Growing dahlias month by month episode 11: early August

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A month by month guide to growing dahlias. In this episode Geoff talks about the criteria he uses to decide on which varieties to grow the following year.
Dahlias
Dahlias start flowering in July and will continue to flower until the first frost, so they have a very long flowering season.
Their flowers come in many sizes from the tiniest pompons to the giant dinner-plate varieties, there are several shapes, including the round ball shaped decorative varieties, the spiky cactus types, the delicately pretty waterlilies and the pin-cushion shaped anemones.
They come in every colour apart from blue, and there are dahlias that reach 9 feet / 3 metres tall, whilst others only reach 18 inches / 40 centimetres.
So there is a dahlia suitable for every garden, and they can even be grown in pots.
Geoff and Heather have been growing dahlias for many years and use the different shapes and sizes to help create a tiered effect in their garden in Cheshire. Together with salvias, fuchsias, and bedding plants they have managed to create a riot of summer colour.
Each September they open their garden to the public as part of the U.K. National Garden Scheme.
In this video, and the other videos in the series, they show you how they manage to do this, providing guidance on how to grow perfect dahlias.

I just want to say how inspiring it is to watch your insightful episodes about the magical World of Dahlia! I learn so much each time. And your twinkle in the eye approach makes me smile. I am myself a starter in growing Dahlia. Right now 20 plants in my garden. Best wishes from Henrik in Copenhagen.

Greetings from Australia, what a superb display you have created for us this year. Congratulations to you both. Still digging mine up to divide. We do not get a really cold winter where we are...SWVictoria. Well, no snow, some hail and cold winds. Hope the weather holds for your open days.

Wow you have some beauties. With this being the first time Iv grown Dahlias Iv made a few mistakes. Not left enough room to squeeze in to tie up plus I didn’t steal one and it fell and snapped in that bit of a windy night last week. So looking forward to meeting you both in September. Thanks for the video. Keep them coming 🙂

Hi Gina. I can’t say for sure. A couple of thoughts….. did you start them off early enough? Getting them growing in pots before you plant out might help. Also, some varieties always flower late, particularly those with large flowers. It might be worth trying some new varieties, esp some with smaller flowers. Finally, did you feed them? If you don’t give each plant lots of compost like I do, they need feeding. See the American Dahlia Soc or the UK NDS website for advice on which types of fertiliser to use when.

Great job guyz. As usual beautiful garden. How often do you water your dahlias in june july and August?

  • @Dahliaholic

    @Dahliaholic

I only water when it’s very dry. The aim is to make the plants send their roots downwards. If you water too often they stay shallow rooted.

Need your advice please. Only a few of my plants bloomed this year. I bought two that haven't rebloomed and it hasn't grown since I about them. They are planted in an area with 6-8 hrs of light no shade, watered when the soil is dry about 2" down. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Paul. I don’t know about varieties that skip years, but some do better in dry and hot years while others prefer cool and wet!

It’s best to buy from a proper dahlia nursery. In the U.K. try Halls of Heddon. In USA try Swan Island or Cowlitz River. It’s too late for 2023 though….
