s been an outstanding farm truck/daily driver for almost a decade.

Got a question ginger. I bolted up heads a couple weeks ago with felpro gaskets(all I could get). I followed the torque sequence with 90* torque after the 50ftlb then I saw a video you did about going to 115 ftlb. It's sat two weeks with valve covers sealed on. Being that there felpros should I pull the covers back off and torque to 115 or should I leave it?

I would do a retorque. Felpro gaskets have thin fire rings and tend to pop. If you used ARP studs put them to 120lbs. If you have stock bolts take them to 115

i have a check engine light that comes on almost every time i hit 60 or am around 60 and it also comes on whenever im just on my throttle for a period of time, like going down the highway my check engine light will come on and all i have to do is just let off for a second and it goes away. even if i just take a little bit of pressure off my throttle for a fraction of a second and get back on it right away it goes away till im on my throttle for a period of time.

I have a 1994 6.5 Suburban. It is spotless. I will be using for my retirement hauler. I have about 160000 miles on it. I either want to put a new 6.5 in it and upgrade to make it tow better or put in a newer late model engine with more HP. What would you do? And with the upgrades you have talked about, do you think it would haul our 6500 - 7000 trailer better. It is a complete dog on the inclines. Slows down to about 45 MPH. Thank you for your time.

With a 94 you have the option for multi tunes from Quadstar. 6500-7000lbs isn’t bad to tow with one of these with the right upgrades. I would do a fluid damper, Fass lift pump and relay harness, Super54 turbo from Quadstar and upgraded upper intake plenum. Get a set of marine injectors. 4” turbo back exhaust and use it. The improved air flow and tuning will make it handle inclines without the massive decrease in speed. Do a 2000 water pump, 2000 fan clutch, 2001 duramax fan blade, Leroy diesel coolant bypass and a new GM thermostat and a set of Leroy diesel oil cooler lines as well. 160,000 miles is still young for that engine. So the upgrades and basic maintenance will keep it hauling for years to come.

Hey! Sweden here! Is assembling a 6.5 TD 1994 Got a problem with this! ?? So let me get this straight. Once the Timing Chain and gears are installed, the crank gear mark should be at 12 o'clock which will put the cam gear mark at 6 o'clock (pointing at each other). I got that. Now install the cam IP sprocket which will also point its mark to 6 o'clock (same as the cam timing gear). I then need to rotate the crank 180 degrees moving the cam IP sprocket mark to 12 o'clock. Now install the IP with the sprocket mark pointing to 6 o'clock (pointing at each other). The gear ratio between the crankshaft gear and the cam gear means that .... If I turn the crankshaft 180 °, the cam gear is only turned 90 ° !!!! 360 ° on the crank is 180 ° on the cam! Or am I completely confused here Then most of the instructions on how to mount the injection pump gear are not correct !! Pleas help me her!

It’s been a long time since I have done a full timing session. Cam and crank must be alighted 12 and 6. Then you rotate the engine CCW until the cam gear is at 12. Alight IP gear which will then face 6 to match the cam. That should be the correct sequence.

Hey GSC. Wondering if you can help a guy out. My truck wont start. 1998 GMC 2500 6.5 diesel. She cranks makes smoke but wont fire even with brake clean.(I don't like to use ether as it just sounds so nasty on a diesel) I just finished doing both heads, ip, injectors, main and rod bearings and the good ol' timing chain. Please keep me from bashing my head against the work bench in endless misery and frustration and solve my issue. lol. Thanks.

Sounds to me like the injection pump timing is off or you’ve got low lift pump pressure. You can also plug a PMD in directly to the injection pump to see if that helps.

What would you say is the average life expectancy for a 6.5? I’m planning on looking at one with 230,000 miles on it. Thanks!

Honestly I’ve had one with 455,000 miles that was all original and another with 395,000. It all boils down to maintaining them. 230,000 miles is still pretty low. I would do a harmonic balancer. Injectors. Lift pump and oil cooler lines when you get it home. Other than that it should last you a long while.

I have a 94 what is the coolant bypass hose under the thermostat called? I cannot find it on O'Reilly's website or AutoZone. Or perhaps more importantly what size of hose is it?

If my memory serves me right it’s a 5/8s hose or 3/4. I normally buy 12” of each to keep on the shelf since some use one size and some use the other.

Since Im not a skilled mechanic with years of experience especially with these engines are there specific things on my truck I should look out for? Here are some Data about the truck and what problems it has: - Its a 1994 GMC Sierra C2500 6.5 with 227.222 Miles on it - For 13250€ it was not cheap at least thats what I think - The engine has oil consumption and I assume its because of the cdr valve. Dont think consumption is gonna be completely gone after replacing the cdr valve but It might help a little. Consumption is 3/4 to 1 quarts on 300 to 400 Miles that I have driven since I own the truck Any advice that could save me money because of big problems that could be waiting to happen would be much appreciated. Greetings from Germany btw.

