I honestly love that the main romantic focus is a Asian Man Black Female couple because I feel like that pairing is NEVER seen in mainstream media. Plus, I think the natural on screen chemistry between Phil's character and Janine's character is fun to watch. Can't wait for season 2! :D

Seriously, I remember being so mad about the ending to Romeo Must Die because Jet Li and Aaliyah didn’t kiss at the end! They had such good chemistry, the whole plot was setting it up, and then it just doesn’t happen. It’s so frustrating and unsatisfying.

Ok, who would not like Janine? She's gorgeous, cute, and so likeable. And I also thought Chris did have, at least, a teensy bit of Latino in him. That could open up a new topic of how much in common ( or how different) the Latin and Asian community are. ( No joke, we are almost invisible in entertainment except or trashy pons or being a raging sexual stereotype) I know in high school, being from a very diverse area, many Latin and Asian students would get confused for each other's ethnicities. I wonder if this was only in my area though...

ohdaUtube yep! Latin people are actually Native Americans (but to the South and central parts of America). Most are the native part + the colonizers (mostly Spanish), black, and Asian. There was actually a Japanese migration to Mexico from the mid-16th century that last until the 20th century too! To plainly put in, Latin people are super mixed natives

I resonate so hard with Janine! I'm Japanese, Native American and Mexican. I grew up in Japan but I didn't find a community when I moved back to America, which caused me to lose touch of my culture. I didn't speak Spanish and my family was 4th generation Mexican-emphasis-on-American, so I didn't fit in with the Mexicans. And I'm not federally enrolled so the Natives don't take me seriously. Though I can feel the rejection that stems from my cultural schizophrenia, I also feel empowered by my diversity, my ability to chameleon through different social circles 💪 I am proud of my circumstances and, ultimately, I know people can make their own judgements/conclusions. Those who embrace me are the ones who truly deserve me 😌 I shouldn't have to prove myself to anyone!

I really like this episode!! I'm half caucasian, and half native american. I have squinty eyes and a round face so people think I'm mixed asian. Grew up with a lot of black friends and my mom gave me the name Tanisha so I have a "black name" and then I moved to wear all my friends were asian. Honestly the identity problem with being a "mixed" kid is super real. I'm not "native" enough and I'm not "white" enough so I'm just glad that more people like us mixed folk are talking about the struggles so we don't feel so alone in it!

Honestly I really want them to discuss anti-blackness in the Asian community in the next season. Growing up in Vegas and going to a magnet school there was a large Asian and white population while only 6% of the school was black, so I didn’t have many black friends as a teenager. With the majority of my friends being Asian meeting their parents or family was a little awkward until they got to know me and then it gets even slightly weirder because I here how “I’m different” or how my friends aren’t allowed to date black guys but they’re okay with them being friends with me. It came from white and Latino friends too but with the white friends it wasn’t as blatant and with the Latino friends it was more joking. And then dating as a dark skinned black woman UGGHHHHHHH. The black dudes at my school didn’t want black girls, the black dudes in my neighborhood thought I was too “white”, Asian guys seemed to just flat out never even think about it, white guys seemed fair unless you discover that either them or their friends thought they had “jungle fever”, and my first boyfriend was Latino but his dad hated me for the first year because I was black even though I was a “nice girl”. And I know I’m not the only one who’ve experienced it because my black female friends with similar backgrounds have went through the same thing. I feel weird when my best friends Filipino mom jokes about “chocolate guys” even though I know she doesn’t mean anything by it. I feel weird hearing my Korean guy friend laugh at the thought of him ever bringing a black girl home. It’s just all super uncomfortable and you don’t want to be like “Yo bro that’s kind of racist” but it still just feels wrong and you know a bunch of people share that sentiment. My stepmom is from Bangladesh and most of her family doesn’t know me and my dad exist and it’s frustrating. Idk I’m rambling, great show guys! Can’t wait for the second season

awesomeallyse My coworker has 3 very beautiful half black, half Japanese daughters. Hearing your experience growing up makes me wonder if they go through similar hardships. Thank you for sharing your story. Being Vietnamese, I am aware of many Asian preferences for nice skin and slim figure. Nice skin is often associated with it being less exposed to the sun and being clear. So Vietnamese girls who are more tanned are perceived not as attractive. When conforming to traditions and/or societal norms, a person may be faced with a lot of criticisms from their families, superiors and social circles so choosing a mate who is more well perceived is less likely to negatively impact one’s standing. So even if a person likes another who is not commonly accepted within their circle, it is difficult to stand firm because it is a constant uphill battle. It is much easier for someone to chose to live for themselves in the US because individualism is accepted here. It is not in Asia or within families that hold traditional values. Even Asians clash amongst each other because of the lack of family acceptance. So for non-Asians, it is even more concerning for the parents because they fear that their family dynamic will be changed. When I married my husband, who is Vietnamese, I didn’t marry just him-our families married. His mother became my mom. His dad became my dad. We had to find a common ground. Because I was raised in the US, it took enormous effort from everyone to accept each other’s deficiencies. If I wasn’t Vietnamese, then I would bypass all of that struggle, because his parents wouldn’t even know how to try. And that’s why it is very scary for them. Not being understood.

