HX35 TURBO UPGRADE - 6.5 Diesel

Been doing a lot of "spring" maintenance on my 1995 GMC SUBURBAN 6.5L Diesel Turbo. Hubs, rotors, calipers, brake pads etc.
Decided to do a TURBO upgrade with a HX35 HOLSET clone.

    I'm pretty new to the 6.5 so I definitely am enjoying your content and learning a lot. After taking it to the mechanic a couple of times and losing an arm and a leg in the process I'm looking at doing my own work, not just for the savings but for the peace of mind and the fun of doing it myself. Seeing there's a lot you can do to upgrade these and get rid of the engines weaknesses and wake the engine in the process is encouraging. Not that I'm trying to go fast, I'll take fuel savings, especially right now, xD

    Old school diesels are the way to go. I have a 95 2500 4x4 i picked up for $600 and was able to pick up a spare low mileage 6.5 from a local who was doing a cummins conversion for only $300. So its fun to have two of these motors and a spare turbo etc. You can keep the new insane DPF and urea secondary fuel diesels. Idi and even more so the mechanical fuel injected diesels are the pinnacle in my book. Reliability and simplicity is what I like. Lets buy a new $65,000 truck that costs as much as a house as a status symbol. Think I'll pass on that whole status thing

    Haven't owned a new vehicle since I bought an '82 S10. Sold it and bought a '74 blazer and drove it (still have it on the back 40), then bought a used '83 2500 suburban with 6.2L. I can usually by a decent beater truck for less than most people pay for one repair on a new vehicle. The money I've save in taxes, inspection fees, repairs (do all myself - haven't paid a mechanic a dime in over 30 years), I could probably by two new vehicles. Now I have two 92 Ford F350 duallies with 7.3L IDI's (one was free, and the other $1200, 6 years ago - and both run). What I really want is a '95 or older 3500 GM 4X4 dually and these videos will help me decide how to make a nice daily driver/farm truck. Do you, Yankee's Cabin and Coffee, have any info/opinions on transmissions for the 6.5L and bombproofing it? Thanks for the great info, as well as your other vid showing the 3 things to get rid of!

    Rattlerjake1 the auto transmissions are 4l80e’s and those are very reliable transmissions and are swapped into basically any gm hotrod, the only real way to bomb proof it is to do a complete rebuild with aftermarket clutches etc

    Great little vid. I also own a 6.5L and have used it in 2 vehicles over the past 20 years. First vehicle was all mechanical, second iteration is electronic with DS4 pump. I've done most of the recommended upgrades and many other mods to ensure that the engine continues to run well. It's a 95 Suburban and it has been everywhere with all my family loaded into it. My GM-4 is still spooling pretty happily but I am considering replacing it with something more efficient along with a power tune or two to improve power and mpg. So far, I have the ATT turbo and this Holset HX35 on the short list. Again, thanks for posting this.

Nice to learn about the GM 6.5 diesel, I know some about the Cummins in the Dodge and the Power Stroke, so it is good to know that the GM is also a reasonable option, because when I'm bargain hunting for a tow vehicle in the (possibly) near future, I never know what I might come across.

    Back in October on my way home from our local gay bookstore I looked down at my phone (it was hoco weekend, I had went hunting the morning after and was running on 1 hour of sleep, and also had a Bluetooth radio which auto answers calls and it scared me😂) anyways I looked to see who called me and didn't see the Pontiac stopped in front of me and wrecked my beloved 95...I've been in the process of rebuilding, just been waiting for some good weather. After finding your channel you've inspired me to fix my 6.5 the right way, not to cut corners and actually unlock what this truck is capable of😂it's currently 11:38 so I my have ran on here but thank you for actually opening my eyes to what my truck can do and how to go about making it better

    +Yankee Living (Combining DIY, Outdoor Adventure and Fine Coffee) I just built two chicken tractors with my son this week. Each one can hold 30 chickens and light enough to be moved by one person around on the pasture. We are going to try and raise enough chicken to eat after the venison runs out until deer season starts again in the fall. Didn't you raise turkeys a while back? How did that go?

  • @Yankeeprepper

    @Yankeeprepper

    +mauldindoc123 That is awesome, chicken tractor projects with the kid! Turkey's were fun and I learned a lot about them while raising them, it gave me a lot of knowledge I would not have otherwise in order to hunt them. HOWEVER...warning....Turkeys are smart....DOG level intelligence (not like chickens at all). And if I were to raise Turkeys again, I would build a pen and keep them in the back of the property. I let them roam around and they bonded to me.....they are very social. Followed me everywhere and even slept on the 2nd story roof top next to my bedroom (they figured out where we slept and even when and where we sat down for dinner) They started to fly next to my truck for short distances when leaving the house too. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do when it came to harvesting them. I began to enjoy them as a pet. It reminded me of how deep the "Fall" is, and that although God gave us the animals for food out of necessity........the original plan before SIN did not have death in it.

    Sir, when gear heads hear I drive a 6.5 Diesel I have to listen to a lengthy tirade as to what a POS it is compared to their 7.3 fix or repair daily. So far I have only 200K on mine and non of the issues that face the power stroke idiots. A seasoned diesel mechanic was not able to diagnose low pressure when the oil pressure safety value failed. Although, my POS 6.5 still ran for yrs without the lift pump running. Finally I figured it out and it has its zooom back. After viewing your youtube videos I think I might keep my 24 yr old 6.5 and incorporate your ideas... I saw some interesting items at leroy's site. My turbo does not whistle loud enough. Now that needs to be changed..! I also have the 5 spd in my Cheyenne and really enjoy my diesel... but need a louder whistle. Only mod is a straight pipe.

    Chinese lock washers, made from crude brittle pig iron. Good idea about using the wife's towel. its probably the cleanest in the house. I hope you were considerate, and put it back on her towel rack after you were finished catching the filings and wiping down the intake.