With oil consumption like that I would be concerned the oil cooler lines are leaking and the turbo drain. The CDR causes very minimal oil use. I would begin with checking for leaking lines before purchasing any components.

The guy with the shop owns an early Dodge RAM Cummins so I guess he knows a little about diesel engines. Im gonna inform him to check for oil leaks when taking a look under the truck

What are your thoughts on upgradeing to a durmax water pump and a 9 blade fan and clutch to keep it from getting hot when hauling

You can’t run a duramax water pump on a 6.5. But you can run the fan clutch and fan itself. I’ve tried both and I didn’t see enough difference from a 2000 6.5 clutch and fan to do the dmax components again.

There are no legit “upgrades” for injection pumps. DB2s once in a while you’ll find them turned up. But that’s it.

If frame and body are good, is buying a new engine worth putting in these trucks ?

A good fuel system and glow plugs is super important on these. Otherwise they will take forever to fire

That’s a tough question. I’ve had some with 400,000 that ran amazing and some that had 100,000 that blew up shortly after purchasing them. It all depends on prior maintenance history and if they’ve been taken care of.

Would it be worth replacing an engine on one that’s still in good condition?

Keep an eye on the number that is on the engine block. There are engine blocks from the later 6.5 with the number 506 on it I heard those blocks are terrbile qualitiy. I heard they often got cracks. Dont know if that is true though.

@@Jean_1999 all blocks are equally crappy. I’ve broken more 599/141/929 blocks than 506. Maintenance is what makes or breaks a 6.5.

Pump mounted driver. It’s the little black box that houses electronics to help signal the DS4 injection pump to fire. When they go through enough heat cycles the resistors can become damaged which cause the engine to stall or even run away.

@@erichanson5929 purchase a relocation kit an PMD from Leroy diesel. You’ll also want the lift pump relay harness as well. Takes care of most electrical upgrades that these trucks needs from day one.

@@erichanson5929 the main ones on a 94-2000 are a PMD kit. Lift pump relay harness. Replace the lift pump itself. Battery cable upgrade and also commonly seen is upgraded glow plugs and harness.

In 2023 BS if it's full of hay and it comes at a decent price hell yeah pick it up

If they were built right the first time nobody would have to do any of this stuff to em . They really are dangerous had my pump decide it wanted to go full throttle more than once on me while stuck in traffic cause its all electronic and not a manual throttle cable ! Chevy should have scrapped the upgrades and recalls to replace pumps and just given everybody a new duramax replacement ! I'm sitting on a 99 with 100k miles and it's had 13 injection pumps put in That's unacceptable ! Usually 1000 each time its replaced ! Not good at all ..

They really left a lot of shortfalls in them which is why most people bought 454s over the 6.5. Frankly I’m a big block fan. The 6.5s were a right place right time hobby that started over ten years ago. I still encounter some weird issues with these that make me wonder how GM got away with all of it.

Well I'm gonna fill you in on an interesting conversation I had today with a gm engineer and I still have to talk to customer service on Monday. July 2014 Chevrolet was ordered by the national health and transportation dept to recall a number of 6.5s . My truck is on the list ! They failed to send me this particular bulliten how convienent .. apparently they did it to a lot of people hoping they would just go away well I havnt ! He stated to me you can now go online and look at the gm recall bulletin it covers your truck for 120k miles or 11 years where I paid for my own pumps to be replaced since the 80k mile mark and I've put 13 in they shouldn't bitch if they have to properly fix mine or replace the Whole dammed truck ! Im about 50k into everything over time and thats no joke ..According to him trucks in the south are fine they dont go to a different formula diesel in winter if you go to the bulletin you can read some of what he told me anyways fuel manufacturers in an effort to clean up the environment have gone to an ultra low sulfur which is specially formulated for winter use in super cold climates ..So its not just plain ultra low sulfur it has additives. Now the additives they put in actually eat the seals right out of these within a few thousand miles or less in most cases ! Sounds familiar to me ! You have to build a pump for specific regions of the country instead of sending the special sealed pumps they keep sending a universal pump ! These pumps need special seals made from special materials the standard rebuild seals are no good ! So this is why so many ended up in the crapper ! I was inches from getting a cummings today before I talked to him ! Now ill see what customer service says ! My fam owns a chevy dealership and dodge dealership ive driven junk my whole life , I do have a few toys but they are kind of investment toys for later in life. I'm not giving up too easy now im understanding what they did .

I paid $1115 for mine, I didn't look at shit. 129,000 miles.

@@gingersnapcustomsFor the money I didn't need to look at much. It runs and drives, but was a work truck with a decent but not perfect body. Probably needs an optical sensor or an optic sensor bump or something simple but has already had PMD relocated, pull pump replaced and possibly bypassed from oil pressure switch, fuel sending unit done. Not saying it's amazing or anything but you'd have probably bought it too.