Dude, I totally feel for you! I go to a predominantly Asian school and have been told to my face that “I don’t date black girls” from an Asian guy and told that “my parents will be scared of you”. It’s infuriating for sure. But, why care about the people who will discriminate? They will always miss out.

awesomeallyse Start speaking up on EVERYTHING. Too many of us will endure these things out of fear of being accused of "pulling the race card", being the "angry, militant black person" or simply the bad guy. Anytime you hear something wrong do not be afraid to say dude that kind a racist. And brace yourself, they will guilt you into saying nevermind and not wanting to talk about it. But please! Call that ish out. You have to! No matter who dislikes it. It feels wrong because it is wrong and you know it. Speak up, sis! No more fear. We've endured enough of this nonsense! Keep your dignity! You should listen to this radio podcast called The COWS (the context of white supremacy) it'll break down and help you understand why these things happen and how to deal with them. As far as dark skin black female issues, check out "Chrissie" on KZread. You'll see a silhouette of a black chick with an afro with a red background. Lots of support, understanding, and info on the whole dark skin female thing. It's a major issue. Good luck to you. And try going after black nerds or black guys with your same interests. There are plenty of black guys who are your equivalent. Trust me!

KodixBerri : Asian guy here! For a lot of Asians, parents are a big issue. Going against parents is a big no-no as it’s deemed a betrayal of your family’s values and rules. You hear lots of things from parents and peers alike. “Don’t marry Black. I don’t want my grandchildren to be ugly” is one example I have heard from my peers and peers’ parents. Not just towards blacks but every ethnicity even other Asians. But know there are Asian men who love black women. Dime a dozen but they exist

I’ve also been wanting to create content about anti-blackness in the Asian community. It’s in every Asian community. But I just don’t know how Togo about it. I’ll probably do some research and ask for some opinions. I don’t want to make it sound like I’m speaking for black people (saving black people) because they are able to speak for themselves. But I do want to have a real talk with Asian Americans and address this issue. There’s a fine line between using your privilege for good and trying to look like a savior.

What's really frustrating for us mixed kids is no one listens. It really sucks we're not Asian, or Black, or White. Each race tries to deny who we are.....then gets mad if we spend time with one group vs. another.

Yaasss, I'm so glad you had Janine on to talk about being mixed race! One of my first thoughts when Kaleena's character was introduced was that I want to hear more of her story and perspective. Being mixed race is such an inherently complex identity, and of course it also varies a lot depending on what your mix is and your physical attributes. I'm half Japanese and half white, but I appear pretty white to people who don't know me; my experience being mixed race is very different from even my own siblings, who both look "more Asian" at first sight. Either way, I think we all experience exclusion and misunderstanding in some form or another. Anyway, all that to say that I'm always happy to see mixed-race perspectives featured and very interested to hear others' experiences. Hoping to see more of Janine and Kaleena in a Season 2! 😀

As a half-Japanese and half-Caucasian, I can totally relate to Janine and her hapa struggles. I never looked like either half, and I was always burnt from playing in the sun so much that I had a lot of people confuse me for Latina (which I didn't mind at all), so I hung out with the Latina crowd growing up, but obviously I was different. Thinking back about it, I've been confronted by mixed race being a "problem" quite a bit with kids at Japanese school and even my grandparents calling me foreigner, and being outcasted from different ethnic groups even in college. I went through a long phase of ignoring my white side because there was so much negative connotation associated with it. Anyways, not sure I fit into any set group, but that's the thing with hapa's and I'm okay with that. I’m in the process of accepting my difference and I’m extremely lucky to have 2 really great and inclusive best friends who are Mexican and Ethiopian, who share their culture with me as I share mine. Thank you guys for bringing up this topic!

My mom is a Russian immigrant to the US, and my dad is a Korean immigrant, and I definitely related strongly to what Janine was saying about not being accepted by either groups. I think the short "In Between" with Mike Bow got kinda close to this feeling, but it'd be really cool to see WFP's take on the societal, racial, cultural struggles that mixed peeps specifically have to deal with! Loved Yappie BTW :-)

Yes, great topics. Two things I would love to see more of in season two, 1. The deepening of the relationship between Andrew and Kalene. 2. The reaction of Andrews parents when they finds out. I just watched another Asian series where the mother didn't approve of an Asian guy her daughter was dating. I assume he wasnt yappie enough, and the mother made them stop dating although they were deeply in love. I was so hurt for them and couldn't stop crying.

i loved yappie! i think it took me a while to actually get comfortable with the characters openly talking about several controversies and political topics, but by episode 5 i really grew to enjoy the series and appreciated how important it is to have those topics brought to light in the media. for season two i'd love to see more of kahlena's background and more information about the injustices of her parents coming together and what they faced and how it's reflective of Andrew and Kahlena's relationship. Look forward to season two guys!! fingers crossed! #wongfuforlife

Best Lunch Break ever. I especially liked Phil talking about writing episode 5 and getting input from Michael Egemba, the actor who played Russ. That scene was so real. It made a big impact on the gravity of the whole series.

I think the topic of mixed race is so fascinating!! Especially since I'm from Brazil, a very racially mixed nation, because I think to most Brazilians is so hard trying to get to know ourselves in that matter (as in "who" or "what" are we...) Loved the video and love Wong Fu team!!
